SCOUTING REPORT
The Pirates added Delwyn Young in 2009 on a very low risk deal, sending two players to be named later for Young, who had been designated for assignment two days prior to the deal.  The Pirates ended up sending minor leaguer Eric Krebs and cash considerations.  Young ended up hitting for a .266/.326/.381 line, although his numbers were impacted by a full time move to second base in the final two months.

Ever since the acquisition, Young had been working with 2009 infield coach Perry Hill on a transition to second base.  After Freddy Sanchez was traded to the San Francisco Giants, the Pirates gave Young a chance to be the full time second baseman.  The experiment, however, didn’t work out as planned, forcing the Pirates to seek help for the second base position in the off-season with the Akinori Iwamura trade.

Young had a .323/.381/.427 line in 167 at-bats as a bench player prior to taking over full time at second base.  In his time at second, Young posted a .214/.267/.332 line in 187 at-bats. The poor numbers could be attributed to the amount of time and effort Young spent on his defense at second base.  The only problem is that Young’s defense didn’t come along as expected, with a -17.1 UZR/150 at second base.

Young will move back to a bench role in 2010, where he showed a lot of success in 2009.  If he can replicate the 2009 bench numbers, he will be a big asset for the Pirates, with the ability to fill in at second base or the corner outfield spots in the case of an emergency.
