Spikes Lose Home Opener; Extra Inning Wins For Curve And Marauders
Saturday’s games for the Pirates’ lower minor league affiliates
Williamsburg Crosscutters 5, State College Spikes 3 (box)
A full house sell-out in State College went home disappointed tonight, as the Spikes lost their home opener. The Crosscutters scored 2 runs off starter Zack Dodson in the 2nd inning, on a walk, a single, a double, and a sacrifice fly. Dodson gave up only one other hit in 3 more innings of work, and erased that runner with a double play.
The Spikes tied the score with a run in the bottom of the 2nd and another run in the 3rd. A walk to 1B Gerlis Rodriguez open the inning. A single by DH Kelson Brown, and a fielding error on CF Justin Bencsko’s ball to first base loaded the bases for the Spikes. C Miguel Mendez drove in Rodriguez with an RBI ground out. Another fielding error put SS Walker Gourley on second base to begin the 3rd. He scored on 3B Chase Lyles’ line drive single into left field.
Mitch Fienemann took over from Dodson to begin the 4th. After getting two outs, He gave up a single, a stolen base, and an RBI single to take a 3-2 lead. The Spikes tied it up again in the bottom of the inning, on a double by Mendez, a passed ball, and a single by LF Melvin De La Cruz.
But the Crosscutters kept hammering at Fienemann, scoring a run in the 7th on two singles and a double, and another run in the 8th on four singles. Sandobal Septimo finished the 8th for Fienemann, then pitched a scoreless 9th, despite giving up a double and a single.
Chase Lyles had two singles for the Spikes, and Justin Bencsko also had a single. The Spikes collected 6 hits, while the Crosscutters posted 14 hits.
Homers For Anderson (2), Harrison, Latimore, Chambers, and Both Hernandezes
Lots of home runs in the minor leagues tonight, including Jim Negrych’s 2-run homer that won the game for the Indianapolis Indians.

Bradenton Marauders 9, Jupiter Hammerheads 7 (box)
A 5-run inning boosted the Marauders in the early part of the game, and then the Marauders had to use three home runs to make up for making 4 errors in the field. The two teams combined for 27 hits in the game, with the Marauders accounting for 16 of them.
Bradenton starter Nate Adcock gave up a run in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings. Two singles and two throwing errors brought in a run in the 2nd, and a double, a single, and an RBI ground out plated the run in the 3rd.
The newest Marauder, 2B Jorge Bishop, got the party started in the bottom of the 3rd with a lead-off triple. A single by SS Greg Picart brought in Bishop. Another single by CF Robbie Grossman and a double by rehabbing DH Steve Pearce plated Picart. LF Quincy Latimore singled to score Grossman and Pearce. Two more singles, by 1B Calvin Anderson and 3B Adenson Chourio scored Latimore. The Marauders almost had another run, but Adenson Chourio was throw out at the plate after C Andrew Walker’s single. The Marauders came out of the inning with a 5-2 lead.
Adcock got into trouble in the 5th, when a fielding error began the inning. A double, a single, a passed ball, and two RBI ground outs brought in three more runs, only one of which was earned. Another double, a fielding error, two singles and a sacrifice fly brought in an earned run and an unearned run in the 6th.
The Marauders kept up with the help of the homers. Calvin Anderson smacked a solo homer in the 5th. A double by Bishop, a stolen base, and a wild pitch added another run in the 6th, to tie the score at 7-7. Back-to-back homers by Quincy Latimore and Calvin Anderson in the 7th gave the Marauders the go-ahead run and one more for insurance.
Tyler Cox, Ramon Aguero, and Noah Krol each pitched one scoreless inning of relief, with 5 strikeouts between them. Cox earned the win, since he was the pitcher of record when Latimore and Anderson homered in the 7th. Aguero was credited with a Hold, and Krol earned his 16th save of the season, tying him for the lead in the Florida State League.
Rehabbing Steve Pearce went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, a walk, and a strikeout in the game.
Curve Hold On For Win Over Rock Cats
The Bradenton Marauders and the Florida State League had a scheduled day off today, after yesterday’s All-Star Game. The West Virginia Power also had a scheduled day off. That leaves just the Curve…

Altoona Curve 6, New Britain Rock Cats 5 (box)
The Curve broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 8th inning, then had to hold off a Rock Cats’ rally in the 9th to preserve the win.
The Rock Cats’ began the scoring with a run on a single, a ground out, a stolen base, and an RBI ground out in the 1st inning. The Curve answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. RF Miles Durham led off with a walk, and LF Anthony Norman lined a single into right field. SS Chase d’Arnaud dropped down what he thought would be a sacrifice bunt, but he beat the throw, claiming a hit to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch scored Durham from third base, and moved both Norman and d’Arnaud up a base. Then a grounder to short allowed Norman to score, and the Curve were ahead, 2-1.
They repeated the same run pattern in the 4th inning. The Rock Cats scored one run in the top of the inning, on a double, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. Then the Curve came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the frame. This time it was 2B Jordy Mercer who led off with a walk, and he scored on C Kris Watts’ double. Watts moved to third base on a ground out, and he scored on Durham’s single up the middle.
Curve starter Justin Wilson kept the Rock Cats from scoring in the 5th, but gave up another 2 runs in the 6th. A lead-off single, plus back-to-back doubles brought in the 2 runs, tying the score at 4-4. Wilson exited after that inning, allowing the 4 runs on 10 hits, no walks, with 2 strikeouts. He left the game with the score tied, so was not going to factor into the decision.
Mike Dubee pitched a perfect 7th inning, preserving the tie. He gave up a single in the 8th, and after a bunt and a throwing error by SS d’Arnaud, the Rock Cats had runners on the corners with two outs. Dubee was relieved by Danny Moskos, who finished the inning with a ground out, preserving the tie.
The Curve couldn’t get much going in the 6th or 7th inning, but they broke the tie in the 8th. CF Gorkys Hernandez opened the inning with a single, and 3B Josh Harrison beat out a bunt for another single. 1B Matt Hague bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, which erased Harrison, but let Hernandez move to third base. Mercer’s double easily brought Hernandez in from third to take the lead. After a pitching change, Watts lined a single into center field, and Mercer also scored, to give the Curve an insurance run they would need.
Moskos came back out to pitch the 9th inning. He began the inning by giving up a single and a walk. A double play put the lead runner on third with two outs, and a single drove that runner across the plate. But Moskos held on to get a ground out, ending the game and giving the Curve the win. Moskos earned his second win of the season. Hernandez, Mercer, Watts, and Norman all had 2 hits in the game (the Curve had a total of 11 hits), and Watts also contributed 2 RBI.

Alderson Is POW, Hughes Earns 8th Win
Curve pitcher Tim Alderson was named the Eastern League’s Pitcher Of The Week, for the week of May 24 – 30. Alderson won two starts during that week, on the 24th and the 29th. In 13 innings of work, he gave up only one run on 8 hits and 3 walks, with a total of 10 strikeouts. His ERA for the two games was 0.69. Overall, Alderson has a 4-2 record and a 4.75 ERA in 10 starts for the Curve.
Reliever Ronald Uviedo, who has made 16 appearances for the Curve this season, was traded today to the Blue Jays in return for starter Dana Eveland, who will be joining the Pirates’ rotation. Uviedo was on the Pirates’ 40-man roster, so trading him opens up a space on the 40-man roster for Eveland. Uviedo has an 0-2 record with the Curve, no saves, and a 3.22 ERA in 22.1 innings. He has allowed 13 hits, 8 runs (3 homers), and 12 walks, while striking out 28 batters.
Altoona Curve 4, New Britain Rock Cats 1 (box)
Jared Hughes pitched 7 strong innings, allowing only one run on 5 hits and a walk, while striking out 6 batters, to earn his Eastern League-leading 8th win of the season. Hughes gave up the run in the 1st inning. A lead-off single, a stolen base, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI ground out gave the Rock Cats their only tally of the game. Hughes gave up a double in each of the next two innings, and a single in the 4th, but each time worked around the base runner to keep the Rock Cats from scoring. The last single plus the walk came in the 6th inning, but again Hughes bore down and ended the inning with the runners still standing there. He finished off his night with two strikeouts in the 7th inning.
The Curve put runners on base in each of the first 4 innings, but could not push them around to score. Two singles by CF Gorkys Hernandez, walks by 1B Matt Hague and RF Miles Durham, and a double by LF Alex Presley were not enough to bring in any runs. Finally in the 3rd, the Curve tied the score at 1-1 when C Kris Watts led off with a double, moved to third on SS Chase d’Arnaud’s single, and scored on Hernandez’s sacrifice fly. A walk to DH Jim Negrych and a single by Hague loaded the bases, but all three were left on base when the inning ended.
D’Arnaud got the go-ahead RBI in the 6th. Presley and Durham led off with back-to-back singles. A bunt by Watts went a little awry, and Durham was out at second, but Presley made it safely to third and Watts was safe on first. That set up d’Arnaud, who lined a double into left field, scoring Presley, for the 2-1 lead.
The Curve tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the 9th. Negrych reached second base on a throwing error by the Rock Cats’ third baseman Juan Portes. Hague walked, then 2B Jordy Mercer grounded to third base. Portes made the force out of Negrych at third, but then made a throwing error, and Hague ended up on third, with Mercer safe on second. A wild pitch allowed Hague to score, and a single by 3B Josh Harrison brought in Mercer.
Jeff Sues pitched a scoreless 8th inning for the Curve, retiring the side in order. Danny Moskos finished things off by striking out the side in the 9th, earning his 12th save of the season.
The Curve have a school-day special in New Britain tomorrow, with the game beginning at 10:30 am.
Wins for Alderson and Baker, Three Hits For Rubinstein
Saturday night in the lower minor leagues:
Altoona Curve 7, Reading Phillies 3 (box)
Four runs in the 4th inning gave the Curve the edge and propelled starter Tim Alderson to his 4th win of the season. Alderson pitched 6 innings and allowed just one run on 4 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 5 batters.
The Curve scored a run in the bottom of the 1st, on a lead-off walk by SS Chase d’Arnaud, singles by CF Gorkys Hernandez and 3B Josh Harrison, and a grounder by 1B Matt Hague that became a double play (no RBI for Hague). The Phillies’ run came in the 2nd inning. Former Indy Indian 3B Tagg Bozied began the inning with a single, and went to second on a wild pitch. A walk and a grounder put Bozied on third base, and another single drove Bozied across the plate to tie the score.
The big 4th inning began with a single by LF Alex Presley. A passed ball put Presley on second. After a walk by RF Miles Durham, Alderson dropped down a sacrifice bunt that went for a fielder’s choice as Presley made it to third base before the throw. With the bases loaded, Chase d’Arnaud walked, forcing in Presley with the go-ahead run. Gorkys Hernadez’s sacrifice fly plated Durham, and Josh Harrison’s double into right field scored both Alderson and d’Arnaud.
C Hector Gimenez blasted his third home run in three games with a 2-run shot in the 7th, following a single by Hague.
Alderson allowed 2 hits and 2 walks over the last 4 innings he pitched. Jack Taschner, with the Curve on a rehab assignment, pitched the 7th inning. He retired the first two batters, then gave up a single, a walk, and an RBI single for one run. The inning ended on a pop out.
Mike Dubee pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th. Danny Moskos pitched the 9th, and allowed a run on two singles, a hit batter, and a sacrifice fly.
Josh Harrison and Alex Presley each had a double and a single for the Curve, and both Harrison and Gimenez contributed 2 RBI.
Curve Win Lucky 7th Straight; Krol Earns Lucky 13th Save;
Altoona Curve 5, Akron Aeros 3 (box)
Rudy Owens earned his 4th win of the season, as the Curve won their 7th straight game and moved to 4 games ahead of second-place Richmond in the Eastern League’s Western Division.SS Chase d’Arnaud belted 3 hits and four Curve batters had 2 hits each, including a homer by C Hector Gimenez.
After two quiet innings by both teams, LF Alex Presley opened the 3rd inning with an infield single, and Gimenez homered to give the Curve a 2-0 lead. The Aeros got one run back in the bottom of the inning. LF John Drennen led off with a triple. The next batter, 2B Criston Arnal, bounced back to the mound, and in the ensuing run-down, Drennen was tagged out, but he stalled long enough for Arnal to reach second base safely. A passed ball put Arnal on third base, and a ground out brought him across the plate.
Four singles, by 2B Josh Harrison, DH Matt Hague, RF Miles Durham, and Presley brought in two more Curve runs in the top of the 4th inning. Akron again came back with one run in the bottom of the frame, on a double, a ground out, and a balk by Owens. The Curve got that run back in the top of the 5th. D’Arnaud doubled to begin the inning, and scored on Hague’s second single, to give the Curve a 5-2 lead.
Owens gave up just those two runs over 7 innings of work, on 2 hits and a walk, plus the balk and the passed ball by Gimenez. He also struck out 2 batters. Ronald Uviedo pitched the 8th inning, and gave up one run on two walks and a single plus an RBI grounder. Danny Moskos earned his 11th save, retiring the side in the 9th.
Curve Sweep Erie On Ford’s Homer
Altoona Curve 2, Erie SeaWolves 1 (box)
The Curve extended their winning streak to 5 games with a win over Erie on Sunday afternoon. That gives them a sweep of the 4-game series in Erie, and puts them 11 games over .500 with a 27-16 record. They are in first place in the Eastern League Western Division, 3 games ahead of the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
Justin Wilson made the start for the Curve and allowed only one unearned run in his 6 innings of work for his 2nd win of the season. Wilson allowed only 2 hit and 3 walks, while striking out 10 Erie batters. He worked around two walks in the 1st inning, then retired the side in the 2nd. The unearned run came in the 3rd inning. A single into center field plus a fielding error by CF Gorkys Hernandez put a runner on second base, and a second single put runners on the corners. A double steal (home and second) brought in the run for Erie, unearned because of the error. Wilson gave up another walk in the 4th, but C Hector Gimenez threw that runner out trying to steal second base. After that steal attempt, Wilson retired the next 7 batters in order.
Dustin Molleken pitched 2 innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out 4 batters. Danny Moskos pitched the 9th inning, working around a walk to keep the SeaWolves at bay and earn his 10th save.
The Curve were not doing much hitting either, and they were making it look like Wilson was going to suffer from lack of run support again. Erie starter Andy Oliver also pitched well, allowing only 4 hits, while striking out 9 Curve batters. The Curve put up a lot of donuts for the first 6 innings. DH Jim Negrych singled in the 1st, and 1B Matt Hague reached on a throwing error, but both were left on base. C Hector Gimenez walked to lead off the 2nd, and reached third base, but was left there. RF Miles Durham singled in the 4th, with the same result.
Finally in the 7th, the Curve made Wilson happy. With one out, Gimenez singled, then after a strikeout, 2B Shelby Ford crushed his third home run of the season over the left field wall, giving the Curve a 2-1 lead.
The Curve worked two more walks (Hernandez and Gimenez again) over the last two innings, but did not score again.
