WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Judging by the numbers, Boggs is remarkably similar to Pirate minor leaguer Evan Chambers.  He draws large numbers of walks, fans a lot, hits for low averages, and has modest power.  He played mainly center through 2007, then moved primarily to the corners.  He seems to have missed a fair amount of time due to injuries, especially in 2005-06.

2004
A-:  235/373/369, 149 AB, 11 2B, 3 HR, 29 BB, 43 K, 6-8 SB

In his debut in short season ball, Boggs drew a large number of walks but also fanned a lot.

2005
A:  246/353/437, 309 AB, 16 2B, 2 3B, 13 HR, 50 BB, 69 K, 14-20 SB

Boggs cut down a little on his strikeouts in low A, while hitting for moderate power and continuing to draw large numbers of walks.

2006
A+:  261/352/444, 284 AB, 20 2B, 4 3B, 8 HR, 40 BB, 63 K, 13-17 SB

Boggs put up very similar numbers in high A, but for a 23-year-old playing in the California League they weren’t impressive.

2007
A+:  250/361/500, 92 AB, 9 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 14 BB, 28 K, 5-6 SB
AA:  266/385/508, 354 AB, 21 2B, 4 3B, 19 HR, 70 BB, 103 K, 10-14 SB

The Rangers sent Boggs back to high A, but promoted him early in the season.  He had his best season, with 23 HR overall and a very high walk rate.

2008
AAA:  309/368/456, 68 AB, 4 2B, 3 3B, 7 BB, 20 K, 1-2 SB
MLB:  226/333/399, 283 AB, 17 2B, 4 3B, 8 HR, 44 BB, 93 K, 3-5 SB

Boggs started the season in AAA, but Texas brought him up in late April, due to a combination of injuries and players struggling.  He stayed there the rest of the season, playing semi-regularly in left.  He didn’t hit for average and he fanned in a third of his at-bats, but he drew a lot of walks and hit for modest power.

2009
AAA:  268/380/398, 332 AB, 15 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 59 BB, 98 K, 9-11 SB
MLB:  059/111/118, 17 AB, 1 2B, 1 BB, 8 K

Boggs spent most of the season in AAA, with only a brief major league callup.  He continued to get on base at a good rate, but didn’t hit for much power.

2010
AAA:  290/406/470, 362 AB, 25 2B, 5 3B, 10 HR, 72 BB, 93 K, 3-9 SB
MLB:  000/125/000, 7 AB, 1 BB, 4 K

The Rangers again sent Boggs to AAA with just a brief callup.  He had a much better season, even hitting for average.  Texas removed him from the 40-man roster at the beginning of September and he signed with Milwaukee in the fall.

2011
AAA:  241/381/419, 270 AB, 19 2B, 1 3B, 9 HR, 53 BB, 82 K, 3-8 SB
MLB:  158/273/474, 19 AB, 2 HR, 3 BB, 8 K, 1-1 SB

In AAA, Boggs went back to his normal pattern of low average, lots of walks and modest power.  The Brewers called him up for about a month in late April when Nyjer Morgan went out with an injury.  He contributed two HRs, one of them naturally against the Pirates.  Milwaukee outrighted him back to AAA in late May and he became a free agent after the season.

2012
AAA:  259/359/408, 409 AB, 24 2B, 5 3B, 9 HR, 62 BB, 120 K, 6-14 SB

Boggs played regularly for Indianapolis all year, mostly in right.  He hit about like he had in the past, with a lot of walks and strikeouts, but less power than usual.  He had two big months, April (.872 OPS) and June (1.034), and one awful one, May (.482).  He hammered LHPs (.945) and struggled against RHPs (.690).

Boggs will be a free agent in the off-season and will probably move on.
