2011 Prospect Watching: Skirving, Emsley-Pai, Scott

Continuing to work our way up through the catchers in the Pirates' minor league organization

Matt Skirving --  Bats Left / Throws Right;  6' 2",  215 lbs
Skirving was the Pirates' 30th round pick in the 2010 draft.  He reported to State College, where he played in 43 games, all but one behind the plate.  Skirving had a great month of July at the plate, when he hit .306, but that dropped sharply to .103 in August, and he finished the season with just one hit in his last 10 games.  Overall for the season, Skirving hit .217, with 7 doubles, a triple, and 10 RBI.  His strikeouts and walks were ok -- 21 strikeouts (17.5%) and 12 walks (8.8%).  Skirving threw out 14 out of 76 base runners (18%).  He's got a lot to work on, but he's 21 years old and has some time.  Skirving will likely be ready for West Virginia in 2011.

Kawika Emsley-Pai --  Bats Both / Throws Right;  5' 11",  195 lbs
Emsley-Pai was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 10th round of the 2010 draft.  He went right to Yakima in the Northwest League (Low A).  He did not hit well there -- .167 with 3 doubles and 8 RBI in 42 games.  He did do a little better in August, when he hit .212.  Emsley-Pai reportedly has an accurate arm (he pitched in high school) and he did throw out 19 of 36 base stealers for Yakima (53%).  It wasn't good enough for the D'backs, though, who released him after the 2010 season.  Emsley-Pai has a connection to the Pirates -- the scout who signed him for the D'backs, Jim Dedrick, is now working for the Pirates.  Dedrick probably put in a good word for him, and the Pirates signed Emsley-Pai to a minor league contract.  His 2011 assignment might depend on where Elias Diaz goes.  It's likely that one of them will go to State College and share duties with Schoenfeld, and the other will go to West Virginia and share with Skirving.

Travis Scott  --  Bats Left / Throws Right;  6' 3",  220 lbs
The Pirates picked up Scott in the minor league part of the Rule 5 Draft in December.  He had been the Mariners' 20th round pick in the 2005 draft, but had not moved up far in their organization.  He spent all of the 2007 -09 seasons at A+ High Desert, and after another 33 games at High Desert in 2010, he was given a brief shot at AA West Tennessee.  In 4 games at West Tennesseee, Scott went 1-for-11, then was released.  He hit .276 overall in all that time with High Desert, with 45 homers and 201 RBI, and his best year at the plate was 2009, when he hit .285 with 15 homers and 71 RBI.  After being released by Seattle, Scott joined Rockford in the independent Northern League, where he played 65 games and hit .300 with 5 homers and 29 RBI.  Scott was going to be back in affiliated ball in 2011 on a minor league contract with the Angels, when he was selected in the Rule 5 Draft.  He could fit in as a back-up at either A+ Bradenton or maybe AA Altoona.

Losses All Around

Losses for all of the Pirates' affiliates on Friday night:

Reading Phillies 9, Altoona Curve 4 ... (box)

The R-Phils attacked Curve starter Jared Hughes early, and the Curve bats could not keep up. Hughes retired the side in order in the 1st inning, but gave up 3 unearned runs on a walk, a single, and two errors in the 2nd inning -- the throwing error was by Hughes. A walk, a double, and a single added 2 more runs in the 3rd inning. In the 4th inning, Hughes gave up another 3 runs on two singles, a triple, and a double by former Indy Indian Tagg Bozied. Hughes was done after those 4 innings, having allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks, though he struck out 6 batters.

The Curve hitters were hitless in the first 4 innings. The only batter to get on base was CF Anthony Norman, who reached in the 3rd on Bozied's fielding error at first. Two home runs, one by C Kris Watts in the 5th, and one by 2B Chase d'Arnaud in the 6th, got the Indians onto the scoreboard, but they were still trailing 8-2.

Each team scored in the 7th. Tom Boleska had relieved Hughes to begin the 5th inning, and he retired the first 7 batters he faced in order. Then in the 7th, he walked Bozied, then gave up a single and a double, allowing Bozied to score. In the bottom of the frame, 1B Matt Hague led off with a single, then scored on singles by Watts and Norman, to make it 9-3. The Curve added one more run in the bottom of the 9th, when SS Jordy Mercer, Hague, and RF Miles Durham led off the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases. Watts' sacrifice fly plated Mercer, but two ground outs ended the inning without any further scoring. Bryan Morris pitched two perfect innings to wrap it up for the Curve.

The Curve have won the Eastern League's Western Division title, and will begin the first round of playoffs on Wednesday. None of the other playoff slots have been settled yet. The Bowie Baysox and the Harrisburg Senators are tied for second place in the Western Division. The Trenton Thunder are in first place in the Eastern Division, with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2.5 games behind, with 3 games left to play.

Gonzalezes Power Up With Homers

The West Virginia Power had their last late-morning game of the season today. The rest of the Pirates' lower minor affiliates play this evening.

West Virginia Power 12, Rome Braves 4 ... (box)

The Power hammered away at the Braves, scoring in every inning after the 1st, doubling up the Braves in hits. Jarek Cunningham and LF Rogelios Noris led the way with 3 hits each. 2B Rome got off to a good start with a solo home run to begin the 2nd inning. The Power came right back in the bottom of the inning, when 1B Aaron Baker walked and scored on RF Jose Hernandez's double off the right field wall. A ground out pushed Hernandez to third base, and he scored on Noris' line drive single inot left field. 3B Elevys Gonzalez added another run with a lead-off homer on the first pitch of the 3rd inning (his 4th of the season). Noris crushed a ball off the top of the left field wall with one out in the 4th inning, cruising into third base for a stand-up triple. He scored moments later on SS Benji Gonzalez's first home run of the season.

Power starter Brett Lorin had allowed that homer in the 2nd, and gave up singles in the 1st and 3rd, plus two walks in the 4th. The Braves got to him in the top of the 5th, though. With two outs, Lorin hit a batter, then gave up a double and a 3-run homer. That brought Rome within one run of the Power, 5-4. But that was all the scoring the Power pitchers intended to let the Braves do. Maurice Bankston relieved Lorin to pitch 2 scoreless innings, allowing only a single in the 7th. Jhonathan Ramos, just promoted from State College, celebrated his return to the Power with two perfect innings, including 3 strikeouts.

The Power added some insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Jarek Cunningham led off with a single, and he advanced to second base on a wild pitch. CF Evan Chambers walked, then when the Braves changed pitchers, Cunningham and Chambers greeted the new hurler by pulling off a double steal. Hernandez lined a single into right field, scoring Cunningham, and C Ramon Cabrera's sacrifice fly brought in Chambers. Noris lined into center field, and when Hernandez tried to make it to third base, the throw in from the outfield got past the Rome third baseman. Hernandez scrambled for the plate, but the third baseman recovered the ball quickly, and Hernandez was out at the plate. Noris was credited with only a single on the play, and the Power had a 7-4 lead.

Three more runs scored in the 6th. Benji Gonzalez singled and stole second base, and Cunningham tripled off the center field wall to bring him in. Chambers walked and also stole second base, then Baker doubled, plating both Cunningham and Chambers. DH Andy Vasquez added a solo home run in the 7th inning. Then the Power loaded the bases in the 8th on a walk to Cunningham, Chambers being hit by a pitch, and a single by Baker. A sacrifice fly by Hernandez brought Cunningham across the plate for the Power's 12th run of the game.

The South Atlantic League announced their post-season All-Star Team today, but no Power players were named to the team.

Mercer Gets 4 Hits And Walk-Off; Cunningham Homers In The 12th

Less action than planned on Tuesday for the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates, mostly due to rain in the Bradenton area. The Marauders' game against the St. Lucie Mets was postponed. They will try for two tomorrow. Yesterday's game between the Fort Myer Miracle and the Marauders was also rained out, as well as the game that they tried to start on Sunday (but only got into the second inning). Those games will not be made up. The GCL Braves at GCL Pirates games were washed out yesterday. They tried to play two today, but only got one of the games in.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Pirates 1 .. (box)

Each team had 6 hits this afternoon, but the one that counted was the Braves' walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 7th. The Pirates began the scoring with a run in the 3rd inning. SS Kevin Mort led off with a double, then advanced to third base on DH Justin Howard's single into right field. The two pulled off a double steal, with Mort scoring on the steal of home. The Braves tied the score in the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run.

The Pirates loaded the bases in the 5th, on singles by Howard and CF Junior Sosa, and a walk by 2B Jorge Bishop. A strikeout ended that threat. Sosa also singled in the 1st inning and stole second base. LF Exicardo Cayonez also singled in the 4th, but was thrown out trying to steal second. 1B Jared Lakind made his pro debut, but went 0-for-3 at the plate.

Joely Rodriguez pitched 5 innings in his start, and scattered 3 hits, no walks. One of those hits was the solo homer in the 4th. Ryan Hafner also made his pro debut, pitching the 6th inning. He gave up a lead-off single in the 6th, then got a grounder force out and struck out the next two batters to end the inning and continue the tie. Hafner began the 7th inning with a single and a walk. Fraylin Campos relieved Hafner, but he hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. That set up Braves' 3B Brandon Drury for the game-winning grand slam.

Gonzalez’s Walk-Off Homer, Krol’s 30th Save

A busy Friday for the Pirates' minor league affiliates:

Bradenton Marauders 5, Jupiter Hammerheads 3 (box)

The Marauders posted 14 hits, with each member of the line-up collecting at least one. C Eric Fryer had a perfect 4-for-4 night, with all four hits singles. SS Greg Picart had 2 singles, and LF Quincy Latimore doubled and homered. They scored only 5 runs on those 14 hits, though, leaving 13 runners on base.

Bradenton began scoring in the 2nd inning, on Fryer's first single and an RBI double by 1B Calvin Anderson. Latimore's double and a single by DH Jeremy Farrell to score Latimore added another run in the 3rd. Latimore's home run over the left field wall made it 3-0 in the 5th inning. The Marauders took advantage of an error by the Hammerheads to score agin in the 6th. With one out, Greg Picart singled and 2B Shelby Ford reached on a fielding error in left field, which let the speedy Picart score from first base. Ford went to third base on the error, and he scored on RF Robbie Grossman's RBI single.

Nate Baker earned his 2nd win with the Marauders, going 6 shutout innings and allowing only 2 hits, with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Three of those walks came in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Baker got out of that bases-loaded jam with a pop out and two fly outs. He had two more runners in scoring position in the 2nd, with a walk and a double, but got out of that jam too. The other single he allowed came with two outs in the 3rd. After that single, Baker retired the next 10 batters he faced, to finish his night.

Craig Hansen came on in relief of Baker to begin the 7th. He kept Jupiter from scoring in the 7th, despite two runners in scoring position from a hit batter, a single, and a wild pitch. The Hammerheads' only runs came in the 8th, and only one of the three runs was earned. A double and two walks loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly brought in the earned run. After a second out, Hansen was relieved by Duke Welker. The first batter Welker faced took a ball into center field, but an error by CF Starling Marte caused two unearned runs to score. Welker finished that inning with a line out to short.

Noah Krol earned his 30th save of the season with a perfect 9th inning. He leads the Florida State League in saves -- #2 has 28 saves and #3 has 21 saves. How many saves do you need to have before you get promoted?

Spikes Throw One-Hitter; Wilson K’s 11

Saturday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates... The West Virginia Power and Lexington Legends were rained out tonight. They will go for two tomorrow.

State College 1, Aberdeen IronBirds 0 (box)

Pitchers Tyler Waldron, Ryan Beckman, and Brooks Pounders combined to one-hit the IronBirds tonight. Waldron made the start with 5 nearly-perfect innings. The first IronBirds batter of the game was the only one to reach base against Waldron, and he got on when C Matthew Skirving dropped strike three, then made a throwing error when he fired the ball down to first base. Waldron immediately erased that base runner in a double play, then retired all the rest of the batters he faced, including one more strikeout.

Beckman took the 6th inning, and he also retired the side in order. Pounders pitched the final three innings. He gave up back to back walks with one out in the 7th, but left both runners stranded. Pounders also retired the side in order in the 8th. The no-hitter was lost in the 9th, when the first batter of the inning doubled into right field. Pounders retired the next three batters in order, leaving the runner on second base. Waldron earned his 3rd win of the season, and Pounders earned his first save.

The Spikes batters collected 6 hits and 4 walks, but fell victim to double plays and outfield assists, so they scored only one run. In the 2nd inning, 1B Matt Curry walked, but was erased in a double play, and LF Pat Irvine singled, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Curry walked again in the 4th, but was caught stealing. SS Gift Ngoepe singled in the 9th, but was thrown out trying for two bases. The lone Spikes' run came in the 6th inning. With one out, CF Mel Rojas worked a walk, then DH Gerlis Rodriguez drove a triple into center field, scoring Rojas. Curry walked for the third time in the game in the 9th, and RF Cole White singled, but both were left on base. White was the only Spikes' batter to have two hits. 2B Kelson Brown also singled.

Spikes Come From Behind; Morris Wins #5 With Curve

Not a lot of action for the lower minor league affiliates today. The West Virginia Power and the GCL Pirates had a scheduled day off, and the Bradenton Marauders were rained out -- they will play two games on Monday.

State College Spikes 7, Auburn Doubledays 6 (box)

SS Walker Gourley and LF Pat Irvine led the Spikes with 3 hits each as they came from behind to erase a 6-run lead. It was the largest deficit overcome for a win in the team's history.

Zack Dodson pitched 4 innings and gave up 6 runs (5 earned) to give Auburn the early lead. A triple, a single, and a 3-run homer gave Auburn a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Dodson retired the side in order in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, but got into trouble again in the 4th. A double, a throwing error by 3B Andy Vasquez, a single, and a wild pitch brought in one run. A passed ball and another single added two more runs, and Auburn had a 6-0 lead.

The Spikes had runners on base in 5 of the first 7 innings, but were not able to push any of their base runners around to score. They had the bases loaded with one out in the 5th, on a single by Vasquez, a walk to CF Mel Rojas, and a single through the hole into right field by Gourley. A strikeout and a grounder force out ended the inning without a run scoring.

Then the Spikes got going in the 8th. RF Adalberto Santos led off with a triple, and 1B Matt Curry walked. Pat Irvine singled, scoring Santos. Curry had moved to second base on a wild pitch, then on to third on Irvine's single, and he and Irvine both scored when DH Chase Lyles smashed the second triple of the inning. C Matt Skirving doubled, bringing in Lyles, and Andy Vasquez brought in Skirving with a sacrifice fly. The Spikes had moved to within one run of Auburn, 6-5.

Walker Gourley started the 9th inning rally with a bunt single. In a strange play, Santos grounded up the middle and was safe at first base, but Gourley, who tried to reach third base on the play, was ruled out because he'd missed touching second base as he was running. Spikes' manager Gary Robinson argued, but to no avail, and he was ejected for his efforts. Santos advanced to second base on a balk, and he scored the tying run when Irvine doubled into center field.

Sandobal Septimo had pitched one scoreless inning, and Trent Stevenson gave the Spikes 3 more scoreless frames. Jhonatan Ramos came on to pitch a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th, sending the game into extra innings. With one out in the top of the 10th, Vasquez dropped down a bunt and beat it out to first base. A wild pitch moved him to second base, and both Rojas and Gourley walked, loading the bases. Santos popped up, and was called out on the infield fly rule, but Matt Curry was the hero, with a single to short that allowed Vasquez to score the go-ahead run. Ramos kept the Doubledays from scoring in the bottom of the inning, and the Spikes had their come-from-behind win.

Big First Inning For Curve; Power Win In Extras

Two early games on Wednesday, plus a few more in the evening:

Altoona Curve 6, Erie SeaWolves 3 (box)

The Curve and the SeaWolves played early and scored early this afternoon. All the scoring was done by the middle of the 3rd inning. The Curve began the game with 4 runs in the top of the 1st. SS Chase d'Arnaud went 3-for-4 in the game, and he opened the game by beating out an infield single to short. He then stole his 19th and 20th bases of the season, then scored from third on 2B Jordy Mercer's sacrifice fly. 1B Matt Hague followed with a solo home run over the left-center field wall. C Hector Gimenez, who had missed a few games due to illness, walked after the homer, and he scored when RF Miles Durham hit the second home run of the inning over the left field wall.

Erie came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring 2 runs after 2 outs had been recorded. After a hit batter and a walk, a grounder to third should have been the end of the inning, but a throwing error by 3B Jose De Los Santos resulted in two runs scoring.

Erie did more 2-out scoring in the 2nd inning, and it was even more costly for the Curve. OF Gorkys Hernandez is already out for the rest of the season with a broken right ring finger, and now another key player, 2B Jordy Mercer, had to be removed from the game after being injured on a play. With two outs in the 2nd, a pop up into short left field was "deflected" by Mercer, and fell in for a double as Mercer had to leave the game. Much defensive shuffling ensued -- De Los Santos moved to second base, Josh Harrison came in to play third base, Brandon Jones moved from DH to right field, Miles Durham moved to center field, Anthony Norman came out of the game, and pitcher Justin Wilson had to move into the batting order with no more DH. After all the rearranging, Erie got two back-to-back singles, scoring a run.

The Curve were still up by one run, but they added some insurance in the top of the 3rd. Matt Hague doubled and Hector Gimenez singled then stole second base, giving the Curve two runners in scoring position. Miles Durham's sacrifice fly plated Hague, then Brandon Jones doubled, bringing in Durham.

That was all the scoring. The Curve collected only two more hits in the rest of the game -- Chase d'Arnaud singled to begin the 4th and moved to second base on a wild pitch, but was left there; LF Yung Chi Chen singled in the 8th, but was forced out at second. The 8th inning was the closest the Curve came to scoring again. After Chen was forced out on Jose De Los Santos' grounder, walks to d'Arnaud and Josh Harrison loaded the bases, but relief pitcher Tom Boleska, in what was probably his first pro at-bat, struck out to end the inning.

Starter Justin Wilson pitched 6 innings and allowed the 3 runs, only one of which was earned. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks, with 4 strikeouts. After the 2nd inning, he gave up only a walk and two hits in the rest of his outing. Tom Boleska had much better luck on the mound than he did at the plate. He pitched 3 scoreless and hitless innings, striking out 3 batters. He allowed only a walk, and immediately erased that runner with a double play to end the game.

Altoona's RHP Derek Hankins has been promoted to AAA Indianapolis today. He will join the Indians in Syracuse. Hankins has made 6 starts and 20 relief appearances for the Curve this season and has earned a 5-3 record with 5 saves, and a 1.82 ERA. Opposing batters have been hitting .215 against Hankins, who has allowed 58 hits in 79 innings of work, with 27 walks and 48 strikeouts. To make room for Hankins, reliever Brian Bass will be assigned to Altoona, though this might be on paper only.

Durham’s Grand Slam Sparks Curve; Marte Back With A Homer

Monday's action in the Pirates' lower minor leagues... the Bradenton Marauders have a scheduled day off today.

Altoona Curve 11, Erie SeaWolves 2 (box)

RF Miles Durham's grand slam ignited a 9-run 8th inning to lift the Curve over the SeaWolves in the series opener. Both teams put runners on base in the first four innings, but none of those runners scored. The Curve got the scoring started in the 5th, when LF Brandon Jones led off with a single and DH Yung Chi Chen brought him across the plate with a double into center field. CF Anthony Norman singled to score Chen from second base, and the Curve were ahead, 2-0. The SeaWolves tied the game in the bottom of the 9th. Curve starter Jeff Locke had allowed two doubles over the first 5 innings and had struck out 9 batters. With two outs in the 6th, Locke gave up three singles and hit a batter, which gave Erie two runs.

Then came the 8th. Norman led off with a double, and he scored the go-ahead run on singles by SS Chase d'Arnaud and 1B Matt Hague. A new pitcher, Luis Marte, came in from the bullpen for Erie. 2B Jordy Mercer was the first batter Marte faced, and Mercer bunted the runners up one base. C Kris Watts was intentionally walked, then Durham rocketed a grand slam over the left field wall, to give the Curve a 7-2 lead. Jones followed the home run with a single, and Chen followed that with a 2-run homer, bumping the Curve to 9-2. The next batter, 3B Josh Harrison, was hit by a pitch, which caused the ejection of Luis Marte and his manager. The next pitcher got a ground out, then walked d'Arnaud. A wild pitch put both Harrison and d'Arnaud into scoring position. Hague grounded to the mound, but a throwing error by the pitcher brought in both Harrison and d'Arnaud, to make it 11-2. A ground out ended the inning.

Ramon Aguero pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Curve, with a walk and a double. Mike Colla pitched the 9th, and gave up only a single.

Two Homers For Trinidad; Three Hits For Lyles and Grossman

Monday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates. The West Virginia Power have a a scheduled day off.

GCL Pirates 11, GCL Braves 3 (box)

The Pirates got in on the recent hit-o-rama fun the minor league teams have been having. This afternoon, the Pirates collected 20 hits on their way to 11 runs. 2B Kevin Mort went 5-for-5, all singles. SS Jorge Bishop had 4 hits, including a double, and 2 RBI. 1B Michaelangel Trinidad had 4 hits, two of which were home runs, and he knocked in 7 of the Pirates' 11 runs.

The fun started with 5 runs in the 2nd inning. Trinidad's first homer was for 2 runs after Mort's first single, and it was followed by a walk to CF Chih-Wei Hsu and three doubles, by 3B Eric Avila, Bishop, and LF Exicardo Cayonez, for 3 more runs. Trinidad blasted another 2-run homer in the 3rd inning, following another one of Mort's singles. Bishop led off the 4th with a single, and he scored on two more singles, by RF Gregory Polanco and Mort.

Polanco, Mort, and Trinidad hit three consecutive singles in the 6th to add another run. The Pirates' final two runs came in the 7th, on singles by Cayonez, C Elias Diaz, and Mort, with a 2-RBI double by Trinidad.

Vincent Payne pitched 4 innings in his 5th start for the Pirates. He scattered 3 hits, and only one counted -- a solo home run in the 4th inning. He did not walk anyone, and he struck out 2 batters. Bryton Trepagnier made his second pro appearance and earned his first win. He gave up a single to the first batter he faced, but erased him with a double play, and retired the rest of the batters he faced in two innings. Joan Montero also gave up a single and erased the runner with a double play in the 7th. He also gave up two runs (one earned) on a single, a walk, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and an RBI ground out in the 8th inning. Dinesh Patel pitched a scoreless 9th inning, allowing only a single.

Decker Is Pitcher of the Week; Solano Goes 3-For-3

Limited action on Tuesday, just two daytime games... everyone's watching the All-Star Game tonight.

Vermont Lake Monsters 3, State College Spikes 1 (box)

LF Adalberto Santos and C Matt Skirving each had two hits, but the Spikes managed only one run this afternoon as they fell to the Lake Monsters. While they put at least one runner on base in all but two innings, the 7th was the only one in which they pushed a run across. With one out in the 7th, Skirving doubled into left field, and scored on 2B Gift Ngoepe's single up the middle. Ngoepe tried to go to second on the throw, but was tagged out. The Spikes had two runners on in the 1st inning, on back-to-back singles by Santos and 1B Matt Curry, and again in the 2nd, when Skirving singled and CF Kyle Saukko reached base on an error. Both times, a ground out ended the inning.

Starter Tyler Waldron pitched 5 innings in his 5th start for the Spikes, but he suffered the loss. He gave up a run in the top of the 1st inning, on a triple and a sacrifice fly. He worked his way out of a bases loaded jam (double, single, and walk) with a double play in the 5th inning. Trent Stevenson gave up 2 runs in the 6th, on two walks and a 2-RBI double, then pitched two more scoreless innings. Justin Ennis pitched the final inning, retiring the side in order including one strikeout.

Spikes' RHP Kevin Decker was named the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week for July 5-11. Decker pitched in two games in relief, for a total of 10.1 scoreless innings. He allowed a total of 5 hits and 2 walks in those two appearances, while striking out 9 batters. Overall, Decker has a 2-0 record, with a 2.42 ERA in 22.1 innings, and a total of 14 strikeouts.

GCL Pirates 4, GCL Blue Jays 2 (box)

2B Luis Solano went 3-for-3 this afternoon for the Pirates, with a single, a double, and a triple. After the Blue Jays scored 2 runs in the top of the 3rd, Solano's lead-off triple got the Pirates' bats going. He scored on DH Brian Friday's single, to cut the lead in half. The tied the score with a run in the 5th. SS Kevin Mort walked and Solano singled, then two wild pitches brought Mort in to score. LF Exicardo Cayonez also tripled, with one out in the 6th. He scored on 3B Eric Avila's sacrifice fly, giving the Pirates the lead. Solano's double came with two outs in the 7th, and was followed by pinch-hitter Michaelangel Trinidad's double, bringing in Solano for the Pirates' fourth run.

Vincent Payne started for the Pirates, and he was responsible for both of the Blue Jays' runs. He gave up a single and a walk in the top of the 3rd. Yeyber Sanchez relieved Payne, but gave up an RBI single, hit a batter, then threw a wild pitch that scored the second run. Sanchez threw 3 scoreless innings after that, allowing only one walk. He was credited with the win, his 3rd of the season. James Archibald added two scoreless innings, working around a single in each and a hit batter in the 8th. Joan Montero pitched the 9th, and loaded the bases with 3 walks, but got the inning-ending double play to earn his first save.

Brian Friday continued his rehab work by going 1-for-2, with a walk, and he was also hit by a pitch.

Bixler Returns; Krol Saves #21

IMG_3495The Pittsburgh Pirates have reaquired infielder Brian Bixler (photo) from the Cleveland Indians' organization. Bixler, who was originally drafted by the Pirates in the second round of the 2004 draft, played in the Pirates' organization for all of his career until he was traded to Cleveland in January 2010 for infielder Jesus Brito. Bixler did not make the Cleveland major league team out of spring training, and he was removed from their 40-man roster. He has been playing for AAA Columbus, and has appeared in several games against the Indy Indians. For the Clippers, the 27-year-old Ohio native has been hitting .278 with 13 doubles, one triple, 3 homers, and 27 RBI. That's about the same average but with a little less power than he showed with the Indy Indians in 2009. Bixler has not been able to take his AAA level success up to the major league level. In a total of 68 games with the Pirates, Bixler hit .178 with 7 doubles, one triple, and 5 RBI, and struck out 62 times. Bixler will join the Indy Indians after the All-Star break.

They got into the 4th inning before rain halted play in Altoona this afternoon. The Curve got busy in the bottom of the 1st, with a double by 3B Shelby Ford, and an RBI single by 2B Jordy Mercer. Mercer stole second, then went to third on walks to C Kris Watts and LF Brandon Jones. RF Miles Durham drove in both Mercer and Watts with a line drive single into left field. Durham also stole second, but was left there when the inning ended.

Starter Tim Alderson retired the side in the top of the 1st, but struggled after that. The Squirrels came right back in the top of the 2nd to tie the score. The inning began with three consecutive singles, which brought in one run. A throwing error by 1B Matt Hague loaded the bases, and another single drove in two more runs. A sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position -- and provided the first out of the inning. A hit batter loaded the bases again, but an infield fly rule pop out and a grounder force out ended the inning. The second inning did not go any better. A double, a walk, and a double opened the inning, bringing in 2 runs. After two ground outs, another double drove in the Squirrels' 6th run. Alderson was relieved by Dustin Molleken to begin the top of the 4th, and Molleken retired the side in order.

The Curve went down in order in the 2nd. Mercer and Watts both singled in the 3rd, though neither scored. The bottom of the 4th began with a walk to Durham and a single by CF Anthony Norman, moving Durham to third. Molleken's sacrifice bunt moved Norman to second base, and that's how things stood when play was halted. The game will be resumed on August 26th.
