WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Valdes spent most of his time as a reliever in 2017 for USF, pitching as a fifth year senior.  He had a 4.37 ERA in 59.2 innings, with a 56:28 K/BB ratio.  Prior to attending USF, he went to the State College of Florida for a year, and played a year with Florida State as a freshman.  Valdes sits at 91-93 with his fastball, and also throws a palm ball and a curve.  He was a two-way player in the past, but received very little time at the plate in his last two years.  Baseball America rated Valdes the 145th best prospect out of Florida in 2017.

2017
R:  1-0-1, 0.00 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 7.1 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 13.5 K/9
R+:  0-2-0, 5.19 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 17.1 IP, 6.2 BB/9, 11.4 K/9

The Pirates initially sent Valdes to the GCL, then moved him up to Bristol.  He pitched strictly in relief at both stops.  He had high K rates, but had control problems at Bristol.  Much of that occurred in his last two outings, when he allowed five walks and seven earned runs in two and a third innings.  In his other eight games at Bristol, he allowed seven walks and three earned runs in 15 innings.  He had problems with gopher balls, allowing five, or one every three and a half innings, at Bristol.

2018
A-:  1-1-1, 4.75 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 30.1 IP, 5.3 BB/9, 8.6 K/9
A:  0-0-0, 0.87 ERA, 0.58 WHIP, 10.1 IP, 1.7 BB/9, 8.7 K/9

Valdes spent most of the season in the Morgantown bullpen, where he wasn’t especially effective.  At the end of the season, though, he moved up to West Virginia and pitched dramatically better in three long relief appearances.

2019
A+:  2-2-2, 6.83 ERA, 1.84 WHIP, 27.2 IP, 6.5 BB/9, 7.8 K/9
AA:  0-0-0, 9.00 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 2.0 IP, 9.0 BB/9, 9.0 K/9

Valdes spent the season pitching in relief for Bradenton, except for one game filling in for Altoona in May.  He pitched only a little, just five games, in July and August.  He pitched scoreless ball in his first eight outings, but had an ERA of 10.90 after that, partly due to control problems.

Valdes will fill in somewhere if he’s back in 2020.
