Marauders Clinch Playoff Spot

On Friday night, all of the Pirates' minor league affiliates lost. On Saturday night, all but State College won....

Bradenton Marauders 4, Charlotte Stone Crabs 2 ... (box)

The Marauders assured themselves at least a spot in the playoffs with this win tonight. Nate Adcock won his 11th game of the season with 2 runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st, with a 2-out walk, a wild pitch, and two singles. He surrendered another run on a walk and a double to lead off the 3rd inning. He scattered 4 more hits, but left two stranded and erased two with double plays. In the top of the 6th, Adcock got two outs and gave up a single, then that runner stole both second and third base. He was relieved by Kyle McPherson, who finished that inning with a strikeout, then gave up just one hit over the next 2 innings, including 3 more strikeouts. Noah Krol earned his league-leading 34th save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning, working around a missed catch error.

Bradenton picked up one run in the 2nd inning, when C Eric Fryer singled, then moved to second base on a groundout. 3B Adam Davis' RBI single brought in Fryer. The Marauders were on the receiving end of several walks over the next few innings -- one in the 3rd to SS Shelby Ford, one in the 4th to Fryer, three in the 5th to DH Jordan Newton, 2B James Skelton, and RF Robbie Grossman to load the bases -- but all were left on base. They did score again in the 6th, when LF Quincy Latimore led off with a single. He was forced out at second on Fryer's grounder, leaving Fryer at first. Davis singled again, advancing Fryer to third bse, then Newton doubled in both Fryer and Davis, to take a 3-2 lead. They added an insurance run in the 4th. Grossman singled with one out, then scored on CF Starling Marte's double. The Marauders threatened again in the 8th, as Davis was hit by a pitch and Newton walked, then Skelton bunted them both into scoring position. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning, but it turned out to not matter, and the Marauders season is going to continue beyond the weekend.

Owens Wins #12, Two Homers For Hague As Curve Clinch Title

Tuesday's action for the Pirates' lower minor leaguers....

Altoona Curve 9, Bowie Baysox 1 .. (box)

The Altoona Curve clinched the Eastern League's Western Division title tonight with a win over Bowie. This is just the second time the Curve have won their division in their 12 years of existence, and it follows a 2009 when the Curve spent the season in the cellar.

Six different Curve batters had 2 hits in the game, and 1B Matt Hague's two hits were both home runs. The batters provided plenty of run support for starter Rudy Owens, who won his 12th game of the season. Owens pitched 6 scoreless innings, and struck out 9 Bowie batters. Owens allowing 2 singles in the 1st inning but kept the Baysox scoreless thanks to an on-target throw in from RF Miles Durham to C Hector Gimenez, to tag out the lead runner at the plate. Owens retired the next 11 batters in order, then gave up back-to-back singles in the 5th. A strikeout ended that inning -- he struck out 3 batters in the 5th, and two more in the 6th to finish up his night.

Derek Hankins earned his 7th save with 3 innings of work. He gave up a lead-off homer to the first batter he faced in the 7th inning, and that was Bowie's only run of the game. Hankins loaded the bases with three singles following the homer, but got out of the inning with a strikeout. He allowed only one more hit over the next two innings and struck out a total of 5 batters.

Meanwhile, the Curve batters were steadily stacking up the runs, scoring in 6 of their 9 at-bats. Bowie held them off in the 1st inning, despite loading the bases on singles by 3B Josh Harrison and SS Jordy Mercer, and a walk to DH Andrew Lambo. Two strikeouts strikeouts ended the inning without a run scoring. After that, the Curve took off. Durham singled and CF Anthony Norman tripled for one run in the 2nd inning (1). Hague was hit by a pitch, then singles by Gimenez and 2B Jim Negrych brought in 2 runs in the 3rd (3). Hague homered for the first time, a solo shot, in the 5th (4). Two more runs came in during the 6th. Norman walked, and LF Jose De Los Santos reached on a fielding error. Harrison doubled, plating Norman (5), and Mercer's ground out brought in De Los Santos (6). In the 7th, Negrych singled and scored on Norman's double (7). Hague homered again in the 8th inning, this time with Mercer on base with a single (9).

Three Curve position players have been named to participate in the Arizona Fall League: OF Andrew Lambo, INF Josh Harrison, and INF Jordy Mercer will be with the Mesa Solar Sox. Joining them will be C Tony Sanchez. (Each team is allowed one A-level player.) The Pirates are also allowed three pitchers, though those assignments have not yet been determined. The Arizona Fall League begins play in mid-October.

Curve Split Two, Owens Wins #11, Cain Wins #1

Lots of action for the Pirates' minor league affiliates on Thursday....

Richmond Flying Squirrels 9, Altoona Curve 6 (Game 1).. (box)

This was the wrap-up of a suspended game from... awhile back. 2B Jordy Mercer had 3 hits in the game with an RBI, and LF Jim Negrych had a single, a double, and an RBI for the Curve. The Curve scored first, with 3 runs in the bottom of hte 1st, on a double by 3B Shelby Ford, an RBI single by Mercer, walks to both C Kris Watts and LF Brandon Jones (back when he was still on the team), and a 2-RBI single by RF Miles Durham.

Richmond came back to tie the score with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, on four singles and a throwing error by 1B Matt Hague. Then they took the lead with another 3 runs in the top of the 3rd, on a walk and three doubles. Starter Tim Alderson was responsible for 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and a walk over 3 innings. Dustin Molleken took over for Alderson, and retired the side in the top of the 4th inning. The Curve began the bottom of the inning with a walk to Durham, a single by CF Anthony Norman, and a sacrifice bunt by Molleken, to put both runners into scoring position. That was when play was halted. When the game resumed, SS Chase d'Arnaud singled, scoring Durham. PH/3B Josh Harrison grounded to short, which let Norman score also. Mercer singled again, but was left on base. The Curve had closed the gap, 6-5

Derek Hankins took over for Molleken after the restart. He pitched 5 innings, scattering two hits and a walk over the first four of those innings. The Curve also put runners on base in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but did not score.

In the top of the 9th, Hankins gave up a single and an RBI double, then three more singles, increasing Richmond's lead to 9-5. The Curve got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 9th, when Hague walked, and moved to third on a fielding error that also put Watts on base. Jim Negrych singled into left field, bringing in Hague from third. Watts also tried to score, coming from second base, but he was out at the plate on the throw in from left field, ending the game.

Curve 5, Flying Squirrels 1 (Game 2).. (box)

The Curve turned the tables in the second game, which was scheduled for only 7 innings. Rudy Owens buzzed through 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits and one walk, while striking out 5 batters. He surrendered a single in the 2nd and a double in the 4th, then a walk in the 6th. It was Owens' 11th win of the season. Daniel Moskos wrapped things up in the 7th inning. He loaded the bases with two walks and a single. A grounder force out brought in Richmond's only run, but then Moskos ended the game with a strikeout.

2B Jordy Mercer's bat was still hot, as he collected another 2 hits. He and LF Jim Negrych both singled in the 4th, then C Hector Gimenez reached on a throwing error, which brought in Negrych with the first run of the game. A walk to 3B Josh Harrison and singles by 1B Matt Hague and Mercer scored Harrison with another run in the 5th. SS Chase d'Arnaud added three more runs with a 3-run homer in the 6th, also plating CF Anthony Norman, who had walked, and pinch-hitter Andrew Lambo, who had singled.

Watson Shines For Curve; Shut Out For Spikes’ Pitchers

Sunday in the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates... as usual for a Sunday, the GCL Pirates have a scheduled day off.

The Bradenton Marauders and the Fort Myer Miracle got just an inning and a half of baseball in before they had to stop. C Eric Fryer was the only Bradenton batter to reach base, with a double in the top of the 2nd. Marauders' starter Nate Adcock had retired the side in order in the bottom of the 1st. The suspended game will be resumed on Monday evening as part of a double header, weather permitting.

Altoona Curve 9, Binghamton Mets 5 (box)

Two big innings boosted the Curve over the Mets, as starter Tony Watson pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits, while striking out 8 Mets. Watson retired the first 9 batters he faced, then gave up a single and a walk in the 3rd. He set down the next 6 batters, then gave up a lone double in the 5th. Watson faced his biggest threat in the 6th,when he gave up a single and a double, putting two runners in scoring position. But Watson got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out to finish the inning.

C Hector Gimenez led the Curve bats with 3 hits and 3 RBI. He opened the scoring with a solo home run (his 16th of the season) in the 2nd inning. He singled again in the 4th inning but was left on base, then reached on a fielding error in the 5th inning rally, and doubled in the 7th inning rally.

The 5th inning began with a solo home run by CF Anthony Norman. Watson worked a walk, then singles by 2B Chase d'Arnaud and 3B Josh Harrison loaded the bases. A sharp line-out to third by LF Jim Negrych forced the base runners to freeze in place, but a grounder force out by 1B Matt Hague brought in Watson, with Harrison out at second base. SS Jordy Mercer's single plated d'Arnaud, and a fielding error on Gimenez's ball to center field brought in both Hague and Mercer. The Curve had a 6-0 lead.

They added 3 more runs in the 7th. With one out, Hague singled, and Mercer reached on an error. Gimenez's double brought in both of them, then after a single by RF Miles Durham, Gimenez scored on a sacrifice fly by Norman.

The Curve were leading 9-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, when Derek Hankins relieved Watson. Hankins gave up 2 runs on a double, two singles, and two wild pitches. He retired the side in the 8th, but gave up a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th. Hankins still earned his 6th save of the game, because he'd pitched 3 innings. Watson's win was his 5th of the season for the Curve.

7 Shutout Innings For Locke; Error-o-rama For Bradenton

A full day of action for the Pirates' minor league affiliates on Wednesday

Altoona Curve 1, Portland Sea Dogs 0 (box)

Jeff Locke pitched 7 shut-out innings and struck out 8 batters to earn his 2nd win with the Curve. Locke scattered 3 hits and one walk in those 7 innings. All three of the hits were doubles. Two of the runners were left on base, and the other was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. Locke never had more than one base runner on at a time. Mike Dubee completed the shutout with 2 perfect innings in relief, including two strikeouts.

The Curve batters were not hitting a lot either, but they were the ones who put together a series of hits to score a run. In the 8th, C Hector Gimenez doubled, and DH Yung Chi Chen and CF Anthony Norman followed with back-to-back singles. Norman's single drove in Gimenez with the only run of the game. The only other hits the Curve posted were back-to-back singles by LF Jim Negrych and 1B Matt Hague in the first inning. Both were left on base. After those two hits, the next 20 Curve batters were retired in order, until the 3 hits in the 8th.

I’m Still Awake — And So Are The Curve!

Friday's action with the Pirates' lower minor leaguers... The GCL Pirates and the GCL Tigers barely got started this afternoon before their game had to be suspended. Starter Bryton Trepagnier pitched 2 innings and allowed a run on one hit in the 1st. The Pirates had had 6 batters go down in order when play was halted.

Only a few more days left until the deadline for signing draftees... take a look HERE to see which draft picks the Pirates have signed. The newest signee is OF Dan Grovatt, the 11th round pick, from University of Virginia.

Reliever Daniel Moskos has been returned to Altoona from the Indy Indians. He'd been struggling with the Indians, with a 0-5 record, one save, and a 10.38 ERA in 19 appearances. In his last appearance, on Monday, Moskos walked the bases loaded in his one inning of work, though a line drive out got him out of trouble.

Pitcher Travis Chick, who had been assigned to Altoona last week, was traded to the Texas Rangers; they assigned him to AA Frisco.

Altoona Curve 4, New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3 (19 innings -- yes, 19) (box)

The Curve and the Fisher Cats played for 19 innings, and 5 hours and 49 minutes, finally finishing up at 12:50 am, when RF Miles Durham blasted a home run to break a 13.5 inning tie.

It all started innocently. New Hampshire scored first on a single, an RBI double, and a controversial 2-run homer in the 3rd. The ball sailed over the left field wall... or did it? It was ruled a homer, and the Curve protested, but the ruling stood. Much later in the game, the word came in from some fans who were out there -- the ball had indeed cleared the left field wall by about 8 inches, then hit a secondary wall behind the first one.

The Curve got two runs back in the 4th. 2B Jordy Mercer led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, then on to third when Miles Durham singled. A fielder's choice by SS Yung Chi Chen brought in Mercer, and a single by DH Jim Negrych brought in Durham. Mercer picked up the RBI in the 5th to tie the score. LF Andrew Lambo walked, 1B Matt Hague singled, and they advanced to second and third bases on a missed catch error. Mercer's ground out brought Lambo in from third.

That 3-3 tie lasted.... until Saturday. Bryan Morris pitched the first 4 innings and allowed the 3 runs in the 3rd, on a total of 4 hits, no walks, with 3 strikeouts. Mike Colla pitched 2 scoreless innings, with 3 hits. Derek Hankins threw 3 innings, allowing only a walk. Mike Dubee contributed 3 more scoreless innings, with one hit. Anthony Claggett also took 3 innings, and gave up 2 walks. Tom Boleska pitched 4 innings, because by then, only Daniel Moskos was left, and someone had to be saved for Saturday's (evening) game. Boleska managed to keep going, even when he was smacked with a come-backer. He gave up 2 hits, but struck out 3 batters, and still didn't allow a run. Boleska got the win, since he was the pitcher of record when Durham homered.

The Curve batters had more hits in all those innings, but they still were putting up donuts. The Curve had two runners on base in the 14th -- single by 3B Josh Harrison and an intentional walk to Hague. They loaded the bases in the 16th, when Harrison walked, Lambo singled, and Hague was intentionally walked again, but Mercer struck out, and it kept going. Harrison singled in the 18th, and stole second base, then Lambo walked again, but they still couldn't get a run across. Finally in the top of the 19th, after C Hector Gimenez flied out, Durham sent everyone home with his homer over the left-center field wall. The Curve had to cancel the schedule fireworks show, because county regulations forbid fireworks after midnight. They did not cancel the opportunity for the kids to run the bases ... at 1 am, there were kids, up way beyond their bedtime, running the bases at Blair County Ballpark.

Farrell Returns To Marauders

Monday's action in the Pirates' lower minor leagues... The Altoona Curve had a scheduled day off.

Palm Beach Cardinals 6, Bradenton Marauders 5 (box)

The Marauders wanted to celebrate the return of 3B Jeremy Farrell with a big win, but a 3-run 7th inning by the Cardinals spoiled their plans. Farrell finished his rehab stint with the GCL Pirates and returned to the Marauders' line-up for the first time since he injured his knee on a foul ball in mid-June. Farrell got right back at it, doubling in a run in the 5th, and scoring in the Marauders' 4th inning rally.

Bradenton was the first to have the lead in the game, when they scored a run in the 2nd. LF Quincy Latimore was hit by a pitch, moved to second base on Farrell's groundout, and scored on C Eric Fryer's RBI single. The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run, then followed the homer with back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 lead.

The Marauders responded with 2 runs in the top of the 4th. Latimore again got the rally started, this time with a walk. Farrell grounded to short, but was safe when the Cardinals' second baseman missed the catch on the flip from his shortstop. Instead of what might have been a double play, the Marauders had runners on first and second bases with no outs. A fly out let Latimore tag up and move to third base. Fryer knocked another RBI single, scoring Latimore, and DH Jordan Newton RBI single brought in Farrell.

RF Robbie Grossman teamed up with Farrell to make it 4-2 in the 5th, when Grossman singled, and scored on Farrell's double. The Marauders picked up another run in the 6th, when 2B Adam Davis singled, then advanced to third base on a throwing error. He scored on another RBI single by Newton. Palm Beach got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 6th, on two walks and a single.

Nate Baker made the start for the Marauders, going 5 innings and allowing the 2 runs in the 3rd, on a total of 6 hits, no walks, and 3 RBI. Yerfi Taveras, in his debut with the Marauders, gave up the run on two walks and a single in the 6th, but also struck out a batter and induced an inning-ending double play.

Tyler Cox took over for Taveras to begin the 7th, and he was charged with both the Blown Save and the loss. He gave up a walk and a single, then a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. A fielding error by SS Shelby Ford allowed 2 runs to score (one earned, one not) and a throwing error by Farrell allowed the third run to come in (also unearned). Duke Welker retired the side in order in the 8th, and the Marauders went down in order in both the 8th and 9th.

Six Scoreless Innings For Watson and Von Rosenberg

Thursday's action with the Pirates' minor league affiliates....

Altoona Curve 6, Akron Aeros 1 (box)

Starter Tony Watson dominated the Aeros with 6 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits, no walks, while striking out 3 batters. Watson retired the first 13 batters he faced, before allowing a single with one out in the 5th. The second hit, also a single, also came in the 5th, but both runners were left on base. After retiring the side in order, with 2 strikeouts, in the 6th, Watson was relieved by Ramon Aguero.

The Curve also went down in order in the first three innings. With one out in the 4th, 3B Josh Harrison was hit by a pitch, then stole second and third bases. He scored on 1B Matt Hague's single. SS Jordy Mercer reached on a throwing error by the Aeros pitcher. C Hector Gimenez singled, driving in Hague. A balk moved Mercer up to third base and Gimenez to second, then RF Miles Durham walked to load the bases. DH Yung Chi Chen's line drive into left field plated both Mercer and Gimenez to give the Curve a 4-0 lead.

Aguero gave up 2 singles in the 7th but kept the Aeros from scoring. Then in the 8th, two singles were combined with a walk, to bring in a run. Anthony Claggett pitched the 9th inning, and gave up a walk and a single, but left the runners stranded.

2B Chase d'Arnaud singled and stole second base (his 23rd of the season) in the 5th, then he doubled in the 7th. The Curve added two runs in the 8th. LF Andrew Lambo led off with a single and Hague walked. Mercer dropped down a sacrifice bunt toward third base, and a throwing error by the Aeros' third baseman allowed Lambo to score, and put Curve runners on first and third. After two outs, Chen again brought in a run when Hague scored on his RBI single.

Altoona Gets Paid Back; Alderson’s Unhappy Bradenton Return; Rojas’ Debut

As usual on Sunday, the GCL Pirates were off. Everyone else played games scattered through the afternoon and evening.

Harrisburg Senators 13, Altoona Curve 4 (box)

Paybacks are... well, you know, and today the Senators got revenge for the Curve having scored 10 runs in the 9th last night. Harrisburg sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the 8th and scored 8 runs, to give them a total of 13 runs in the game.

Justin Wilson made the start for the Curve, and pitched 6 innings. He did well for the first 5 of those innings, allowing only one run, on a walk, a single, and a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning. Wilson allowed only a walk and a single over the next three innings. In the 6th, Wilson gave up back-to-back singles to open the inning, then a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly brought in one run. A walk and a single drove in a second run. Wilson allowed 8 hits and 3 walks, and struck out 5 batters.

The Curve scored one run in the 3rd inning, when RF Miles Durham reached base on a fielding error, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Wilson, and scored on SS Chase d'Arnaud's double. 1B Matt Hague added a solo home run in the 4th, to briefly give the Curve a 2-1 lead.

After the Senators took a 3-2 lead in the 6th, Corey Hamman, just returned to the Curve after a stint with AAA Indianapolis, took the mound for the 7th inning. It was Hamman's first game action in nearly three weeks, so it wasn't a big surprise when Hamman gave up a lead-off single followed by a 2-run homer, to give Harrisburg a 5-2 lead.

Then the wheels fell off in the 8th inning. Hamman gave up two singles, two walks, another single (with a fielding error), then got a fielding error. Three runs had come in at that point, and after another walk to load the bases (again), Hamman was relieved by Dustin Molleken. Molleken got a strikeout, then gave up two singles and a double, driving in 5 more runs (3 of which were charged to Hamman), before he struck out the 12th batter of the inning to end the bleeding.

The Curve made a valiant effort in the top of the 9th. Matt Hague walked, and 3B Jordy Mercer singled. A wild pitch moved both up one base, so that Hague scored on LF Brandon Jones' single. Durham bounced back to the mound, and the Senators traded another run for two outs in a double play, as Mercer scored. A fly out ended the game, with the Curve not even close to catching up.

Other Curve news: The Pirates and Curve have suspended reliever Diego Moreno for a period of "5 to 7 days" for unprofessional behavior. The problem occurred while in Altoona on the Curve's most recent home stand. Pirates' farm director Kyle Stark also hinted that it's possible that Moreno will be returned to the Bradenton Marauders after his suspension. Moreno had a 3-0 record and a 1.37 ERA in 16 appearances for Bradenton, with 39 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. Since being promoted to Altoona and working around a month on the DL, Moreno has made 7 appearances for the Curve, but has allowed 6 runs on 10 hits in 7.2 innings, with 12 strikeouts.

Bixler Returns; Krol Saves #21

IMG_3495The Pittsburgh Pirates have reaquired infielder Brian Bixler (photo) from the Cleveland Indians' organization. Bixler, who was originally drafted by the Pirates in the second round of the 2004 draft, played in the Pirates' organization for all of his career until he was traded to Cleveland in January 2010 for infielder Jesus Brito. Bixler did not make the Cleveland major league team out of spring training, and he was removed from their 40-man roster. He has been playing for AAA Columbus, and has appeared in several games against the Indy Indians. For the Clippers, the 27-year-old Ohio native has been hitting .278 with 13 doubles, one triple, 3 homers, and 27 RBI. That's about the same average but with a little less power than he showed with the Indy Indians in 2009. Bixler has not been able to take his AAA level success up to the major league level. In a total of 68 games with the Pirates, Bixler hit .178 with 7 doubles, one triple, and 5 RBI, and struck out 62 times. Bixler will join the Indy Indians after the All-Star break.

The Indy Indians are off for their All-Star break. The AAA All-Star game will be played on Wednesday in Lehigh Valley. The game will not be on ESPN2 as in past years, but will be televised on the MLB network. It will also be on-line on milb.com. More Monday action in the Pirates' minor league organization:

Richmond Flying Squirrels 6, Altoona Curve 3..... suspended (box)

They got into the 4th inning before rain halted play in Altoona this afternoon. The Curve got busy in the bottom of the 1st, with a double by 3B Shelby Ford, and an RBI single by 2B Jordy Mercer. Mercer stole second, then went to third on walks to C Kris Watts and LF Brandon Jones. RF Miles Durham drove in both Mercer and Watts with a line drive single into left field. Durham also stole second, but was left there when the inning ended.

Starter Tim Alderson retired the side in the top of the 1st, but struggled after that. The Squirrels came right back in the top of the 2nd to tie the score. The inning began with three consecutive singles, which brought in one run. A throwing error by 1B Matt Hague loaded the bases, and another single drove in two more runs. A sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position -- and provided the first out of the inning. A hit batter loaded the bases again, but an infield fly rule pop out and a grounder force out ended the inning. The second inning did not go any better. A double, a walk, and a double opened the inning, bringing in 2 runs. After two ground outs, another double drove in the Squirrels' 6th run. Alderson was relieved by Dustin Molleken to begin the top of the 4th, and Molleken retired the side in order.

The Curve went down in order in the 2nd. Mercer and Watts both singled in the 3rd, though neither scored. The bottom of the 4th began with a walk to Durham and a single by CF Anthony Norman, moving Durham to third. Molleken's sacrifice bunt moved Norman to second base, and that's how things stood when play was halted. The game will be resumed on August 26th.

After the game, Alderson was reassigned to A+ Bradenton. He had made 17 starts for the Curve, and in 86.2 innings, Alderson had allowed 105 hits and 54 earned runs (5.30 ERA). He had 26 walks and 57 strikeouts, and batters hit .307 against him. His record: 7-5.

Jeff Locke is being promoted from Bradenton to Altoona -- a pitcher swap. Locke has a 9-3 record with the Marauders. He also has 17 starts, for 86.1 innings, allowing 82 hits and 42 earned runs (3.54 ERA). Locke has walked 14 and struck out 83, and batters hit .248 against him.

Duke Pitches Well In 2nd Rehab Start; 3 Rehab Hits For Friday

Saturday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates:

Altoona Curve 2, Richmond Flying Squirrels 1 (box)

Zach Duke pitched 4 rehab innings, allowing only one run on two hits and a walk. Double plays got Duke out of the 1st inning, when a runner reached on Duke's fielding error, and out of the 2nd, when he walked a batter. He retired the side in order in the 3rd, then with two outs in the 4th gave up a solo home run followed by a single before ending the inning. Duke did not strike out any batters.

The Curve gave Duke 2 runs worth of support in the bottom of the 1st. CF Anthony Norman led off with a single, and two outs later, 1B Matt Hague blasted his 8th home run of the season for a 2-0 lead. Three innings later, the Squirrels homered off Duke, and that was all the scoring in the game. The Curve had only two other hits in the game -- a single by 2B Jordy Mercer immediately following Hague's homer, and a double by Hague to lead off the 4th. After Hague's double, the next 15 Curve batters went down in order.

Not that the Squirrels were doing much better. After the homer and the single in the 4th, Richmond posted only two more hits. Those came back-to-back to open the 8th inning off reliever Anthony Claggett. Claggett struck out the next two batters and got a line out to end the inning without a run scoring. Tony Watson pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing only one walk, and he was credited with the win. Ramon Aguero earned his second save with a perfect 9th inning.

Don't forget to watch Gorkys Hernandez and Bryan Morris in the Futures Game on Sunday at 6pm (Eastern) on ESPN2 and MLB.TV. Hernandez will be the starting center fielder for the World Team. Tony Sanchez was invited too, but he's still on the DL due to jaw surgery.

Loss For Owens, Win for McSwain

The State College Spikes have a scheduled day off today, and the GCL Pirates were washed out again.

Binghamton Mets 9, Altoona Curve 6 (box)

Three runs in the top of the 10th broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Mets the extra-inning win. Ramon Aguero took the mound for the Curve to begin the inning, and he began by giving up a single. The next batter dropped down a bunt, but C Kris Watts grabbed it fast enough to make the force out at second base, leaving a runner on first. Aguero walked the next batter, then gave up a double that brought in both runners. Moments later, another double drove in the third run of the inning.

Watts led off the bottom of the 10th with a double, and SS Chase d'Arnaud walked, but two ground outs ended the inning before either of them could score, and the Mets had the win.

Curve starter Rudy Owens could not get through the 5th inning tonight, as he gave up 5 runs on 13 hits, though he also struck out 6 batters. The Mets got going right away in the top of the 1st, on two doubles and three singles, scoring 3 runs off Owens. A double play got Owens out of a jam in the 2nd inning, after he'd given up another double and single pair. Back-to-back doubles brought in a run for the Mets in the 3rd inning. Owens did retire the side in order in the 4th, but got right back into trouble in the 5th. A lead-off home run, followed by a strikeout and 3 consecutive singles to load the bases, and that was all for Owens. Dustin Molleken came on in relief and left the bases loaded when he struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Curve began their comeback in the bottom of the inning. They had put at least one runner on base in each of the first 4 innings, but could not get any of them around to score. With one out in the bottom of the 5th, CF Gorkys Hernandez and 3B Josh Harrison hit back-to-back singles, with Hernandez going to third on Harrison's hit. 1B Hector Gimenez's sacrifice fly brought in Hernandez. Three consecutive singles by 2B Jordy Mercer, LF Brandon Jones, and RF Miles Durham brought in two more runs, and the Curve had come within 2 runs of the Mets.

Dustin Molleken reached base on a throwing error to begin the 6th inning. He moved to second base on Chase d'Arnaud's single and then to third on Hernandez's ground out. Josh Harrison's sacrifice fly brought Molleken in to score, and the Curve crept closer. They took the lead in the bottom of the 8th. Kris Watts led off with a single, and he was bunted to second by LF Anthony Norman, who entered the game in a double-switch. D'Arnaud walked, and a ground out by Hernandez moved both runners into scoring position. Harrison obliged with a single lined into center field, scoring both Watts and d'Arnaud, to give the Curve a 6-5 lead.

Binghamton tied the score again in the top of the 9th, on back-to-back doubles off reliever Diego Moreno. That took the game into extra innings, when the Mets got the win.

The two teams combined for 33 hits in the game -- 19 for the Mets and 14 for the Curve. Gorkys Hernandez, Josh Harrison, and Kris Watts had 3 hits each.

Curve starter Bryan Morris has been selected to play in the Futures' Game on the US team. He will be facing teammate Gorkys Hernandez, who will be on the World team. Bradenton's Tony Sanchez was also named to the US team, but will have to miss the game due to his fractured jaw.
