WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Goedert has been mostly a good hitter in the upper minors, with solid or better power.  He had very good plate discipline in the low minors, but it hasn’t been as good higher up.  He struggled through much of the 2007-09 seasons, some of it seemingly related to recurring shoulder problems.  He’s played mostly third in the minors, where he’s not a good defender.  He’s also seen time at first, second and in the outfield corners.

2006
A-:  269/328/382, 238 AB, 14 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 19 BB, 28 K, 1-1 SB

Goedert played third regularly in short season ball, but didn’t hit a great deal.  He had labrum surgery after the season,

2007
A:  364/475/715, 165 AB, 10 2B, 16 HR, 35 BB, 29 K, 0-1 SB
A+:  256/369/424, 125 AB, 9 2B, 4 HR, 23 BB, 25 K, 1-1 SB

Goedert provided a good lesson on why it’s not a good idea to get all worked up over a college hitter tearing up low A.  He hit even better there than Matt Curry did.  He moved up to high A and didn’t hit nearly as much, although his plate discipline remained very good and he hit for decent power.  He also reinjured the shoulder, which cost him a good deal of playing time.  He played mainly second in high A.

2008
A+:  255/336/373, 467 AB, 23 2B, 1 3B, 10 HR, 57 BB, 77 K, 1-2 SB

Goedert spent the season back in high A, playing mostly third but some at second.  He didn’t hit with much authority, but continued to post a good BB:K ratio.  The shoulder injury apparently continued to bother him.

2009
AA:  229/309/348, 313 AB, 22 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 34 BB, 47 K, 1-1 SB

The Indians moved Goedert up to AA and he struggled, despite continued good BB and K numbers.  He also missed part of the season with an oblique injury.

2010
AA:  325/382/540, 163 AB, 14 2B, 7 HR, 16 BB, 35 K, 2-2 SB
AAA:  261/345/528, 318 AB, 23 2B, 1 3B, 20 HR, 37 BB, 77 K, 2-2 SB

Goedert returned to AA and started hitting very well, although his plate discipline slipped.  He hit pretty much the same after a promotion to AAA, except for an 80-point drop in his BABIP.  The Indians added him to their 40-man roster after the season.

2011
AA:  276/389/655, 29 AB, 2 2B, 3 HR, 6 BB, 8 K
AAA:  271/346/493, 284 AB, 18 2B, 15 HR, 33 BB, 60 K

Goedert opened the season back on the disabled list with an oblique injury.  He eventually returned to AAA and hit well, but at that point he was 26.  He started playing some at first.  The Indians removed him from the 40-man roster during the season.

2012
AA:  395/476/613, 124 AB, 10 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 20 BB, 20 K
AAA:  279/331/460, 326 AB, 17 2B, 14 HR, 28 BB, 72 K, 0-1 SB

For some reason, the Indians sent Goedert back to AA, where he hammered the ball.  He spent the bulk of the season in AAA, playing first, third and the outfield corners.  He hit similarly to 2011, but not quite as well, with his plate discipline dropping off.

2013
AAA:  241/316/390, 464 AB, 32 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR, 51 BB, 110 K, 4-4 SB

Aside from Ivan De Jesus, Jr., none of the veterans the Pirates acquired to play in AAA hit well, and Goedert was no exception.  He got off to a slow start and never hit better than .261 in any month, which was as low as his worst full season’s average in any year since he reached AAA.  He hit six HRs in May, but no more than two in any other month.  (Oddly, Matt Hague also hit over half of his HRs in May.)  Goedert played third regularly all year.

Goedert will be a free agent in the fall and will probably move on.
