Joel Hanrahan and peripheral stats

When the Pirates acquired Joel Hanrahan from the Nationals, I immediately noticed the huge discrepancy between his peripherals and his unsightly 7.71 ERA. Hanrahan struck out 35 batters, walked 14, and allowed three home runs in his 32.2 inning with Washington this year. That comes out to a FIP of 3.60, more than four runs lower than his actual ERA. I immediately liked the acquisition, as it seemed obvious that Hanrahan’s absurd...

Pirates aren't out of the woods with Veal yet

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed 2009 Rule 5 draft pick Donald Veal on the 15-day DL today with a strained left index finger. To fill Veal’s spot, they purchased the contract of relief pitcher Chris Bootcheck, adding Bootcheck to the 40-man roster, which had an open spot. Pirates Notebook: The 2008 State College Spikes

2008 was not a good year for the State College Spikes. The short season team combined for a 18-56 record, a .243 winning percentage. The pitching staff put up a 5.40 ERA. Pirates Notebook: Post Trade Thoughts

I wrote on the Eric Hinske trade and the Nyjer Morgan/Sean Burnett trade earlier today. Check out those links for my thoughts on the deals. In the aftermath of the trades, I’ve got a few more thoughts, which I will provide in no specific order: Where are the left handers? Pirates trade Morgan/Burnett for Milledge/Hanrahan

I’ve written about this rumored deal twice now. When it was first rumored, I looked at the Milledge/Craig Stammen request from the Pirates end. Later I looked at the debate between talent and attitude that seems to split Pirates fans on the deal. Today the Pirates finally made the move, trading Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett to Washington for Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan. That debate is going to remain for Pirates fans now...
