Toledo Mud Hens� 8,� Indianapolis Indians� 2 ..����� (box)

Five runs in the 1st inning gave the Toledo Mud Hens a lead they would not give up, as they defeated the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field tonight.

Joe Martinez (photo) had to work through a tough 1st inning on this start.� The first batter of the game, 2B Justin Henry, fouled off the first two pitches for an 0-2 count, then took 4 straight balls, for a walk.� SS Cale Iorg grounded to third, forcing Henry out at second, but Iorg was safe at first.� 1B Max Leon dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Iorg to second base.� Then, with two outs, LF Jeff Frazier smacked a 2-run homer over the left field wall.� CF Ben Guez followed the homer with a single, and former Indy Indian C Robinzon Diaz reached on an error when Martinez could not handle the tapper back to the mound.� DH Michael Bertram belted a 3-run homer over the right-center field wall, and the Mud Hens had a 5-0 lead.

The Indians got one run back in the bottom of the 2nd when four consecutive batters reached base. With one out, LF Mitch Jones lined a single into left field, then advanced to second base when Robinzon Diaz let a pitch get past him.� C Erik Kratz and DH Brian Myrow both ran the count full then took a walk, loading the bases.� SS Pedro Ciriaco lined another single into left field, scoring Jones from third base.� A foul pop and a grounder back to the mound ended the inning with three base runners still on.

Martinez got through the 2nd and 3rd innings without allowing a run to score, though he gave up back-to-back singles (Henry and Iorg) in the 2nd, and a walk to Bertram in the 3rd.� The Mud Hens picked up another run in the top of the 4th, when RF Christopher White led off with a solo home run.� Henry and Iorg singled again after the home run, but a double play and a ground out got Martinez out of that jam.

The Mud Hens went down in order for Martinez in the 5th, but came right back at him in the 6th.� RF Shawn Roof and Christopher White led off with back-to-back singles.� A ground out to first moved both runners into scoring position, and Cale Iorg's line drive double into left field brought both Roof and White in to score, giving the Mud Hens an 8-1 lead.� That was the end of Martinez's night.� He had allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits and 2 walks, with 3 strikeouts.� He threw 93 pitches, 58 for strikes.

Richmond Flying Squirrels� 9,� Altoona Curve� 6�� (Game 1)..� (box)

This was the wrap-up of a suspended game from... awhile back.� 2B Jordy Mercer had 3 hits in the game with an RBI, and LF Jim Negrych had a single, a double, and an RBI for the Curve.� The Curve scored first, with 3 runs in the bottom of hte 1st, on a double by 3B Shelby Ford, an RBI single by Mercer, walks to both C Kris Watts and LF Brandon Jones (back when he was still on the team), and a 2-RBI single by RF Miles Durham.

Richmond came back to tie the score with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, on four singles and a throwing error by 1B Matt Hague. Then they took the lead with another 3 runs in the top of the 3rd, on a walk and three doubles.� Starter Tim Alderson was responsible for 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and a walk over 3 innings.� Dustin Molleken took over for Alderson, and retired the side in the top of the 4th inning.� The Curve began the bottom of the inning with a walk to Durham, a single by CF Anthony Norman, and a sacrifice bunt by Molleken, to put both runners into scoring position.� That was when play was halted.� When the game resumed, SS Chase d'Arnaud singled, scoring Durham.� PH/3B Josh Harrison grounded to short, which let Norman score also.� Mercer singled again, but was left on base.� The Curve had closed the gap, 6-5

Derek Hankins took over for Molleken after the restart.� He pitched 5 innings, scattering two hits and a walk over the first four of those innings.� The Curve also put runners on base in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but did not score.

In the top of the 9th, Hankins gave up a single and an RBI double, then three more singles, increasing Richmond's lead to 9-5.� The Curve got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 9th, when Hague walked, and moved to third on a fielding error that also put Watts on base.� Jim Negrych singled into left field, bringing in Hague from third.� Watts also tried to score, coming from second base, but he was out at the plate on the throw in from left field, ending the game.

Curve� 5,� Flying Squirrels� 1�� (Game 2)..� (box)

The Curve turned the tables in the second game, which was scheduled for only 7 innings.� Rudy Owens buzzed through 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits and one walk, while striking out 5 batters.� He surrendered a single in the 2nd and a double in the 4th, then a walk in the 6th.� It was Owens' 11th win of the season.� Daniel Moskos wrapped things up in the 7th inning.� He loaded the bases with two walks and a single.� A grounder force out brought in Richmond's only run, but then Moskos ended the game with a strikeout.

2B Jordy Mercer's bat was still hot, as he collected another 2 hits.� He and LF Jim Negrych both singled in the 4th, then C Hector Gimenez reached on a throwing error, which brought in Negrych with the first run of the game.� A walk to 3B Josh Harrison and singles by 1B Matt Hague and Mercer scored Harrison with another run in the 5th.� SS Chase d'Arnaud added three more runs with a 3-run homer in the 6th, also plating CF Anthony Norman, who had walked, and pinch-hitter Andrew Lambo, who had singled.

Indianapolis Indians� 2,� Toledo Mud Hens� 1 ..���� (box)

A pitching duel erupted at Victory Field tonight, and it ended with the Indians and starter Chris Jakubauskas (photo above) on top.� The win gives the Indians an 11 - 9 game lead of the season series.

Chris Jakubauskas (photo) made his first start as an Indian since early April.� He was told in advance that he'd be limited to about 60 pitches.� It turned out that he threw 61, 41 of which were strikes.� He was clearly sailing, with his curve ball working well.� Jakubauskas said after the game that his sinker was also working well for him, and that was a bit unusual. He allowed only 3 hits and one walk, and struck out 5 batters.

Jakubauskas gave up a single to Mud Hens' 2B Scott Sizemore with two outs in the 1st inning, but ended the inning with a grounder force out.� He worked around a walk to 1B Michael Bertram in the 2nd inning, finishing that inning with a strikeout.

The only inning in which Jakubauskas had any trouble was the 3rd.� Mud Hens' 3B Shawn Roof led off the inning with a triple into right-center field.� RF John Bowker went way to his right to try to catch up to the line drive, but it got just past him and rolled all the way to the wall, as Roof cruised into third base.� Toledo RF Justin Henry follwed with a twisting single into left field, bringing in Roof, to give Toledo a 1-0 lead.�

But that was all the scoring the Mud Hens would do.� In fact, it was all the anything they would do until the 9th inning.� After Henry's single, Jakubauskas retired the next three batters, finishing the 3rd inning with two strikeouts.� Then he retired the next six batters he faced, including a strikeout in each of the 4th and 5th innings.� With the pitch limit imposed on him, he knew that would be all, but he looked as if he could have gone at least another inning if needed.

John Russell has taken his fair share of criticism during his time as the Pirates' manager, some of which has been justified. Despite the historic losing and the anger heaped down from the fanbase, he is still standing unfazed in the Bucs' dugout. That, in itself, is a testament to why Neal Huntington chose him to lead this team.
