The Disabled List: Updates for August 9th

The Pittsburgh Pirates broke their worst stretch of the 2011 season last night, winning 5-0 against the San Francisco Giants, and snapping a ten game losing streak.  They’ve dealt with a lot of injuries this year, and you could argue that things really started to fall apart on July 23rd, when they lost Alex Presley from the lineup.  The Pirates have gone 4-13 since that date.  The loss of Presley, combined with the earlier loss...

Rehab Updates: Ryan Doumit, Ross Ohlendorf

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced two rehab updates this morning: -Ryan Doumit is set to begin a rehab assignment today with the Bradenton Marauders.  Position players can only spend 20 days on rehab assignment, which means that Doumit will return to Pittsburgh no later than August 10th.  My guess is he would likely assume the starting catching role, although I could see Michael McKenry getting some playing time, based on how he...

The Disabled List: Updates for July 6th

I get a lot of e-mails wondering about the status of the injured players on the Pirates’ roster.  It makes sense that it’s a hot topic.  The Pirates currently have ten players on the disabled list.  I report the updates when I get them, although in most cases there’s really not much to report.  We don’t usually see a lot of updates until a player gets close to his rehab assignment.  When the rehab assignment...

Dejan Kovacevic mentions that Evan Meek could go on the disabled list tomorrow, allowing the right hander to regain strength in his right shoulder.  Kovacevic adds that Daniel Moskos could be a favorite to take Meek’s place on the 25-man roster. Meek came in to the season as the number two bullpen option, behind Joel Hanrahan.  He has struggled this year, dealing with a virus, and has allowed five runs in eight innings, with an...

Ohlendorf to the DL, Daniel McCutchen Recalled

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed Ross Ohlendorf on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder strain, and have recalled right handed pitcher Daniel McCutchen from Indianapolis.  My guess is that Jeff Karstens will take Ohlendorf’s place in the starting rotation while he is out, with McCutchen taking over as the long man in the bullpen. The 40-man roster and payroll page is updated with the set of moves.  The 25-man roster has...
