Pirates place Jakubauskas on DL, make flurry of roster moves

The Pirates placed pitcher Chris Jakubauskas on the disabled list this morning, after he was hit in the head by a Lance Berkman comebacker last night. Jakubauskas was released from the hospital after being diagnosed with a head contusion and concussion. The Pirates also optioned Daniel McCutchen to Triple-A, and called up Brian Burres and Brian Bass. To make room on the 40-man roster for Bass, minor league outfielder Brandon Jones was designated for assignment. Jeff Karstens also may be brought up from Triple-A to start on Tuesday. Karstens is not currently on the 40-man roster.

Pirates cut seven, roster almost set

The Pittsburgh Pirates cut seven players today, according to Rob Biertempfel.  Those players were Brian Bass, Vinnie Chulk, Jeff Karstens, Steven Jackson, Jeremy Powell, Anthony Claggett, and Luke Carlin.  The Spring Training tracker is updated with the cuts.  These cuts pretty much mean that the Pirates’ 25-man roster is almost set. Robinzon Diaz released, Jeff Karstens and Justin Thomas to AAA

Robinzon Diaz, Jeff Karstens, and Justin Thomas were all designated for assignment ten days ago, and all three cleared waivers today.  The Pittsburgh Pirates unconditionally released Diaz, while sending Karstens and Thomas to AAA, with invites to Spring Training. Diaz was apparently unhappy being behind Ryan Doumit and Jason Jaramillo on the depth chart, and would have opted for minor league free agency had he been sent to AAA....
