Improvement Since the Trades

The Ryan Doumit situation has brought up a lot of speculation, with the biggest theories suggesting that the starting catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates is disgruntled over the trades that have been made this season. Personally I don’t want to speculate on what the disagreement between John Russell and Doumit was. However, that won’t stop me from looking at whether or not there is any reason to be disgruntled over the...

Pirates Notebook: No need to call Clement up

Jeff Clement has gotten off to a great start with the Indianapolis Indians, batting for a .343/.439/.800 line with five homers in 35 at-bats in his first nine games since coming over in the Jack Wilson/Ian Snell deal. That gives Clement a .292/.372/.531 line in 407 AAA at-bats this season, with 19 homers. Clement was the top prospect in Seattle in 2006 and 2008, falling to number two on the list in 2007 due to Adam Jones taking over...

Adam LaRoche Traded to Red Sox

UPDATE 1:41 PM: The 40-Man Roster/Payroll chart is updated with the move. Argenis Diaz replaces LaRoche on the 40-man roster. Assuming the Pirates didn’t send any money to the Red Sox (and there’s no word yet), the Pirates saved $3 M on this deal. The Payroll Commitments Chart, 25-Man Roster page, and Neal Huntington trade history has also been updated. I’m guessing Garrett Jones is going to take over at first base...

Garrett Jones Should Swing From His Heels Every AB

Garrett Jones turned 28 last month. He has spent most of the last year-and-a-half in the minors. During that time he has consistently put up some solid power numbers – averaging 20 homers and 30 doubles during full AAA seasons. Prior to this year, his MLB experience consisted of 84 PAs, a .208 BA and a 60 OPS+. Prior to this year, it wouldn’t have been unheard of for him to have never seen the light of a Major League...

Pirates Notebook: Could Garrett Jones be part of the future?

One thing that always frustrates me as a Pittsburgh Pirates fan is the fact that we never seem to stumble on to the “where did that come from” major league players. I’m talking about guys like Jorge Cantu with Florida last year, or Kyle Lohse with St. Louis. Even when we try, like adding Eric Hinske, who hit 20 homers for Tampa Bay last year, it doesn’t work out. Maybe Garrett Jones could be that guy for us....
