WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

McPherson at one time was considered one of the top power hitting prospects in baseball, although in retrospect he was probably overrated all along.  He had some huge seasons in the minors, but generally in very favorable hitting environments.  The ramifications of his K rate–generally around one every three ABs in the upper minors–probably got too little attention as well.  Another factor that may have affected his hitting has been back problems, which have cost him two entire seasons.  Whatever the cause, he never made much contact in the majors, although it’s still surprising that he got only 414 plate appearances at that level.  The Pirates signed him in mid-August after the White Sox let him go.

2001
R+:  395/449/605, 124 AB, 11 2B, 5 HR, 12 BB, 22 K, 1-1 SB

McPherson had an outstanding debut in advanced rookie ball, although that’s a slightly low level for a college draftee.

2002
A:  277/381/427, 499 AB, 24 2B, 3 3B, 15 HR, 78 BB, 128 K, 30-36 SB

McPherson hit well but didn’t dominate in low A, drawing a lot of walks but showing only decent power.

2003
A+:  308/404/606, 292 AB, 21 2B, 6 3B, 18 HR, 41 BB, 79 K, 12-18 SB
AA:  314/426/569, 102 AB, 9 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 19 BB, 25 K, 4-4 SB

McPherson had a huge year that vaulted him high up on all the prospect lists.  A lot of his production, though, occurred in a very high offense environment in the California League.

2004
AA:  321/404/660, 262 AB, 17 2B, 6 3B, 20 HR, 34 BB, 74 K, 6-11 SB
AAA:  313/370/680, 259 AB, 19 2B, 8 3B, 20 HR, 23 BB, 95 K, 6-9 SB
MLB:  225/279/475, 40 AB, 1 2B, 3 HR, 3 BB, 17 K, 1-1 SB

McPherson had another huge season in the minors, split between AA and AAA.  It came in very high offense environments again, though, in Arkansas in the Texas League and Salt Lake City in the Pacific Coast League.  Another warning sign was a very high K rate.  The Angels called him up in September after Troy Glaus got hurt and McPherson played third for them in the playoffs.

2005
R:  222/222/556, 9 AB, 1 2B, 1 3B, 5 K
A+:  438/550/938, 16 AB, 2 2B, 2 HR, 3 BB, 4 K, 1-2 SB
AAA:  278/349/704, 54 AB, 1 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 7 BB, 20 K, 1-3 SB
MLB:  244/295/449, 205 AB, 14 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 14 BB, 64 K, 3-6 SB

The Angels let Glaus go as a free agent and went with McPherson at third.  He struggled to make contact until late May, when he started hitting well, but he suffered a hip injury in early July that effectively ended his season.

2006
AAA:  250/307/596, 208 AB, 11 2B, 5 3B, 17 HR, 15 BB, 88 K, 3-4 SB
MLB:  261/298/478, 115 AB, 4 2B, 7 HR, 6 BB, 40 K, 1-1 SB

McPherson didn’t hit well in spring training and the Angels sent him to AAA to open the season.  They brought him up in May and he struggled severely with the strike zone, although he continued to show good power.  He went on the disabled list in late July with back spasms and didn’t return until near the end of the season.

2007
DNP

McPherson missed the entire season following back surgery and the Angels non-tendered him in the off-season.

2008
AAA:  275/379/618, 448 AB, 22 2B, 3 3B, 42 HR, 76 BB, 168 K, 14-20 SB
MLB:  182/400/364, 11 AB, 2 2B, 4 BB, 5 K

The Marlins signed McPherson to a major league deal but optioned him to AAA to start the season.  He hit a ton of HRs, but continued to fan at a prodigious rate.  The Marlins called him up in September, but didn’t play him much.

2009
DNP

The Marlins released McPherson in spring training. He signed a minor league deal with the Giants, but ended up missing the entire season due to back problems.

2010
AAA:  267/339/541, 318 AB, 17 2B, 2 3B, 22 HR, 31 BB, 101 K, 1-1 SB

The A’s signed McPherson to a minor league deal and he played the majority of the season.  He continued to hit for very good power and to strike out in a third of his ABs, but his hitting overall dropped off.

2011
AAA:  283/334/505, 392 AB, 27 2B, 20 HR, 31 BB, 126 K, 1-3 SB
MLB:  133/133/133, 15 AB, 7 K

McPherson spent the year with the White Sox.  They called him up for two weeks in May, but outrighted him at the end of the month and he spent the rest of the year in AAA.  He had about the same season as the year before, but his power dropped off a little more.

2012
AAA (CWS):  253/335/463, 229 AB, 12 2B, 12 HR, 28 BB, 83 K, 2-3 SB
AAA (Pgh):  299/372/591, 77 AB, 4 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 9 BB, 32 K, 1-1 SB

McPherson returned to the White Sox and played in AAA for them until they released him in early August.  His hitting slipped a little more and his K rate increased a little.  The Pirates signed him a couple weeks after he was released, probably to help Indianapolis in the International League playoffs.  He hit very well in 20 games with the Indians, although he also struck out a ton.

McPherson will be a free agent in the fall.  It seems unlikely he’d want to come back to the Pirates’ organization with Pedro Alvarez around, although it’s probably past the point of him having a real chance to play in the majors, anyway.
