WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Herrera was the Pirates’ only big signing during the 2010 signing period apart from Luis Heredia.  Herrera was listed as a shortstop when they signed him, but he played third exclusively during his debut season, with the exception of two games at second.  Because he’s not a big guy but has shown some power, he draws comparisons to Alen Hanson.  He’s heavier in build than Hanson, though, and doesn’t have Hanson’s speed.  He also doesn’t have the potential to play short or the Pirates would be trying him there.

2011
VSL:  308/413/472, 214 AB, 19 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 32 BB, 40 K, 16-24 SB

Herrera had a strong debut, hitting for good power, especially for his size.  The one negative was a somewhat high K rate.

2012
R:  281/341/482, 199 AB, 11 2B, 4 3B, 7 HR, 18 BB, 41 K, 11-15 SB
A-:  321/345/536, 28 AB, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 6 K, 1-1 SB

Herrera had an excellent season in the GCL, again hitting for good power with OK plate discipline.  He also showed some speed on the bases.  He continued to hit well in a brief stint at State College.  He played second exclusively at both levels.  Baseball America named him the 7th best prospect in the GCL.

Herrera will be the second baseman at West Virginia in 2013.  If the Pirates are extremely lucky, he’ll duplicate the success that Alen Hanson and Gregory Polanco had in 2012.
