SCOUTING REPORT
The Pirates added Crosby in the 2009-2010 off-season to push Ronny Cedeno defensively at shortstop, and to provide some competition at the position for the 2010 season.  Crosby was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2004, but has failed to reach that level of performance since the 2005 season.  His on-base percentage has been below .300 every year since 2005, and his slugging percentage has been below .360 every year in that time frame.

Crosby’s biggest asset is his defense.  Crosby has a career 4.1 UZR/150 at the shortstop position.  He also has a career .270/.339/.423 line in 355 at-bats against National League teams.  At the least, Crosby will provide the Pirates with strong defense up the middle off of the bench.  Crosby could also carry his weight in a starting role as a defense-only shortstop.  An optimistic view has Crosby maintaining his numbers against NL teams, which combined with his defense would make him an upgrade over previous Pirates shortstop, Jack Wilson.  The major downside for Crosby has been his injury history, which could prevent him from being a full time shortstop in 2010.
