Spikes Open The Season With A Loss; Hughes Wins #9, Krol Saves #17

Williamsport Crosscutters 5, State College Spikes 3 (box)

The Spikes opened their season on the road tonight, unfortunately on the losing end. Starter Zack Von Rosenberg, who had pitched just one inning in the 2009 season, was charged with the loss. He pitched 4 innings, and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and a walk, with 2 strikeouts.

Williamsport struck first, with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, on two doubles. The Spikes took the lead in the top of the 3rd, with a 2-out rally. SS Walker Gourley doubled, and 2B Gift Ngoepe singled, driving in Gourley. Ngoepe stole second base, and he scored on 3B Chase Lyles' RBI single (his first professional hit), giving the Spikes a 2-1 lead.

A 2-run homer, followed by a walk and an RBI double gave the Crosscutters 3 more runs and the lead in the 4th inning. Another single nearly brought in another run, but RF Andury Acevedo's throw in to the plate to C Miguel Mendez had the lead runner out at the plate. Those 4 Williamsport runs were all charged to Von Rosenberg.

The Spikes got within one run again in the 6th. DH Kelson Brown and CF Justin Bencsko's each collected his first professional hit -- a single for Brown, and an RBI triple for Bencsko.

Ryan Beckman took over on the mound for Von Rosenberg for the 5th inning. He gave up a single and hit a batter, but did not allow a run to score. Eliecer Navarro pitched the next 2 innings. He loaded the bases in the 6th with a walk and two singles, but struck out the next batter to end the inning without a run scoring. Navarro gave up a solo home run in the 7th, giving the Crosscutters an insurance run. Justin Ennis made his pro debut with a perfect 8th inning -- a strikeout and two ground outs.

Leach Pitches 7 Shutout Innings; Power Lose #6 Straight

Bradenton Marauders 13, St. Lucie Mets 1 (box)

Brian Leach won his third game of the season with 7 shutout innings against St. Lucie. Leach scattered 4 hits, no walks, and had one batter reach base on an error. He never had more than one runner on base in any one inning. He also struck out 8 Mets' batters.

The only run the Mets scored came in the 8th inning. Ramon Aguero took over for Leach to begin the 8th. He gave up a single, then a passed ball and a ground out put the runner on third base. Another single drove in the run. Noah Krol pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing one single.

While the Marauders' pitching staff was holding the Mets down, the Mets' pitching staff was having a lot more trouble with the Marauders' bats. They were quiet for the first two innings, then exploded for 5 runs in the 3rd. CF Austin McClune began the fun with a walk. DH Andrew Walker dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but when the Mets' pitcher missed the pick-up, the Marauders had runners on first and second with no outs. 2B Adenson Chourio also bunted, and the bases were loaded. SS Greg Picart cleared the bases with a triple into right field. RF Robbie Grossman kept things going with a walk, and a wild pitch put him on second base, though it didn't let Picart score. Picart did score on C Tony Sanchez's sacrifice fly, and a single by LF Quincy Latimore drove in Grossman.

McClune got the next inning started too, this time with a single. Walker walked, and Chourio singled, scoring McClune. A balk moved both runners into scoring position, and a wild pitch brought in Walker. Grossman's sacrifice fly plated Chourio, and the Marauders were up, 8-0.

It was Grossman's turn to triple in the 6th, which brought in both Walker, who had reached base on a fielding error, and Picart, who had singled. Picart drove in his 4th run of the game with a single in the 8th, after McClune walked and Chourio singled for the second time. Another fielding error by the Mets put Latimore on base in the 9th, and 1B Calvin Anderson brought him in with his 6th home run of the season.

Curve Pound Rock Cats; Power Shut Out

The Bradenton Marauders began their All-Star break today. The Florida State League All-Star Game will be played on Saturday at 7:35 pm. It is not being broadcast on milb.tv this year.

Altoona Curve 10, New Britain Rock Cats 2 (box)

Like the Indy Indians, the Curve overpowered their opponents tonight. Altoona recorded 17 hits on the way to 10 runs. SS Chase d'Arnaud led the onslaught by going 4-for-5 at the plate, and both 3B Josh Harrison and 1B Matt Hague contributed 4 RBI.

Starter Bryan Morris won his 3rd game for the Curve, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings. He walked 2 batters and struck out 6. Morris gave up one run in the top of the 1st on a walk, a stolen base, a throwing error by C Hector Gimenez on the stolen base attempt, and an RBI double. New Britain also scored a run on a walk and a double in the 5th.

The Curve answered the run in the top of the 1st with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. CF Gorkys Hernandez tripled, and scored on Josh Harrison's sacrifice fly. A double by Matt Hague, a ground out to move the runner over by 2B Jordy Mercer, and a sacrifice fly by Hector Gimenez gave the Curve a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning.

New Britain tied the game again with their run in the top of the 5th, but the Curve broke the game open in the bottom of the frame. DH Shelby Ford and SS Chase d'Arnaud both singled and Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Harrison's double plated both Ford and d'Arnaud, and a sacrifice fly by Hague brought in Hernandez. A single by Mercer and a walk to Gimenez loaded the bases again, but all three were left on base when a fly out ended the inning.

The Curve put up another 3-spot in the next inning. Four consecutive singles began the inning -- by RF Miles Durham, Ford, d'Arnaud, and Hernandez (RBI). Harrison hit another sacrifice fly to score Ford. D'Arnaud came in on an RBI ground out by Hague. The final two Curve runs came in the 8th, on a 2-run homer by Hague, following a double by Harrison.

Derek Hankins pitched two perfect innings for the Curve, with two strikeouts. Jeff Sues finished the game with a perfect 9th inning, with one strikeout.

Losses At All Levels

The Indy Indians lost today, as did all of the other affiliates who were playing -- the Power also won, splitting a double header.

Tomorrow MLB will hold the 2010 Draft... stay tuned!

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Altoona Curve 3 (box)

Like yesterday, the Curve had an early 3-run inning to take the lead, but also like yesterday, they gave up runs in the late innings and lost to the Fisher Cats. And like the Indy Indians today, the Curve faced a former teammate -- Ronald Uviedo, who was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays last week, made the start for the Fisher Cats. Uviedo was a reliever while pitching for the Curve, so he will need to get stretched out -- he was limited to just 3 innings today. Uviedo retired his old mates in order in the 1st inning, but gave up two walks, to LF Alex Presley and DH Jim Negrych in the 2nd. The walks were followed by a booming home run by RF Miles Durham, to give the Curve 3 runs. Uviedo also walked 3B Josh Harrison in the 3rd inning, but left him on base.

Jared Hughes had the start for the Curve. He begin the bottom of the 1st inning with three straight singled, loading the bases with no outs. A grounder to short for a force out at second brought in one run, but they did not get a double play. Instead, Hughes struck out the next batter and ended the inning with an easy grounder to first.

That 3-1 score held for the next 5 innings. Counting those three outs after the three singles in the 1st, Hughes retired 17 Fisher Cats batters in order, taking him to the 6th inning with two outs. That's when he loaded the bases again, on a single, a walk, and a single, before bearing down to get out of the jam with a fly out.

After Uviedo finished the 3rd inning, the Curve got a walk by C Hector Gimenez in the 4th, and SS Chase d'Arnaud was hit by a pitch in the 5th, but neither scored. They came close in the 6th, when Josh Harrison led off with a double. A passed ball had Harrison moving, but he was caught in a run-down on the third base line, and eventually tagged out.

New Hampshire added a run in the bottom of the 7th off reliever Tony Watson. A double and two ground outs did the trick, and the Curve lead was cut to 3-2. The Curve got the run back right away, when d'Arnaud led off the top of the 8th with a triple, then scored on a wild pitch. Two more Curve batters got on base in the inning, with a walk to CF Gorkys Hernandez and 1B Matt Hague being hit by a pitch, but a double play ended the inning without further runs scoring.

The Fisher Cats did their damage in the bottom of the 8th. With Watson still on the mound, a double and a ground out put a base runner on third. Jimmy Barthmaier relieved Watson, but he walked the only batter he faced. Danny Moskos came on next, and he gave up an RBI single to tie the game. A throwing error on the play moved the runners to second and third base. Another single drove in both runners to give the Fisher Cats the winning run plus an insurance run. The Curve tried to rally in the 9th, when Gimenez walked and Negrych singled, but two strikeouts ended the game.

Alderson Is POW, Hughes Earns 8th Win

Curve pitcher Tim Alderson was named the Eastern League's Pitcher Of The Week, for the week of May 24 - 30. Alderson won two starts during that week, on the 24th and the 29th. In 13 innings of work, he gave up only one run on 8 hits and 3 walks, with a total of 10 strikeouts. His ERA for the two games was 0.69. Overall, Alderson has a 4-2 record and a 4.75 ERA in 10 starts for the Curve.

Reliever Ronald Uviedo, who has made 16 appearances for the Curve this season, was traded today to the Blue Jays in return for starter Dana Eveland, who will be joining the Pirates' rotation. Uviedo was on the Pirates' 40-man roster, so trading him opens up a space on the 40-man roster for Eveland. Uviedo has an 0-2 record with the Curve, no saves, and a 3.22 ERA in 22.1 innings. He has allowed 13 hits, 8 runs (3 homers), and 12 walks, while striking out 28 batters.

Altoona Curve 4, New Britain Rock Cats 1 (box)

Jared Hughes pitched 7 strong innings, allowing only one run on 5 hits and a walk, while striking out 6 batters, to earn his Eastern League-leading 8th win of the season. Hughes gave up the run in the 1st inning. A lead-off single, a stolen base, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI ground out gave the Rock Cats their only tally of the game. Hughes gave up a double in each of the next two innings, and a single in the 4th, but each time worked around the base runner to keep the Rock Cats from scoring. The last single plus the walk came in the 6th inning, but again Hughes bore down and ended the inning with the runners still standing there. He finished off his night with two strikeouts in the 7th inning.

The Curve put runners on base in each of the first 4 innings, but could not push them around to score. Two singles by CF Gorkys Hernandez, walks by 1B Matt Hague and RF Miles Durham, and a double by LF Alex Presley were not enough to bring in any runs. Finally in the 3rd, the Curve tied the score at 1-1 when C Kris Watts led off with a double, moved to third on SS Chase d'Arnaud's single, and scored on Hernandez's sacrifice fly. A walk to DH Jim Negrych and a single by Hague loaded the bases, but all three were left on base when the inning ended.

D'Arnaud got the go-ahead RBI in the 6th. Presley and Durham led off with back-to-back singles. A bunt by Watts went a little awry, and Durham was out at second, but Presley made it safely to third and Watts was safe on first. That set up d'Arnaud, who lined a double into left field, scoring Presley, for the 2-1 lead.

The Curve tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the 9th. Negrych reached second base on a throwing error by the Rock Cats' third baseman Juan Portes. Hague walked, then 2B Jordy Mercer grounded to third base. Portes made the force out of Negrych at third, but then made a throwing error, and Hague ended up on third, with Mercer safe on second. A wild pitch allowed Hague to score, and a single by 3B Josh Harrison brought in Mercer.

Jeff Sues pitched a scoreless 8th inning for the Curve, retiring the side in order. Danny Moskos finished things off by striking out the side in the 9th, earning his 12th save of the season.

The Curve have a school-day special in New Britain tomorrow, with the game beginning at 10:30 am.

Triple Play For Curve; Barthmaier’s Season Debut

Akron Aeros 5, Altoona Curve 2 (box)

The Curve turned the second double play in their history today, in an early game in Akron. In the 6th inning, with reliever Derek Hankins on the mound,Akron's LF Cristo Arnal led off with a single, and former Curve and Indy Indian C Miguel Perez was hit by a pitch. CF John Drennen lined right to SS Chase d'Arnaud, who made the catch, quickly stepped on second base, and fired to Matt Hague atfirst base for the third out. (The first triple play by the Curve came on May 3, 2001 at home in Altoona, against the Harrisburg Senators. It was a 2-6-3 play: C JR House to SS Shaun Skrehot to 1B Chris Peterson.)

Unfortunately, the triple play could not make up for a lack of offense, as the Curve batters managed only 4 hits and 2 runs in the game, ending their 8-game winning streak. After going down in order over the first two innings, the Curve scored both of their runs in the 3rd inning, with the help of three Akron errors. C Kris Watts led off with a double. DH Miles Durham singled into center field, moving Watts to third, and Durham moved up to second base when the Aeros' first baseman missed the catch on the throw in from the outfield for an error. The second error occurred on d'Arnaud's ball to second base, and it let both Watts and Durham score, as d'Arnaud was safe on first. 2B Josh Harrison also reached base on an error, advancing d'Arnaud to third base, but they did not advance further before the inning ended.

After two more 1-2-3 innings, the Curve put two runners on base in the 6th, on CF Gorkys Hernandez's single, and Hague being hit by a pitch. They were also both left on base. Altoona loaded the bases in the 7th on walks to Watts and Durham, and d'Arnaud being hit by a pitch, but two strikeouts ended that threat. The last Curve hit was by LFJose De Los Santos in the 9th, who was also left stranded.

Jared Hughes made the start for the Curve. He gave up one run in the bottom of the 1st inning, on a lead-off double, a ground out, and a sacrifice fly. He gave up singles in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, but erased both runners with a double plays, one started by d'Arnaud (6-4-3) and one started by Hague at first base (3-6-1).

Hughes could not get out of a jam in the 4th inning, though. A walk, a wild pitch, and two singles led off the inning and brought in one run. Hughes got two outs, but then gave up back-to-back doubles, bringing in three more runs. Hughes exited having allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. Derek Hankins finished the 4th inning, then pitched 4 more scoreless innings, scattering 3 hits, 2 walks, and the hit batter.

Curve Take Two From Erie

Saturday evening wins for the entire Pirates' minor league system!

Altoona Curve 8, Erie SeaWolves 3 Game 1 (box)

Altoona had a double-header, making up for a game that had been rained out back in April. The Curve exploded out of the box with a 4-run 1st inning and never looked back in Game 1. 3B Jordy Mercer led the charge by going 4-for-4 with an RBI, and RF Alex Presley and 1B Matt Hague had 3 hits each.

A throwing error put SS Chase d'Arnaud on base to begin the game, and singles by CF Gorkys Hernandez, Hague, and Mercer, plus a double by Presley and a wild pitch brought in those 4 runs in the top of the 1st. Erie came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, on three walks and a double off starter Jared Hughes. Hughes made a wild pitch on strike three to put a runner on base in the 2nd inning, and a double and a sacrifice fly brought in another run, to bring Erie within one run, 4-3.

Hague led off the 3rd inning with a walk, then stole second base. Mercer and C Hector Gimenez followed with singles, and Presley's second double of the game plus another single by LF Jose De Los Santos added 3 more runs. Another walk, this one to DH Jim Negrych, began the 4th inning, and he scored on two singles and a fly out with a missed catch error by the Erie third baseman.

Hughes settled down a bit in the 3rd and 4th innings, but began the 5th with a walk and a single. Mike Dubee finished up the inning with a strikeout and a grounder force out, then allowed only one hit over the next two innings. Dubee earned the win. Hughes struck out 7 batters in his 4.1 innings, and Dubee added 5 more strikeouts.

Curve 7, SeaWolves 3 Game 2 (box)

The Curve jumped out to an early lead in this game also, with 3 runs in the top of the 1st. This time, SS Chase d'Arnaud opened the game with a walk, and singles by CF Gorkys Hernandez, DH Jim Negrych, and 3B Jordy Mercer brought in 3 runs. Derek Hankins gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, on three singles, a walk, and a triple, tying the game at 3-3.

LF Alex Presley liked the idea of that triple, so he hit one of his own in the 3rd inning, following a single by 2B Josh Harrison, to break the tie. C Kris Watts gave the Curve an insurance run in the 4th, with a lead-off home run. The Curve bats were quiet for a couple of innings, then woke up again in the top of the 7th. With one out, Negrych and 1B Matt Hague hit back-to-back doubles, and Harrison added another single, for 2 more runs.

Hankins retired 10 Erie batters in order after the runs scored in the 2nd inning. He got a strikeout but gave up two walks to begin the 6th inning, and was relieved by Corey Hamman. Hamman finished the inning with two quick outs. Danny Moskos pitched a perfect inning in the 7th, including 2 strikeouts, to finish the game. Hankins earned his 4th win of the season.

The Curve recorded a total of 23 hits over the two games.

Altoona One-Hit; Bradenton Wins With 5-Run 10th

Akron Aeros 2, Altoona Curve 0 (box)

CF Gorkys Hernandez had the Curve's only hit on Tuesday night as three Akron pitchers combined for the one-hit shut out. Aeros' Scott Barnes earned the win with 5.1 hitless and scoreless innings, then Steven Wright followed with 1.2 more hitless and scoreless innings. Omar Aguilar pitched the final two innings, and he also kept the Curve scoreless, but Hernandez led off the 8th with his hit. Hernandez got as far as third base on two ground outs, but he was left there 90 feet away from scoring. The catch for the Aero pitchers was that they allowed a total of 8 walks. The Curve had at least one base runner on in 6 of their 9 innings because of all the walks. They even loaded the bases on three walks in the 6th, but could not push a run across the plate.

Curve starter Justin Wilson pitched 5.2 innings and allowed both of the Aeros' runs on 5 hits and a walk, while striking out 6 batters. Wilson worked around two singles and a throwing error by C Hector Gimenez in the 1st inning, then got a strikeout to slide out of a jam with runners on the corners in the 2nd. He retired the next 11 batters in order before giving up a walk and a 2-run homer in the 6th. Tony Watson came on in relief of Wilson after the homer. Watson finished the 6th with a fly out, then gave up a lone single in each of the next two innings. Ronald Uviedo pitched the 9th inning and also gave up a lone single.

Ford Homers From Both Sides, Hughes With 7th Win

Altoona Curve 9, Richmond Flying Squirrels 2 (box)

Jared Hughes earned his 7th win, the most of any pitcher in the Eastern League, as the Curve beat the Flying Squirrels in Richmond on Saturday evening. Hughes allowed two runs (one earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4 batters. He breezed through the first two innings, then gave up the earned run in the 3rd, on a hit batter, a single up the middle, and an RBI ground out. Hughes then retired 9 more Squirrels in order, before giving up a double in the 6th. A ground out moved the runner to third base, and a throwing error by 3B Josh Harrison let the runner score. Hughes allowed two singles and a walk in the 7th inning, but a double play got him out of that jam.

1B Shelby Ford provided the big part of the Curve's offensive attack. He went 3-for-5 for the night, with a single and two home runs, accounting for 5 RBI. Ford homered from both sides of the plate -- from the right side in the 4th and from the left side in the 7th. Ford also singled in the 2nd inning, but was left stranded. He put the Curve onto the scoreboard for the first time in the 4th inning, when he homered over the left field wall after a walk by RF Miles Durham. C Hector Gimenez also knocked a 2-run homer in the 5th inning, following 2B Jim Negrych's single.

The Curve went into the 7th inning with a 4-2 lead, and that was when they exploded for 5 more runs. SS Chase d'Arnaud led off with a walk, and moved to third base when CF Alex Presley singled up the middle. Negrych plated d'Arnaud with a ground out to first base. Gimenez singled to put runners on the corners, and Harrison's ground out brought in Presley. Durham was hit by a pitch, then Ford blasted his second home run, also bringing in Gimenez and Durham.

Relievers Mike Dubee and Danny Moskos each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Curve. Gimenez and Durham each had two hits for the Curve. D'Arnaud and Presley both singled and walked twice, with a stolen base for d'Arnaud.

Who was the last Curve batter to have 5 RBI in one game? It was Ford, on August 8th of last season.

Six Scoreless For Morris In Loss; Hughes Wins #6

Daytona Cubs 2, Bradenton Marauders 1 (box)

Starter Bryan Morris pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk, while striking out 4 Cubs' batters. Unfortunately he did not earn a win, as the Marauders lost in extra innings. Morris had to work around a fielding error and a walk in the top of the 1st inning, but got out of the frame leaving two runners on base. He allowed only one base runner over the next 4 innings, and that was a double to lead off the 4th. Back-to-back singles began the 6th inning, and a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, but Morris got a strikeout and a pop out to end that inning.

The Marauders were also held scoreless over the first 5 innings. They had at least one runner on base in each of those innings, but base running errors erased two of the runners. Four runners were left on base, two after singles and two after walks. Finally in the 6th, Daytona starter Brooks Raley was relieved, and the Marauders got going. With one out, four consecutive singles, by C Tony Sanchez, LF Quincy Latimore, 3B Jeremy Farrell, and 1B Calvin Anderson brought in one run, and the Marauders had a slim lead.

Casey Erickson took over for Morris to begin the 7th inning. He retired the side in order in the 7th, but then gave up a run on a double and a single in the 8th to tie the game. SS Brock Holt singled in the bottom of the 7th, but was left stranded. They also went down in order in the 8th and 9th, and the game went into extras.

Noah Krol relieved Erickson to begin the 9th. He gave up a lead-off single, but did not let that runner score. Then in the top of the 10th, a walk, a stolen base, and a triple brought in the go-ahead run for Daytona. The Marauders could not respond in the bottom of the inning, and Krol was charged with the loss.

This was Bryan Morris' fourth straight start in which he did not allow an earned run. That gives him 26 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Morris's ERA stands at 0.66 -- 3 earned runs over 40.2 innings.

Curve Shut Out, But Power Do The Shutting Out

West Virginia Power 2, Kannapolis Intimidators 0 (box)

Kyle McPherson and Maurice Bankston combined for 9 shutout innings against Kannapolis on Friday. McPherson scattered 4 hits, no walks over 7 innings, while striking out 9 Kannapolis batters. He had to work around 3 errors by his teammates to keep the Intimidators from scoring. The first error came in the top of the 1st -- a throwing error by 3B Jesus Brito. McPherson worked around that runner, then around back-to-back singles in the 3rd. A throwing error by 2B Jarek Cunningham stopped what should have been a double play in the 5th, allowing the batter to reach second base, but McPherson got a strikeout and a ground out to end that inning. A throwing error by Brito in the 7th after a single put runners on second and third bases, but again McPherson worked around them, leaving both of them right there.

Bankston pitched the last two innings. He gave up three singles in the 8th, but the first was doubled off first base after a fly out, and the other two were left stranded. He gave up a walk in the 9th, but struck out two, earning his first save of the season. The win was McPherson's second of the year.

The Power batters were having to work hard to get their runs. Kannapolis starter Terry Doyle struck out 14 Power batters in his 7 innings of work, including 3 strikeouts each by LF Rogelios Noris and DH Kyle Morgan. Each member of the Power line up struck out at least once.

The Power put a runner on base in each of the first three innings, but couldn't score. CF EvanChambers singled and stole second base in the 1st inning, and C Ramon Cabrera singled and went to second on a wild pitch in the 2nd, but neither could come around to score. Cunningham singled in the 3rd, but was also left stranded. Noris finally got the scoring started in the 4th, when he led off with a solo home run, his second homer in two days.

After the homer, the next 12 Power batters went down in order. In the bottom of the 8th, when Doyle had been relieved by Garrett Johnson, the Power were able to get things going again. RF Wes Freeman greeted Johnson with a double, SS Benji Gonalez walked, and Chambers loaded the bases with his second hit of the game. Cunningham was hit by a pitch, forcing in Freeman with the Power's insurance run. A grounder to first forced Gonzalez out at the plate, and Chambers was caught out between third and the plate, and no further runs scored.

Owens: 6 No-Hit Innings, 11 Strikeouts

Altoona Curve 9, Richmond Flying Squirrels 1 (box)

Rudy Owens shot down the Flying Squirrels on Tuesday night with 6 no-hit innings and 11 strikeouts. He was one walk away from a perfect game -- after mowing down 17 straight Squirrels, Owens walked Richmond relief pitcher Craig Whitaker. Owens was clearly not pleased with himself with that walk, but he held on to strike out the next batter. He was relieved after the 6 innings due to the pitch count. He had thrown 97 pitches at that point, and his limit was 100. Owens struck out the side in the 1st inning, one in the 2nd and 5th, and two in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th. He got a little help from his friends, of course, with SS Chase d'Arnaud and 1B Matt Hague making two critical fielding plays in the 5th and 6th respectively.

Reliever Jeff Sues earned his 4th save of the season with three strong innings of work. He gave up an unearned run in the 7th, when the lead-off batter reached on a fielding error by 3B Jordy Mercer, and two singles followed. Mercer made another error in the 8th, but Sues worked around it, and kept that runner from scoring.

The Curve posted 13 hits on their way to 9 runs. LF Shelby Ford, who has been struggling over the past month, led the way by going 3-for-3 at the plate. That doubled his hit total for the season, and lifted his average to .188. D'Arnaud and Ford started the scoring in the 1st inning, when d'Arnaud singled and Ford doubled, moving d'Arnaud to third. Mercer's RBI ground out brought in the run.

D'Arnaud and Ford got another rally started in the 3rd inning, this time reversing the hits -- d'Arnaud doubled and Ford singled. Mercer again brought a run in, this time with a sacrifice fly to score d'Arnaud. Ford stole second, and he scored on 2B Jim Negrych's single up the middle.

The Curve sent 10 batters to the plate in the 4th inning, as they added on 5 runs. CF Alex Presley led off with a walk, and stole second base. C Hector Gimenez doubled Presley in, then moved to third base on Owens' sacrifice bunt. D'Arnaud brought in Gimenez with a sacrifice fly. That cleared the bases with two outs, but the Curve got going again. Ford singled and Mercer reached base on a fielding error by the Richmond third baseman. Hague doubled, scoring both Ford and Mercer. Negrych walked, and then RF Miles Durham singled to bring in Hague. Matt Hague doubled again in the 9th inning, and added one more run to the Curve total when Durham singled again.

Chase d'Arnaud, Matt Hague, Miles Durham, and Alex Presley each had two hits in the game. Presley's hitting streak is now at 18 games. The Altoona team record in 21. Durham's hitting streak is now at 8 games.

Ross Ohlendorf will be making a rehab start with the Curve on Wednesday night.
