Joel Hanrahan Injured

Some bad news coming out of Spring Training this morning as Joel Hanrahan is reported to be out with a right flexor-pronator strain, and will visit Dr. James Andrews next week, a visit that is never good.  Chuck Finder has the following quote from Hanrahan: “It’s something that I kind of battled with in August and Septemeber,” months where he permitted opponents to hit a .162 average and crafted a 0.42 ERA....

Going Cheap Pt 3: 2010 Bullpen Options

In part one of this series I looked at whether you could find cheap bullpen options.  In part two of this series I looked at how you could find cheap bullpen options.  While there are probably many ways to do this, the two trends I am focusing on here are as follows: 1. Pirates remove Bautista, Bootcheck, and Hansen from 40-man

Ascanio visits Dr. James Andrews, undergoes surgery

Bad news for the Pirates today, courtesy of Dr. James Andrews. Jose Ascanio, acquired in the Tom Gorzelanny/John Grabow trade, underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. The Pirates have not yet committed to a timetable for his return, but torn labrums are often the downfall of a pitcher’s career. When this trade was initially announced, I was skeptical. I didn’t like the inclusion of Gorzelanny, as I...
