Bass Has A Good Start for Aragua

Cheering for Pirates' players and friends in Sunday's winter league games...

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Leones del Caracas 9, Bravos de Margarita 2 -- Caracas began the game with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st, and kept right on rolling, with a run in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th , and 4 in the 5th. In the 5th, Margarita reliever Jhonathan Ramos enterd the game with one run already scored, a runner on second base, and no outs. He made a missed catch error while covering first base for the first batter he faced, which allowed the base runner to score. Then Ramos gave up a double and a single, and two more runs came in. A double play and a tapper back to the mound ended the inning. Margarita's first run came in the 4th inning, when LF Frank Diaz tripled, and 3B Andy LaRoche brought him in with a sacrifice fly. Los Bravos scored again in the 5th inning on a pair of doubles. LaRoche also walked in the 6th inning, but was earased in a double play.

Navegantes del Magallanes 5, Tigres de Aragua 4 -- Aragua jumped out to a 3-0 start in the top of the 1st. A lead-off double was followed by a sacrifice bunt by SS Ronny Cedeno, and an RBI single by LF Lastings Milledge. DH Hector Gimenez brought in Milledge with a 2-run homer. Magallanes brought Corey Hamman on in relief to begin the 3rd inning, and Hamman allowed Aragua only one hit over the next three innings. He then began the top of the 6th by giving up a double, then a sacrifice bunt by Gimenez. Hamman was relieved, and one more run scored on a walk and a sacrifice fly. Then in the bottom of the inning, Magallanes started their come-back. Brian Bass had pitched 5 scoreless innings for Los Tigres (allowing just 2 hits and 4 walks), and Los Navegantes had to wait until Bass was relieved to start their rallies. A single, a walk to DH Mike Ryan, then three more walks forced in two runs in the 6th. A hit batter, another walk to Ryan, a wild pitch, and an RBI ground out got Los Navegantes within one run of Los Tigres. In the bottom of the 8th, two lead-off singles and a sacrifice bunt put two Navegantes' runners into scoring position. The next batter dropped another sacrifice bunt, which Aragua reliever Rich Rundles picked up and threw away, allowing two runs to score, to give Magallanes the win. Aragua CF Jorge Cortes also singled and doubled in the game but didn't score.

Roster Moves and Winter Leagues: Rough Night For Morton And Hamman

A few roster moves by the Pirates today:

Several players have been removed from the 40-man roster and outrighted to AAA Indianapolis: LHP Justin Thomas, RHP Sean Gallagher, RHP Steven Jackson, 1B Jeff Clement, and OF Brandon Moss.

Of these, Thomas, Jackson, and Moss are now all free to declare themselves minor league free agents. Clement does not have enough service time to get to be a free agent, so he's "stuck" on the Indianapolis roster. He's had knee surgery, and hopes to be ready by spring training. Gallagher does have the service time, but the Pirates are probably negotiating with him to try to keep him.

LHP Wil Ledezma has signed a one-year contract with the Pirates for 2011.

RHP Jose Ascanio and 1B Steve Pearce (who has also had knee issues) are officially off the DL and back on the 40-man roster. RHP Ross Ohlendorf also falls into this category.

On to Wednesday's winter league action, with Pirates' players and friends:

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Senadores de San Juan 4, Gigantes de Carolina 3 -- San Juan rallied from a 3-1 deficit to score one run in the 5th and 2 runs in the 6th for the win. Los Gigantes scored one run in the 4th on a double and a single. They added 2 runs in the 5th, on two singles, an error, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. Benji Gonzalez made a pinch-hitting appearance for Los Gigantes in the 8th inning, but flied out. He remained in the game at third base for the final inning.

Criollos de Caguas 4, Indios de Mayaguez 0 -- 3B Ramon Vazquez and SS Luis Figueroa each had one hit for Los Criollos in their win. Vazquez's single in the 5th drove in one of Los Criollos' runs. They also scored 2 runs in the 4th on two singles and two errors, and another run in the 6th on two singles and a sacrifice fly.

Noris Homers, MIlledge Hitting Well

Saturday's winter league action for the Pirates' players and friends. The Puerto Rican League had their Ponce/Caguas game postponed.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Bravos de Margarita 11, Cardenales de Lara 1 -- Despite 10 hits, Los Cardenales were able to score just one run, which came in the 3rd inning. Los Bravos piled up 12 hits and 11 runs, with two big innings. Margarita began with one run in the 1st, then added another in the 2nd. With all of the hits Lara was collecting, the Margarita starter, Will Savage, was relieved in the 5th inning, with one on and one out. Jhonathan Ramos came in for Savage, and ended the inning by getting a double play. He only pitched to one batter, but with the Bravos' rally in the bottom of the inning, Ramos was awarded his second win of the season. Margarita scored 4 runs in the 5th. 3B Andy LaRoche singled and stole second base in the inning, then scored on a later RBI single. LaRoche also walked in the 7th, and scored on another RBI single, for the first run of what would be a 5-run inning.

Navegantes del Magallanes 6, Tigres de Aragua 3 -- LF Lastings Milledge singled twice and walked once for Aragua, but it wasn't enough for a win. Milledge led off the bottom of the 4th with a single, and a fielding error, a single, and a grounder force out gave Aragua 2 runs, for a 3-1 lead. Milledge also singled to lead off the 6th and stole second base, but was left on base when Corey Hamman came on in relief for Magallanes and struck out the only batter he faced. Another pitcher relieved Hamman and ended the inning with Milledge still on third base. Milledge also reached third base in the 8th, when he walked, and advanced to third on a single. Magallanes scored 3 runs in the 6th inning, then two more in the 7th, to take the lead and the win. Jean Machi earned his 2nd win for Magallanes when he struck out the side (all swinging) in the 9th inning. LF Mike Ryan went 0-for-4 for Magallanes. C Hector Gimenez went 0-for-4 for Aragua.

VENZUELAN LEAGUE

Bravos de Margarita 6, Leones del Caracas 4 -- Margarita starter Justin Thomas gave up 2 runs in the 2nd inning on a walk and a home run. He zipped through the 3rd inning, then allowed a single and a walk in the 4th before being relieved, though both of those runners were left stranded. Caracas scored 2 more runs in the 5th on three walks, a single, and an error. Los Bravos had been scoreless for the first 4 innings, then exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th. 3B Andy LaRoche followed a lead-off single with an RBI double. Three consecutive walks by a new Caracas pitcher forced in LaRoche with the second run of the inning, leaving the bases loaded. Another new Caracas pitcher was greeted by LF Frank Diaz's grand slam, to give Margarita a 6-4 lead. Former Pirate farmhand Ronald Belisario pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th to earn the save.

Navegantes del Magallanes 2, Cardinales de Lara 1 -- Los Cardenales were held to just 4 hits in this game, while Los Navegantes posted 11 hits. Magallanes scored their first run in the 3rd inning, on an RBI single by 1B Mark Trumbo (Angels). Their starter Anthony Lerew (Royals) pitched 6 innings and allowed the 4 hits, one of which was a solo home run in the 6th inning, to tie the score and make Lerew ineligible for the win. Corey Hamman came on in relief, and pitched a perfect 7th inning. Jean Machi followed with a perfect 8th, and Yoel Hernandez retired the side in order in the 9th. In the top of the 8th, DH Mike Ryan broke the tie with a solo home run, which became the game-winner. That gave Hamman the win and Hernandez his 2nd save. Ryan went 3-for-4 in the game, raising his batting average to .389. SS Argenis Diaz went 1-for-4 for Magallanes.

Caribes de Anzoategui 3, Tigres de Aragua 2 -- Brian Bass gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in his start for Los Tigres, and he was lucky that it wasn't more runs, because he walked 5 batters. He gave a free pass to 2 batters in each of the 1st and 2nd innings, and both times left them on base. In the 3rd, he gave up a 2-out walk, and the next batter smacked a 2-run homer. He gave up a single in the 5th, and was relieved after getting a ground out. Aragua tied the game in the 5th inning when former Indy Indian LF Jorge Cortes walked, then a hit batter and a ground out pushed Cortes to third. he scored on an RBI single. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when Los Caribes got a lead-off single. Adenson Chourio came in as a pinch-runner, and he stole second base. A walk-off double plated Chourio with the winning run. 1B Hector Gimenez singled and walked twice for Los Tigres, and C Raul Chavez singled and walked, but neither scored.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Criollos de Caguas 2, Senadores de San Juan 1 -- San Juan scored one run in the top of the 1st on a walk, a stolen base, an error, and an RBI ground out. Then they had only 4 hits for the rest of the game. Caguas tied the score in the 5th inning on a walk, a single, and an RBI single by former Indy Indian SS Luis Figueroa. A solo home run by DH Omir Santos gave Los Criollos the winning run in the 7th inning. Figueroa had 2 more hits in the game -- a double to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning, and a single after the homer in the 7th. 3B Ramon Vazquez singled twice in the game, in the 6th and the 8th innings.

Hamman Earns A Save In Venezuela

A busy Sunday afternoon and evening in the winter leagues... the Arizona Fall League has the day off on Sundays.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Navegantes del Magallanes 2, Caribes de Anzoategui 0 -- Corey Hamman earned his first save of the winter season for Magallanes. Hamman entered the game in the top of the 8th, with pinch-runner Adenson Chourio on first and no outs. He got a ground out to first to end the inning, then came back out in the 9th, w hen he worked around a lead-off walk for a scoreless inning. Los Caribes were held to just 4 hits in the game, and Los Navegantes did not hit much better -- only 5 hits. Magallanes scored one run in the top of the 1st on a walk, a ground out by DH Mike Ryan which moved the runner over, and an RBI single. A walk and a double brought in the run in the 5th. Ryan also singled in the 8th, but was left on base.

Leones del Caracas 14, Tiburones de La Guaira 5 -- The Sharks were clawed up by the Tigers this afternoon, as every member of the Caracas lineup had at least one hit. La Guaira scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning, but Caracas scored in each of the last 5 innings, including 4-run innings in the 8th and 9th. C Carlos Maldonado singled in the 2nd inning, but did not factor into any of the late scoring.

Bravos de Margarita 5, Aguilas de Zulia 0 -- Los Bravos did all their scoring in the 7th (3 runs) and 8th (2 runs), and held Los Aguilas' hitters to just 5 hits. Andy LaRoche did not get into the game.

Tigres de Aragua 5, Cardinales de Lara 3 -- DH Raul Chavez, C Miguel Perez, and pinch-hitter Hector Gimenez all went hitless in the game, but Chavez was hit by a pitch and scored in the 2-run 1st inning for Aragua. A walk and four singles gave Los Tigres 3 more runs in the 3rd. Lara also had a walk and four singles, plus an Aragua throwing error, in the top of the 5th, when they also scored 3 runs.

Bass Makes A Venezuelan Start

Just one game in the Mexican Pacific League last night:

Naranjeros de Hermosillo 19, Aguilas de Mexicali 1 -- Los Naranjeros did it all on 16 hits, including 2 from former Pirate Humberto Cota, who was playing first base. Hermosillo scored 11 runs in the 5th inning. They sent 15 batters to the plate, and had 6 singles and 5 walks. There was one wild pitch and only 2 of Mexicali's errors occurred in that inning.

VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE:

Navegantes del Magallanes 6, Bravos de Margarita 0 -- 3B Andy LaRoche had one of Los Bravos 5 hits, and that was a double off fellow Pirate Corey Hamman, who pitched the bottom of the 9th for Los Navegantes. After a two-out walk in the bottom of the 1st, the next 15 Margarita batters went down in order. The closest they came to scoring was in the 6th when they loaded the bases on a single, a double, and a walk, but could not score. LaRoche reached as far as third base in the 9th, when Hamman also gave up a single, but LaRoche was left on base when Hamman ended the inning and the game with a ground out. Los Navegantes scored one run in the top of the 1st on former Pirate LF Mike Ryan's RBI single. Ryan also singled in the 2nd, when Magallanes added another 3 runs. A solo homer gave them another run in the 3rd, and they scored again in the 7th. Pirate farmhand Jhonathan Ramos pitched the 8th inning for Margarita, and he struck out three Navegantes in order. Ramos was followed by former Pirate farmhand RHP Yoffri Martinez, who was a little wild (two walks and two wild pitches) but did not give up a hit or a run in the top of the 9th.

Tigres de Aragua 9, Caribes de Anzoategui 2 -- Brian Bass struck out 8 batters in 3.2 innings for Los Tigres and allowed one run on 5 hits and a walk. He worked around the lead-off walk in the 1st, and a single in the 2nd, then two singles in the 3rd, while striking out two batters in each of those innings. He gave up another single and struck out two more in the 4th before being relieved. DH Raul Chavez singled in Aragua's 3-run 3rd inning. He singled again, and 1B Hector Gimenez walked and scored in the 3-run 6th inning. Gimenez also singled and scored in the 2-run 7th inning, and Los Tigres scored again in the 8th. Former Pirate farmhand C Miguel Perez was 0-for-3 at the plate for Aragua. Gabriel Alvarado pitched to three batters for Los Caribes in that 6th inning. He gave up a single (which drove in Gimenez), then threw a wild pitch on strike three, which let another run came in, then got the ground out that ended the inning. Adenson Chourio had a pinch-hit appearance in the top of the 9th. He grounded into a force out, but was safe at first, then he stole second base.

Venezuelan and Mexican Pacific Leagues Underway

Two of the four winter leagues got started on Tuesday. Some games involving Pirates' players and friends:

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE:

Leones de Caracas 3, Tigres de Aragua 1 -- Caracas scored twice in the bottom of the 1st on two singles and an RBI double, then added an unearned run in the 5th, on a hit batter, a throwing error, and an RBI ground out. Former Pirate C Carlos Maldonado was 0-for-4 for Caracas. Los Tigres managed only one run despite out-hitting Caracas 8-6. The run came in the top of the 2nd, on two singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly. 1B Hector Gimenez walked in the 1st inning for Aragua, but was left on base, then was hitless in three more at-bats. Former Pirate C Raul Chavez had one of Aragua's hits, a single in the 1st inning, when he was also left stranded. Former Pirate farmhand Ronald Uviedo pitched the 8th inning for Caracas and allowed just a double.

Caribes de Anzoategui 16, Navegantes del Magallanes 8 -- Los Caribes got the season started witha bang, posting 20 hits, including 6 doubles and a homer. The 7th run 2nd inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and featuring 4 doubles, two singles, two walks, and a wild pitch, put the game out of reach for Magallanes. Unfortunately, none of the Pirates' farmhand listed on the Caribes' roster got into the game. Former Indy Indian LF Mike Ryan, who has done well in previous winter league experiences, got this winter season off to a good start with a double and a solo home run, for 3 RBI. Reliever Corey Hamman pitched the top of the 9th for Magallanes. He hit a batter, then got two strikeouts, and gave up an RBI double.

Bravos de Margarita 4, Tiburones de La Guaira 3 -- La Guaira had a 3-run lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. That's when Los Bravos tied the game with a 3-run rally. Singles by RF Rene Reyes and 3B/1B Andy LaRoche opened the inning, and a walk to 1B Javier Brito loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly brought in Reyes, and two RBI singles plated LaRoche, then Brito. La Guaira put runners on the corners in the top of the 8th, but did not score. Margarita loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame (LaRoche struck out), but a timely double play ended the inning without a run scoring. La Guaira went down in order, on three strikeouts in the top of the 9th. Margarita won it in the bottom of the 9th on a single and an RBI double.

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE:

Yaquis de Obregon 7, Mayos de Navojoa 1 -- Obregon scored in three of the first four innings, and held Navojoa to just 5 hits and one run, which scored in the 9th. Former Pirate CF Jeff Salazar singled in the 4th inning for Obregon, and scored on a subsequent home run. He also reached base on a grounder force out at second base (he probably beat out the relay throw to first), and then stole second base in the 2nd inning.

Fall and Winter League Rosters

The Arizona Fall League begins play today, with seven Pirates' farmhands on the roster for the Mesa Solar Sox. Players from the Los Angeles Angels, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs, and the New York Mets will round out the Solar Sox' roster. Pitchers Brian Leach, Aaron Pribanic, and Justin Wilson are all participating, and all are expected to pitch in relief, as other pitchers have the priority for starting roles. Team USA's Justin De Fratus (Phillies) is also on the roster, so he must be planning to join the Solar Sox later in the week after the Pan Am tournament wraps up.

Behind the plate, look for C Tony Sanchez, who is trying to make up time after missing much of the regular season due to a fractured jaw. Sanchez has also been asked by MLB to keep a blog of his experiences in the Arizona Fall League. (He hasn't started it yet -- stay tuned.) Phillies' pitcher Josh Zeid and Angels pitcher Ryan Brasier, both slated as starters for the Solar Sox, have also been asked to write blogs.

Altoona infielders Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer will be sharing some infield time with six other infielders, including Josh Vitters of the Cubs. Their Curve teammate Andrew Lambo will be sharing outfield duties with four other outfielders, including Phillies' John Mayberry.

Mexican Pacific League

Los Venados de Mazatlan is the hometown team of OF Rogelios Noris. He got in a little playing time last year as a rookie, and was a bit of a surprise, with some home runs and some very good pinch-hit appearances. The 21-year-old hit .236 with the West Virginia Power during the 2010 season.

Also listed on one Mazatlan roster (but not all) is LHP Jovany Lopez. Lopez is a 19 year old from Los Mochis, who has spent two seasons with the Pirates Venezuelan Summer League team. This season, he made 18 relief appearances (27.2 innings) and had a 5-0 record with a 3.90 ERA. He gave up 30 hits and 12 earned runs, but allowed only 5 walks and struck out 21.

Three former Pirates are also playing in the Mexican Pacific League: Inf/Of Yurendell de Caster is with Los Algodoneros de Guasave, C Humberto Cota is on the roster of Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo, and OF Jeff Salazar will be in center field for Los Yaquis de Obregon.

Van Every Homers As Indians Lose Finale

Louisville Bats 6, Indianapolis Indians 3 .. (box)

The Indianapolis Indians wrapped up the 2010 season at Slugger Field in Louisville, Kentucky this afternoon with a loss to the Bats. The Tribe finished the season just below .500 with a 71-73 record, and they finished the season series against Louisville with the Bats having a 12-10 game advantage. The Bats' win, combined with Columbus' 5-2 loss to Toledo, gives the Bats the International League Western Division title. The Clippers had been in first place in the Western Division for most of the season, but Louisville had a second-half surge and slipped up behind the Clippers for the win at the finish line. The Clippers will be the Wild Card team in the International League Playoffs, which begin on Wednesday.

NOTES:

The Indians begin the 2011 season on Thursday April 7th, at home at Victory Field, against the Columbus Clippers. That's just 7 months from tomorrow, and 213 days away.

Louisville Bats 16, Indianapolis Indians 6 .. (box)

IMG_4595It got ugly early at Victory Field tonight, and it didn't get much better as the game went on. The Louisville Bats clobbered the Indianapolis Indians 16 - 6, and the two teams combined for a total of 30 hits.

The Ugly:

* Starter Mike Crotta (photo) lasted only one inning. The first four batters in the top of the 1st reached base: a slow roller single to short that CF Dave Sappelt beat out for a single, double down the left field line by SS Zach Cozart, four pitch walk to RF Danny Dorn, and a bases-clearing triple to the 418' mark in left-center by 1B Todd Frazier. Tribe SS Pedro Ciriaco made a diving stop and great throw to first base to make the first out of the inning on C Devin Mesoraco, then Crotta walked 3B Mike Costanzo. 2B Eric Eymann hit a little dribbler just a few feet in front of home, but when C Jason Jaramillo had to leave the plate to field the ball, since he had a better angle than Crotta did for the throw to first, then Frazier took the opportunity to break for home and score. LF Michael Griffin capped the inning with a wind-aided 2-run homer over the right field wall. Crotta struck out Bats' pitcher Tom Cochran to end the inning. The Bats had a 6 run advantage before the Indians came to the plate.

IMG_4602*After two scoreless innings and just one walk, reliever Corey Hamman (photo) got into trouble in the 4th. With one out, Michael Griffin drove another triple to the 418' sign in left-center. Hamman struck out Cochran again, for the second out of the inning, but he had trouble finding that third out. The next four batters reached base -- an RBI double into center field by Sappelt, a walk to Cozart, a 2-RBI double that rattled around in the right field corner by Dorn, and an RBI double out of CF Alex Presley's reach in center by Frazier. Bats lead, 10-3.

*Anthony Claggett gave up another 2-run homer to Griffin in the 5th inning, for a 12 - 3 lead. Then he gave up 3 more runs in the 7th. With one out, he surrendered a double to Eymann, singles to Griffin and pinch-hitter Sean Henry (RBI), then after a ground out, another RBI single by Cozart. Claggett was relieved by Brian Bass, who gave up another single to Dorn, driving in the third run of the inning. Bats up 15-6.

Clippers Sail Past Indians

IMG_4539

Columbus Clippers 5, Indianapolis Indians 2 .. (box)

IMG_3243The Columbus pitching staff held the Indianapolis Indians to just 4 hits at Victory Field tonight, while the Clippers' batters took advantage of timely hitting to slide past the Tribe. The Clippers' win, combined with the Louisville Bats' 4-1 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens, means that the Clippers have regained first place in the International League Western Division by half a game. It also means that Louisville is now on top of the Wild Card pile, with the Buffalo Bison and Syracuse Chiefs both tied at 4 games back.

RF Brandon Moss (photo) had two of the Indians four hits, a double and a single. LF Kevin Melillo and 3B Akinori Iwamura each had a hit. Three batters walked -- Iwamura, CF Alex Presley, and 1B John Bowker -- and that was all the base runners the Indians had.

The Indians threatened in the top of the 1st inning, when Presley walked with two outs, and Moss ripped a line drive down the right field line for a single, sending Presley to third base. That inning ended when Bowker struck out. The Tribe were first onto the scoreboard, with a rally in the 3rd inning. Kevin Melillo got things stared with a grounder through the hole, just past the back-handed dive by Clippers' 1B Wes Hodges, for a one-out single. Aki Iwamura worked a walk. Alex Presley grounded to second base, and it looked like the Clippers were going to halt the rally with an inning-ending double play. Iwamura was forced out at second base, but the speedy Presley beat out the relay throw back to first base. That gave Brandon Moss a chance to come to the plate, and he took a fly ball past CF Ezequiel Carrera and into the deepest part of the stadium in the left-center alley. The double drove in both Melillo and Presley, who was hustling all the way from first base, and the Indians had a 2-0 lead.

5-Run Inning Lifts Clippers Over Tribe

Columbus Clippers 10, Indianapolis Indians 5 .. (box)

IMG_4254The Indianapolis Indians posted 13 hits this evening at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, with every member of the batting order but one collecting at least one hit. But the Clippers posted 14 hits, and added a 5-run 7th inning, to sail past the Indians for the win. The Louisville Bats also won today, beating the Toledo Mud Hens 8-0, so the Bats remain 1.5 games ahead of Columbus in the International League Western Division, with one week left in the season.

Indians' starter Mike Crotta (photo) struggled in each inning he pitched, and after 4+ innings, he had already thrown 90 pitches (56 strikes). He had two runners on base in the 1st inning, but got out of that jam without a run scoring. With one out, CF Ezequiel Carrera reached base on a throwing error by SS Pedro Ciriaco. Carrera stole second base, and after 2B Cord Phelps walked, both Carrera and Phelps pulled off a double steal to put both into scoring position. Crotta bore down and struck out 1B Wes Hodges, then ended the inning when DH Jordan Brown flied out.

That was Crotta's only scoreless inning. He gave up one run in each of the next three innings and was responsible for 2 runs in the 5th. 3B Jared Goedert led off the 2nd inning with a single, and he also stole second base. SS Drew Sutton walked, then LF Matt McBride reached on a tapper back to the mound that Crotta could not handle. Goedert scored from second base on the play, to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead.

The Indians had gone down in order in the first two innings, but they came right back with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd. With one out, Pedro Ciriaco doubled into left field. 2B Brian Friday worked a walk, then LF Kevin Melillo loaded the bases with a line drive up the middle for a single. 3B Akinori Iwamura lifted a long fly ball into left field, which Columbus LF McBride had to keep chasing back and back.. but he caught it on the warning track for a sacrifice fly, as it let Ciriaco score from third base to tie the score. CF Alex Presley grounded through the right side of the infield for an RBI single that brought in both Friday and Melillo. DH Brandon Moss lined another single into right field, but a fly out ended the inning. The Indians had taken what would be their only lead of the game, 3-1.
