Noris and Latimore Going Strong

Just a few game results for the Pirates' players and friends in Thursday's winter league action:

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE
Venados de Mazatlan  3,  Yaquis de Obregon  1 --
Los Venados' bats were quiet until the 5th inning, when LF Rogelios Noris followed a one-out walk with a double, giving Mazatlan 2 runners in scoring position.  A single by SS Heber Gomez drove in both runners.  Obregon got one of the runs back in the top of the 6, but Mazatlan added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning with two singles and a sacrifice fly.  CF Jeff Salazar walked twice for Obregon but did not score.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE
Perth Heat  9,  Adelaide Bite  3 --
The Bite posted 12 hits, but could only score in one inning, and the Heat sealed their win with a 5-run 8th inning early on Friday morning.  Adelaide tried to threaten in the bottom of the 1st.  With a runner on 1st after a single and a grounder force out at second,  LF Quincy Latimore grounded to third, which resulted in another force out at second, but Latimore safe at first.  But Latimore was picked off first to end the inning.  Latimore doubled in the 4th inning, but was left on base, as were Bite baserunners in the 2nd, 5th, and 7th innings.  Latimore singled in the 6th, but that time he was erased in a double play.  Finally in the 8th inning, a double and two singles brought in one run for Adelaide.  Latimore followed with another grounder force out at second, which drove in a run and again left Latimore on first base.  Another double let him score from first, and that was all the runs Adelaide would score.  Perth scored 2 runs in the 2nd on a home run, and 2 more in the 5th on three singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.  Adelaide pitching fell apart in the top of the 8th, when four walks and a wild pitch aided a double and two singles to bring in 5 runs.

Claggett Takes A Loss; Homers For Cedeno And Gimenez

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Everyone has probably seen that Zach Duke has been traded to Arizona for a player to be named later.
Also, former Pirate Bryan Bullington, who was removed from the Kansas City Royals' 40-man roster last week, was released by the Royals yesterday.  Then Bullington signed a contract to play in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp for 2011.

Cheering for Pirates' players and friends in the winter leagues on Wednesday.....

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE
Tiburones de La Guaira  4,  Bravos de Margarita  1  (Game 1)  --
This was supposed to be a 7-inning game, but the score was still tied at 1-1 after 7.  A bases-loaded walk forced in Los Bravos' run in the bottom of the 1st.  Los Tiburones tied the score with a run on a single, a ground out, and another single in the 3rd.  Anthony Claggett had pitched a scoreless 7th inning -- he gave up a single, but then picked the base runner off first.  But he started the top of the 8th with a single and a sacrifice bunt, and was then relieved.  The next pitcher loaded the bases with a pair of walks, then he was relieved too.  Two singles and a sacrifice fly brought in 3 runs for Los Tiburones, with the first one charged to Claggett, making him responsible for the loss.  Margarita won the second game 3-0, holding Los Tiburones to just 3 hits in the 7-inning game.  Former Pirate farmhand Ronald Belisario allowed one of the hits along with a walk in the 7th inning, earning his 8th save.

Tigres de Aragua  7,  Navegantes del Magallanes  5  --  Both SS Ronny Cedeno and 1B Hector Gimenez hit 2-run homers for Los Tigres in this win.  Gimenez's blast got Aragua going in their 4-run 1st inning, and Cedeno's homer made the score 6-1 in the 2nd inning.  Gimenez also doubled in the game.  CF Jorge Cortes walked and scored for Los Tigres, and C Raul Chavez was 0-for-3 at the plate.

Latimore Continues To Dominate In Australia

Pirates' outfielder Quincy Latimore has continued to chomp on Australian pitching, while playing left field for the Adelaide Bite of the new Australian Baseball League.  The North Carolina native went 6-for-14 with 3 homers (2 in one game) and 8 RBI and two stolen bases in the Bite's first 4-game series against Melbourne.  The Bite played against the Perth Heat in their second weekend's action, and in that series, Latimore went 9-for-20, with 3 doubles, a triple, another homer, and 4 more RBI.  That gives him a .441 overall average, a .486 OBP, a .941 SLG, and a 1.428 OPS.  His 15 hits, 4 homers, and 12 RBI lead the league.

Nov 17th --  Perth Heat 4,  Adelaide Bite 2 --  We looked at this game last week, but to recap:  Former Curve Paul Mildren suffered the loss when he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks in 5.2 innings.  Latimore doubled in the top of the 1st, contributing to the Bite's 1-run rally.  He also singled in the 5th inning, but was left on base.

Nov 18th --  Bite  7,  Heat  3 --  The Heat out-hit the Bite 10-9, but it was the 6-run top of the 6th that gave the Bite the edge.   Adelaide sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.  The first batter of the inning doubled but was picked off second base.  Then the onslaught started:  a solo homer, a walk, and an RBI triple by Latimore for the second run of the inning.  Latimore scored on 1B Ben Wigmore's double, and Wigmore scored on the next double.  After a pitching change, a walk and another double drove in the 5th run, and a walk and a sacrifice fly made it 6 runs.  Perth hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the inning.  Then Latimore homered to lead off the top of the 7th, increasing the score to 7-2.  Perth added one more run in the bottom of the 7th.  Latimore was 2-for-5 for the game.

Two Hits For Marte In The Dominican League

Cheering for the Pirates' players and friends in Tuesday's winter league action...
I'll be going on the road for a few days... catch up with everyone at the beginning of next week.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Cardenales de Lara  6,  Tigres de Aragua  2  --
Los Tigres were held to 5 hits.  They scored their 2 runs in the 7th inning on a walk, a triple, and a single.  Aragua also had two singles in the 3rd inning but didn't score, and 3 walks in the 6th, but a double play and a pop out ended that inning without a run scoring.  Los Tigres' only other hit in the game was a double by 1B Hector Gimenez to lead off the 9th inning.  Raul Chavez pinch hit in the 9th, but popped out to end the game.  Lastings Milledge started the game in left field, and popped out to end the 2nd inning (with no runners on base).  He was removed from the game as the bottom half of the inning began, but no explanation was given.  CF Jorge Cortes went 0-for-3 for Los Tigres.  Former Indy Indian C Alex Delgado had an RBI single in the 4th for Lara, and doubled and scored on a 2-run homer in the 6th.

Bravos de Margarita  2,  Navegantes del Magallanes  1  --  Pitching ruled for the first 6 innings of this game.  Margarita scored a run in the 7th on two singles and added another run in the 8th on a walk and two more singles.  Los Navegantes scored just one run, which came in the bottom of the 9th, on a walk and a double.  Justin Thomas took the mound in relief for Los Bravos to begin the bottom of the 5th.  He worked around a lead-off single for a scoreless 5th, then loaded the bases on two singles, a sacrifice bunt, and an intentional walk to begin the 6th inning.  Edgar Martinez relieved Thomas and got a strikeout and pop out to end the inning with the bases still loaded.  Ronald Belisario earned his 7th save for Margarita, even though he was responsible for Los Navegantes' run in the 9th.

Leones del Caracas  5,  Caribes del Anzoategui  4  --  Four runs in the top of the 9th were not enough for Los Caribes to catch up to Los Leones.  Adenson Chourio came into the game to pinch-run in the 9th, with the bases loaded and one run already walked in.  A double lined into center field scored the runners from second and third, but Chourio was out at the plate on the throw in from center field.  C Carlos Maldonado was the one who tagged out Chourio.  Maldonado's lead-off homer in the 8th gave Caracas what turned out to be the winning run.  He also singled in the 2nd and walked in the 6th.

Three Hits For Cedeno, Two For Jaramillo

Sunday's winter league action with the Pirates' players and friends...
As usual, the Arizona Fall League has Sunday off.  Guess who is leading the AFL in RBI?  That's right, it's OF Andrew Lambo.
The Australian League also has a few days off, with the Adelaide Bite and Quincy Latimore back in action on Wednesday.

 VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Tigres de Aragua  6,  Cardenales de Lara  4  --
A 4-run 4th inning gave Los Tigres the edge over Los Cardenales.  A pair of singles opened the inning, then after a fly out, CF Jorge Cortes loaded the bases with a single into right field.   Lara changed pitchers, but he gave up three more singles.  The first drove in one run, then SS Ronny Cedeno singled in two more runs.  A passed ball put runners onto second and third bases, and RF/LF Lastings Milledge's single drove in the fourth run of the inning.  Los Tigres' first run came on a solo home run that opened the game in the top of the 1st.  Cedeno singled and Milledge walked after the home run, but they did not score in that inning.  Aragua added a run on a double and a fielding error in the 2nd inning.  Cedeno also singled in the 3rd inning, for a total of 3 hits in the game.  C Raul Chavez was hitless in 5 at-bats.  Lara also scored one run in the 1st inning, to tie the score.  Los Cardenales took a 3-2 lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, but that lead lasted only a few minutes, until Aragua scored 4 in the 4th.

Aguilas del Zulia  10,  Navegantes del Magallanes  4  --  Los Aguilas also had a 4-run inning, the 9th, to cap their scoring and take the win.  LF Mike Ryan singled in the 1st inning for Magallanes but did not come around to score.  Magallanes scored one run in the 3rd and another in the 4th.  In the 9th, Los Navegantes loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, then scored one run on SS Argenis Diaz's sacrifice fly.  Another single plated one more run, but a double play ended the rally.

Los Bravos de Margarita are reporting that manager Luis Dorante has been hospitalized with kidney failure.  He will be out for two weeks.

Latimore Booming Down Under

Left over from late Friday night and early Saturday morning:

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Adelaide Bite  13,  Melbourne Aces 2  (Game 1) --  The Bite continued chomping on the Aces in this 7-inning game.  LF Quincy Latimore got the scoring started for Adelaide in the bottom of the 1st with a 3-run homer that followed a pair of lead-off singles.  The Aces scored one run in the 2nd when two singles and two hit batters forced in a run.  A single, a stolen base, and two ground outs gave Melbourne another run in the 3rd, bringing the score to 3-2.  It was all Adelaide after that.  In the 4th, a single, a balk, and a hit batter put two runners on base, and RBI singles by 3B Stefan Welch and Latimore brought in 2 runs.  The Bite batted around in the 5th to plate 5 runs.  A throwing error, a walk, another balk, an RBI single and a 2 RBI double brought in 3 runs.  At that point, the Melbourne pitcher was ejected from the game.  Latimore reached on a throwing error, which added 2 more runs.  Another 2-RBI double and a sacrifice fly gave the Bite 3 runs in the 6th inning.

Bite   8,  Aces  3  (Game 2)  --  It didn't get any better for Melbourne in the night-cap, though they did post more hits (10).  Adelaide starter Dushan Ruzic scattered 5 hits over the first 6 innings, then gave up one run on a walk, a single, and a sacrifice fly in the 7th.  Two doubles and two singles gave the Aces their other 2 runs in the 8th.  The Bite bats were also quiet for the first three innings, then LF Quincy Latimore started pounding the ball again in the 4th.  His 2-run homer got things started, and the Bite added another run on a double and a single for a 3-0 lead.  Latimore's second homer of the game and third of the day opened the 6th inning.  Then he picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the bottom of the 7th inning.  A walk, a wild pitch, and two throwing errors gave Adelaide one run, then another walk and Latimore's RBI grounder plated the second run of the inning.  Three singles plus a wild pitch and a passed ball added 2 more runs to the Bite's total in the 8th inning, to give the Bite a 4-0 record in the new season.

Quincy Latimore currently has a .429 average (third best in the league).  He leads the ABL with 3 homers, and teammate Ben Wigmore is next with 2.  Latimore and Wigmore also top the RBI list -- 8 for Latimore and 6 for Wigmore.  Guess who's on top of the SLG list?  Latimore with 1.071 and Wigmore with .933.  OPS?  1.601 for Latimore, 1.404 for Wigmore.  Yes, a very small sample, but we can enjoy it while it lasts.

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE

Algondoneros de Guasave  16,  Venados de Mazatlan  1  --  It's the start of deer season in Indiana, and somehow that must have translated down to Mexico.  Guasave posted 21 hits, with each member of the starting line-up collecting at least one hit.  Yurendell de Caster contributed a 3-run homer in Guasave's 6-run 7th inning.  Los Venados scored only one run, which (briefly) tied the score in the 2nd inning.  Rogelios Noris came in as a defensive replacement later in the game, and he had a hit in his only plate appearance.

Latimore And Adelaide Bite Win Second Game

Adelaide Bite  7,  Melbourne Aces  4

LF Quincy Latimore started the 5th-inning rally for the Bite by being hit by a pitch, then scored when DH Ben Wigmore hit his second homer in two games.  The Bite defeated Melbourne for the second time, again taking advantage of Melbourne's errors.

The Aces got out to a better start than in their first game, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, to take a 3-0 lead.  A walk, a single, and a pair of doubles did the damage.  But the Adelaide starting pitcher Darren Fidge chomped down after that inning, and did not allow another hit over his remaining 6 innings.  He allowed only two batters to reach base, both on walks.  One of those was thrown out trying to steal second base, and the other was picked off first by Fidge.  He retired the last 10 batters he faced, and struck out the side in the 8th (7 total strikeouts).   The Aces had two hits in the 9th, after Fidge was relieved -- a solo homer followed by a single.

The Bite got onto the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the 3rd inning.  A fielding error and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second base, then an RBI double brought in the first run.  A wild pitch let the runner score from second base.  In the 4th, Wigmore reached base on a fielding error, then two singles loaded the bases.  A walk forced in Wigmore, and an RBI single plated two more runs, to give Adelaide the lead.  Wigmore's homer in the 5th gave the Bite more insurance.

Latimore went 0-for-3 in his other plate appearances.

Two other Pirates' players have been listed as "reassigned" by their Australian teams:  pitcher Rinku Singh was "reassigned" by the Canberra Cavalry, and pitcher Jarryd Sullivan was reassigned by the Sydney Blue Sox.  It sounds like "reassigned" might be a polite term for "cut".  It's not like they have a big minor league system to reassign them to.

Latimore Shines In Australian Debut

Adelaide Bite 8, Melbourne Aces 1

Pirates' farmhand LF Quincy Latimore singled twice, doubled twice, and scored twice as Adelaide chomped on Melbourne in their Australian Baseball League season opener. Former Altoona Curve pitcher Paul Mildren made the start for the Bite, pitching 7 shut-out innings to earn his team's first win. Mildren worked around 6 hits and a walk, and a couple of errors (each team committed 4 errors), and he also picked a runner off base. In the last three innings he pitched, only one batter reached base, on a single. Melbourne's only run came in the 8th, off reliever Chris Lawson, and that one was unearned, coming on a throwing error, a single, and a double play.

The Bite were able to take advantage of the Aces' errors. They scored one run in the 2nd inning on a walk, a fielding erorr, and a single. In the 4-run 4th inning, two errors made the Bite's job easier. Two lead-off walks and a single brought in the first run. A throwing error and an RBI single plated 2 more runs. A fielding error and another RBI single added the fourth run of the inning.

Latimore singled in the 1st inning and walked in the 3rd inning for Adelaide, but did not score. In the 4th, Latimore struck out -- his only plate appearance when he did not reach base. In the 6th, Latimore started the Bite's rally with a single, then stole second base and scored on an RBI double by DH Ben Wigmore. A single, a double, and an RBI ground out gave Adelaide their seventh run in the 7th inning. Latimore led off the 8th with a walk, then scored on Wigmore's 2-run homer.

The Bite's roster page lists pitcher Mitch Fienemann as being "reassigned", and C Dylan Child (and infielder Dayle Child) as being "reserve". I can understand the "reserve" part, but I'm not sure what or where Fienemann might have been reassigned to.

Australians’ New League; Cedeno and Milledge Do Some Hitting

The Australians are beginning their third iteration of the Australian Baseball League this weekend. The Aussies have had two leagues before -- both had to shut down due to financial issues. This time, the ABL is going to be a partnership between MLB and the Australian Baseball Federation. MLB has been sponsoring the Australian Academy Program since 2001, and several Pirates' farmhands (Jarryd Sullivan, Mitch Fienemann) have participated. This academy works with young Australian and Asian players, similar to the work done by the Dominican and other Caribbean academies.

The new ABL has six teams: the Adelaide Bite (think: shark), the Brisbane Bandits, the Canberra Cavalry, the Melbourne Aces, the Perth Heat, and the Sydney Blue Sox. The season will run into January, with each team playing 40 games. Of course Australian players will be featured, but there are some other "imports" as well. Here's the official ABL site, and you can see the resemblance to many other US minor league sites.

The good news: some Pirates' farmhands are going to be playing

Adelaide Bite: RHP Mitch Fienemann, LHP Paul Mildren (former Altoona Curve), C Dylan Child, OF Quincy Latimore; the team manager is Pirate international scout Tony Harris. Also on the team is a second baseman named Dayle Child.... I'm guessing he's Dylan's brother, but I've not confirmed it. The Bite play their first game on Thursday.

Canberra Cavalry: LHP Rinku Singh

Sydney Blue Sox: RHP Jarryd Sullivan

The Calvalry and Blue Sox open on Saturday Nov 6th at 7:30 AEST in Sydney... which is 4:30 am EST in the US, as best as I can tell. (I will not be up.)

And on to Friday evening's winter league games:

Curve Tie Their Series; Marauders Season Ends

Two of the Pirates' affiliates in playoff action:

Altoona Curve 6, Harrisburg Senators 4 .... (box)

The Senators and the Curve battled back and forth, with errors and poor base running on both sides, but it was the Curve who came out on top to even the best-of-5 series at 1 game each. The Curve scored their runs on 7 hits, 5 of which were doubles. LF Andrew Lambo and 2B Chase d'Arnaud let the way with two hits each, and Lambo contributed 3 RBI.

Harrisburg scored first, with an unearned run in the top of the first. With one out, Curve starter Jeff Locke walked two batters, then got the next batter to ground to short, for what should have been a double play. SS Jordy Mercer made the throw to 2B Chase d'Arnaud for the force out at second, but d'Arnaud's relay to first base was off-target. The batter was safe, and the runner who had been on second base came around to score.

The Curve got the run back again in the bottom of the 2nd. 1B Matt Hague led off with a double, moved to third base by tagging up on C Hector Gimenez's fly out, and scored on Andrew Lambo's RBI ground out. The Curve managed only a double by 3B Josh Harrison in the 3rd, then scored again in the 4th. Hague and Gimenez opened the 4th with back-to-back walks. Lambo rocketed a line drive down to the right field corner, bringing in Hague to take the lead. RF Miles Durham grounded to short, but a quick play by the Senators going to the plate, had Gimenez out at home. Lambo moved up to third base on the play, and he scored on CF Anthony Norman's sacrifice fly. Curve up, 3-1.

The Senators came right back in the top of the 5th to tie the score again. Jeff Locke had kept the Senators from scoring over three innings, despite having runners on base in both the 2nd (walk and single) and 3rd (double and walk). Another double led off the 5th, then Locke got the next two batters out. The next batter lifted a fly deep into the left-center field alley, which sailed beyond Norman's leap and to the wall. Lambo couldn't get to it either, and the runner scored. The Senators made it runners on the corners when a short fly ball skipped off d'Arnaud's glove and bounced away. That was all for Jeff Locke, who had pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 2 runs so far, one earned and one not, on 4 hits and 4 walks, with 5 innings. Derek Hankins relieved Locke, but he threw a wild pitch, which allowed the runner from third to score, also charged to Locke. Hankins ended the inning with a strikeout, but the score was tied again, 3-3.

Pribanic Shines As Marauders Take Game One

Bradenton Marauders 5, Charlotte Stone Crabs 0 .... (box)

The Marauders broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 7th with a big 4-run inning to take the win in their first playoff game. Starter Aaron Pribanic earned the win with 7 scoreless innings of work.

Pribanic scattered 6 hits and one walk over those 7 innings. The first batter of the game singled, but a pickoff at first helped Pribanic get out of the inning. He worked around a single and a walk in the 2nd inning, and around another single in the 3rd. Pribanic retired the Stone Crabs in order in the 4th, but got into a jam in the 5th when he gave up three singles to load the bases with one out. A timely double play, started by 2B Shelby Ford, who stepped on second base himself, then fired on to 1B Calvin Anderson, got Pribanic and the Marauders out of that jam without a run scoring. Pribanic went on to retire the side in order in the 6th and 7th innings.

Charlotte starter Matthew Moore was also having a great night. He struck out 9 Bradenton batters over the first 6 innings, while allowing only one hit. He also walked 6 batters, though, and the walks were what ultimately got him into trouble. The Marauders threatened in the bottom of the 1st, when both Ford and RF Robbie Grossman walked. A wild pitch allowed Ford to move to third base. CF Starling Marte grounded to first base, but the Charlotte first baseman threw home, and Ford was out on the basepath. A strikeout ended that inning. 3B Adam Davis walked in the 2nd inning, and Grossman singled and LF Quincy Latimore walked in the 3rd, but none of them could come around to score. The Marauders went down in order in the three middle innings, including the side striking out in the 5th.

Matthew Moore began the bottom of the 7th by walking Anderson, and Anderson was replaced by pinch-runner Adenson Chourio. A wild pitch moved Chourio to second base. Moore struck out Davis, his 10th batter of the game, then intentionally walked DH Jordan Newton. That was the end of Moore's night, and he was relieved by Marquis Fleming, and Fleming did not have a good night. He began by giving up a grounder through the right side of the infield for a single to SS Greg Picart. Chourio raced around from second base to score the first run of the game. Shelby Ford followed with a double into the left-center field gap, bringing in both Newton and Picart from first base. Robbie Grossman grounded out to first, and Ford advanced to third base. Starling Marte drove a liner into left field for a double, and Ford also scored, to give the Marauders a 4-0 lead.

Fleming came back out to pitch the bottom of the 8th. C Eric Fryer began the inning with a double down the right field line. Both Erik Huber, who had come into the game in place of Calvin Anderson, and Adam Davis flied out, but Jordan Newton skipped a bad hop off the glove of the Charlotte shortstop and into short left field. Newton was credited with a hit, and Fryer came around to score one more run while the Stone Crabs were chasing down the ball.

Kyle McPherson came on in relief of Pribanic, to begin the 8th inning. By then, the Stone Crabs were a bit stunned. They went down in order, including 2 strikeouts in the 8th. McPherson got some help from Shelby Ford, who made a perfectly-timed leaping catch of a line drive to begin the 9th inning. The Stone Crabs did get a two-out hit, on a ball that fell into short left field, but McPherson got a pop out to short right field, easily played by Robbie Grossman, to end the game.

NOTES:

The Marauders will play Game 2 tomorrow in Charlotte. The Tampa Yankees beat the Dunedin Blue Jays 3-0 in the other Florida State League round one game.

The Altoona Curve begin their playoffs on Wednesday, facing the Harrisburg Senators in Altoona.

The Pirates also took a scoreless tie into the bottom of the 7th inning, when they busted the game open with a big inning. None of the 8 new call-ups got into the game, though.

Marauders Clinch Playoff Spot

On Friday night, all of the Pirates' minor league affiliates lost. On Saturday night, all but State College won....

Bradenton Marauders 4, Charlotte Stone Crabs 2 ... (box)

The Marauders assured themselves at least a spot in the playoffs with this win tonight. Nate Adcock won his 11th game of the season with 2 runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st, with a 2-out walk, a wild pitch, and two singles. He surrendered another run on a walk and a double to lead off the 3rd inning. He scattered 4 more hits, but left two stranded and erased two with double plays. In the top of the 6th, Adcock got two outs and gave up a single, then that runner stole both second and third base. He was relieved by Kyle McPherson, who finished that inning with a strikeout, then gave up just one hit over the next 2 innings, including 3 more strikeouts. Noah Krol earned his league-leading 34th save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning, working around a missed catch error.

Bradenton picked up one run in the 2nd inning, when C Eric Fryer singled, then moved to second base on a groundout. 3B Adam Davis' RBI single brought in Fryer. The Marauders were on the receiving end of several walks over the next few innings -- one in the 3rd to SS Shelby Ford, one in the 4th to Fryer, three in the 5th to DH Jordan Newton, 2B James Skelton, and RF Robbie Grossman to load the bases -- but all were left on base. They did score again in the 6th, when LF Quincy Latimore led off with a single. He was forced out at second on Fryer's grounder, leaving Fryer at first. Davis singled again, advancing Fryer to third bse, then Newton doubled in both Fryer and Davis, to take a 3-2 lead. They added an insurance run in the 4th. Grossman singled with one out, then scored on CF Starling Marte's double. The Marauders threatened again in the 8th, as Davis was hit by a pitch and Newton walked, then Skelton bunted them both into scoring position. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning, but it turned out to not matter, and the Marauders season is going to continue beyond the weekend.
