SCOUTING REPORT
|
Zunino is the top ranked catcher in the 2012 draft class. He’s a strong two-way catcher, with good defense and the potential to be a middle of the order hitter.
On defense, Zunino can handle a pitching staff, and is a good leader. He has a strong and accurate arm, good hands, and good agility, which provides him with good blocking skills. Offensively he made some strides his sophomore year, increasing his walk rate and hitting for a lot of power. A lot of that has to do with his approach to off-speed pitches. He did a better job in 2010 of waiting on the breaking ball, rather than chasing the pitch. He also has quick bat speed, which will allow him to hit for future power. Because of his two way ability, and a strong 2012 season, Zunino projects to be a top five pick, with the chance of going first overall. That means there’s no chance he falls to the Pirates. |
