2011 Prospect Watching: Cain, Black, And More

Continuing to look at some of the pitchers in the Pirates' minor league organization:

Colton Cain  --  L/L,  6' 3", 225 lb
Cain was the Pirates' 8th round draft pick in 2009.  He began his pro career in 2010, after having had back surgery in the previous winter.  Cain began with 4 starts for the GCL Pirates, where he earned an 0-1 record and a 3.77 ERA.  In 14.1 innings, he allowed 6 runs on 12 hits and 5 walks, but struck out 15 batters.  He was promoted to State College in July, and appeared in 11 games (9 starts) there.  Two of those starts were very tough, as Cain gave up 6 runs in 2 innings on August 2nd, and 6 runs in 3 innings on August 31st.  The other 9 appearances were much better.  His best was 4 shutout innings on August 20th, when he gave up no hits and just one walk, while striking out 3 batters.  In those other 9 appearances, Cain allowed 7 runs over 29 innings (2.17 ERA), with 9 walks and 31 strikeouts.  Cain, who just turned 20 years old, should be ready to begin 2011 at West Virginia.  He'll continue to work on fastball command, but also on his changeup.

Victor Black  --  R/R,  6' 3",  185 lb
Black was chosen by the Pirates as a compensation pick between the first and second rounds of the 2009 draft.  He signed quickly and got down to business at State College.  In 13 appearances for the Spikes (7 starts), Black earned a 1-2 record and a 3.45 ERA.  He allowed 12 earned runs and 26 hits in 31.1 innings.  His walk rate was a bit high (15, 4.3 walks / 9 innings), but he also struck out 33 batters (15.4 K / 9 innings).  A shoulder injury and subsequent biceps problem plagued Black in the 2010 season, and he was able to make just 2 appearances for West Virginia in May.  Neither start was what Black would have hoped:  he gave up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings in one, and 2 runs on a hit and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning in the other.  The 22-year-old Black is healthy and ready to go in spring training for 2011.  He will likely be back to West Virginia, and the Pirates have indicated that they plan to have him pitch in relief, in hopes of limiting the stress on his arm.

Irwin: Another 7 No-Hit Innings;

Thursday's action for the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates:

West Virginia Power 3, Rome Braves 0 ... (box)

On July 24th, Power starter Phillip Irwin pitched 7 hitless and scoreless innings. Tonight, he again threw 7 scoreless innings, though this time he scattered 3 hits. Last time, he walked two batters, and tonight he did not walk any. Both times, Irwin struck out 8 opponents. Irwin's toughest inning tonight was the 4th, when he gave up a double and a single, and hit a batter. Luckily, the first runner was doubled off second base in a line-out double play. The other two runners pulled off a double steal, but a strikeout ended the inning with them both still in scoring position. Irwin retired the next 9 batters in order to finish his evening and earn his 6th win. Zach Foster earned his 6th save with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing only a walk.

The Power were held to just 5 hits, but they also took advantage of three Rome errors in one inning. In the 2nd, 1B Aaron Baker began the inning by reaching base on a fielding error. He moved to second base on a passed ball, but was out at third when RF Andy Vasquez reached on a fielder's choice. Vasquez stole second base, and scored on LF Rogelios Noris' RBI single. Noris advanced to third base when the Rome pitcher made a throwing error on a pick-off attempt, then scored on C Jairo Marquez's double, which was also complicated by a fielding error. Marquez added another run in the 5th, with a solo home run, his second of the season. Vasquez singled in the 4th inning, but was thrown out trying to steal second base. SS Benji Gonzalez doubled to lead off the 8th inning, but was left stranded.

Watson Shines For Curve; Shut Out For Spikes’ Pitchers

Sunday in the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates... as usual for a Sunday, the GCL Pirates have a scheduled day off.

The Bradenton Marauders and the Fort Myer Miracle got just an inning and a half of baseball in before they had to stop. C Eric Fryer was the only Bradenton batter to reach base, with a double in the top of the 2nd. Marauders' starter Nate Adcock had retired the side in order in the bottom of the 1st. The suspended game will be resumed on Monday evening as part of a double header, weather permitting.

Altoona Curve 9, Binghamton Mets 5 (box)

Two big innings boosted the Curve over the Mets, as starter Tony Watson pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits, while striking out 8 Mets. Watson retired the first 9 batters he faced, then gave up a single and a walk in the 3rd. He set down the next 6 batters, then gave up a lone double in the 5th. Watson faced his biggest threat in the 6th,when he gave up a single and a double, putting two runners in scoring position. But Watson got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out to finish the inning.

C Hector Gimenez led the Curve bats with 3 hits and 3 RBI. He opened the scoring with a solo home run (his 16th of the season) in the 2nd inning. He singled again in the 4th inning but was left on base, then reached on a fielding error in the 5th inning rally, and doubled in the 7th inning rally.

The 5th inning began with a solo home run by CF Anthony Norman. Watson worked a walk, then singles by 2B Chase d'Arnaud and 3B Josh Harrison loaded the bases. A sharp line-out to third by LF Jim Negrych forced the base runners to freeze in place, but a grounder force out by 1B Matt Hague brought in Watson, with Harrison out at second base. SS Jordy Mercer's single plated d'Arnaud, and a fielding error on Gimenez's ball to center field brought in both Hague and Mercer. The Curve had a 6-0 lead.

They added 3 more runs in the 7th. With one out, Hague singled, and Mercer reached on an error. Gimenez's double brought in both of them, then after a single by RF Miles Durham, Gimenez scored on a sacrifice fly by Norman.

The Curve were leading 9-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, when Derek Hankins relieved Watson. Hankins gave up 2 runs on a double, two singles, and two wild pitches. He retired the side in the 8th, but gave up a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th. Hankins still earned his 6th save of the game, because he'd pitched 3 innings. Watson's win was his 5th of the season for the Curve.

Spikes Throw One-Hitter; Wilson K’s 11

Saturday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates... The West Virginia Power and Lexington Legends were rained out tonight. They will go for two tomorrow.

State College 1, Aberdeen IronBirds 0 (box)

Pitchers Tyler Waldron, Ryan Beckman, and Brooks Pounders combined to one-hit the IronBirds tonight. Waldron made the start with 5 nearly-perfect innings. The first IronBirds batter of the game was the only one to reach base against Waldron, and he got on when C Matthew Skirving dropped strike three, then made a throwing error when he fired the ball down to first base. Waldron immediately erased that base runner in a double play, then retired all the rest of the batters he faced, including one more strikeout.

Beckman took the 6th inning, and he also retired the side in order. Pounders pitched the final three innings. He gave up back to back walks with one out in the 7th, but left both runners stranded. Pounders also retired the side in order in the 8th. The no-hitter was lost in the 9th, when the first batter of the inning doubled into right field. Pounders retired the next three batters in order, leaving the runner on second base. Waldron earned his 3rd win of the season, and Pounders earned his first save.

The Spikes batters collected 6 hits and 4 walks, but fell victim to double plays and outfield assists, so they scored only one run. In the 2nd inning, 1B Matt Curry walked, but was erased in a double play, and LF Pat Irvine singled, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Curry walked again in the 4th, but was caught stealing. SS Gift Ngoepe singled in the 9th, but was thrown out trying for two bases. The lone Spikes' run came in the 6th inning. With one out, CF Mel Rojas worked a walk, then DH Gerlis Rodriguez drove a triple into center field, scoring Rojas. Curry walked for the third time in the game in the 9th, and RF Cole White singled, but both were left on base. White was the only Spikes' batter to have two hits. 2B Kelson Brown also singled.

Farrell Returns To Marauders

Monday's action in the Pirates' lower minor leagues... The Altoona Curve had a scheduled day off.

Palm Beach Cardinals 6, Bradenton Marauders 5 (box)

The Marauders wanted to celebrate the return of 3B Jeremy Farrell with a big win, but a 3-run 7th inning by the Cardinals spoiled their plans. Farrell finished his rehab stint with the GCL Pirates and returned to the Marauders' line-up for the first time since he injured his knee on a foul ball in mid-June. Farrell got right back at it, doubling in a run in the 5th, and scoring in the Marauders' 4th inning rally.

Bradenton was the first to have the lead in the game, when they scored a run in the 2nd. LF Quincy Latimore was hit by a pitch, moved to second base on Farrell's groundout, and scored on C Eric Fryer's RBI single. The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run, then followed the homer with back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 lead.

The Marauders responded with 2 runs in the top of the 4th. Latimore again got the rally started, this time with a walk. Farrell grounded to short, but was safe when the Cardinals' second baseman missed the catch on the flip from his shortstop. Instead of what might have been a double play, the Marauders had runners on first and second bases with no outs. A fly out let Latimore tag up and move to third base. Fryer knocked another RBI single, scoring Latimore, and DH Jordan Newton RBI single brought in Farrell.

RF Robbie Grossman teamed up with Farrell to make it 4-2 in the 5th, when Grossman singled, and scored on Farrell's double. The Marauders picked up another run in the 6th, when 2B Adam Davis singled, then advanced to third base on a throwing error. He scored on another RBI single by Newton. Palm Beach got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 6th, on two walks and a single.

Nate Baker made the start for the Marauders, going 5 innings and allowing the 2 runs in the 3rd, on a total of 6 hits, no walks, and 3 RBI. Yerfi Taveras, in his debut with the Marauders, gave up the run on two walks and a single in the 6th, but also struck out a batter and induced an inning-ending double play.

Tyler Cox took over for Taveras to begin the 7th, and he was charged with both the Blown Save and the loss. He gave up a walk and a single, then a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. A fielding error by SS Shelby Ford allowed 2 runs to score (one earned, one not) and a throwing error by Farrell allowed the third run to come in (also unearned). Duke Welker retired the side in order in the 8th, and the Marauders went down in order in both the 8th and 9th.

Owens Dominates In 9th Win; Spikes Are One-Hit

A few roster moves: The Pirates have designated pitcher Steven Jackson for assignment, so that a roster space on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters will be available. That will make room for reliefer Chris Resop, who the Pirates picked up off waivers from the Braves today.

1B/OF Steve Pearce's surgery on his knee went fine, and he is expected to be out of commission for at least 4 months. He has been moved to the 60-day disabled list, which frees up another spot on the 40-man roster. That will be taken by reliever Chan Ho Park, who the Pirates claimed off waivers from the Yankees today. The Pirates will still need to open a spot on the 25-man roster, but they will have a couple more days to do that, since Park won't be joining the team until Friday.

And, today's action in the Pirates' minor league organization..... The Indianapolis Indians had a scheduled day off today; the West Virginia Power's game against the Delmarva Shorebirds was rained out, so they'll try again tomorrow.

Altoona Curve 5, Akron Aeros 1 (box)

Starter Rudy Owens pitched another stellar start, going 6 innings and allowing only a solo home run to the second batter he faced in the top of the 1st. After that homer, Owens retired the next 17 batters he faced, including 4 strikeouts. Tom Boleska relieved Owens and earned his second save with the Curve. He pitched 3 scoreless innings and allowed only a triple and a walk, with 2 strikeouts. The triple was hit by Jason Kipnis, the first batter Boleska faced. After a short fly out, Kipnis tried to tag up and score on another short fly out to new Curve LF Andrew Lambo. Lambo's throw to C Kris Watts was on target and on time, and Kipnis was thrown out at the plate.

The Curve posted 13 hits and gave Owens and Boleska 5 runs worth of support. 2B Chase d'Arnaud had 3 of the hits, all singles, and four Curve batters, Lambo, Watts, 1B Matt Hague, and RF Miles Durham each had 2 hits. The first Altoona run scored in the 2nd inning. Durham singled, CF Anthony Norman walked, and a fielding error allowed Durham to score. Lambo walked to lead off the 2nd inning rally. A single by Hague and a double by Watts followed, with Watts picking up the RBI. A sacrifice fly by Norman brought in Hague with the second run of the inning.

Singles by d'Arnaud and 3B Josh Harrison led off the 4th inning, and a double steal moved both into scoring position. Hague's RBI single plated d'Arnaud. Watts walked to load the bases, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the inning. The Curve scored their final run of the game in the 7th inning without a hit. SS Yung Chi Chen and DH Jose De Los Santos worked back-to-back walks, and both advanced a base on d'Arnaud's sacrifice bunt. Harrison's sacrifice fly brought in Chen with the Curve's 5th run of the game.

Irwin: 7 No-Hit Innings; Marauders Drop Two

A few roster notes: RHP Teddy Fallon and LHP Justin Ennis were both promoted from State College to West Virginia. Fallon was the Pirates' 43rd pick in the 2009 draft, and Ennis was the 33rd round pick in this year's draft. RHP Tom Boleska has been promoted from Bradenton to Altoona.

Altoona's Bryan Morris has skipped a start, which the Pirates are calling just a "breather". He has struggled in his last few starts, but has also stacked up the innings so far this season (103) and the Pirates want him to stay below 140 innings this season.

West Virginia Power 9, Hagerstown Suns 1 (box)

Phillip Irwin pitched 7 no-hit innings for the Power tonight, before he had to be relieved due to his increasing pitch count. Irwin struck out 8 batters in his 7 innings, and he allowed 2 walks. He got off to a strong start when he struck out the side in the 1st inning, then struck out 2 more in the 2nd. The first walk came in the 3rd inning, but that runner was immediately erased when the next batter lined right to 1B Aaron Baker, who stepped on first base for a double play. The next 7 batters went down in order, until the 6th, when that same batter, C Sandy Leon, walked again. This time Leon was forced out at second on a grounder, and another ground out ended the inning. Irwin wrapped up his amazing evening with two more strikeouts in the 7th inning.

Ryan Kelly relieved Irwin and pitched the final two innings. He allowed one hit, but it was a solo home run. He also walked a batter in the 9th, and struck out 2 batters.

The rest of the team was busy giving Irwin and Kelly plenty of run support. They piled up 16 hits, with everyone in the lineup reaching base at least one time, and all but SS Benji Gonzalez picking up at least one hit (Gonzalez had a walk). 3B Elevys Gonzalez, Aaron Baker, and LF Rogelios Noris each had 3 hits. Baker led off the 2nd inning with a solo home run. CF David Rubinstein followed the homer with a double, and Noris added a single to put runners on the corners. C Jairo Marquez lined a single into center field, scoring Rubinstein to give the Power an early 2-0 lead.

They boosted that lead in the 3rd inning, as they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 7 runs. Six of the first seven batters reached base safely: 2B Jarek Cunningham and RF Jose Hernandez began with back-to-back singles, and Baker's double scored Cunningham (#1 run). Rubinstein's sacrifice fly brought in Hernandez (#2). Noris and DH Kyle Morgan goth singled, and Baker scored (#3). Marquez doubled in Noris and Morgan (#4, 5), and sent the Hagerstown pitcher to the showers. Benji Gonzalez flied out, but Elevys Gonzalez singled, plating Marquez (#6). A fielding error on that play moved Elevys G to second base, and a wild pitch put him on third. Cunningham's second single in the inning brought in Elevys G (#7), before a line out ended the inning.

The Power put at least one baserunner on in all but one of the remaining innings, but none of them were able to come around to score.

Two Homers For Trinidad; Three Hits For Lyles and Grossman

Monday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates. The West Virginia Power have a a scheduled day off.

GCL Pirates 11, GCL Braves 3 (box)

The Pirates got in on the recent hit-o-rama fun the minor league teams have been having. This afternoon, the Pirates collected 20 hits on their way to 11 runs. 2B Kevin Mort went 5-for-5, all singles. SS Jorge Bishop had 4 hits, including a double, and 2 RBI. 1B Michaelangel Trinidad had 4 hits, two of which were home runs, and he knocked in 7 of the Pirates' 11 runs.

The fun started with 5 runs in the 2nd inning. Trinidad's first homer was for 2 runs after Mort's first single, and it was followed by a walk to CF Chih-Wei Hsu and three doubles, by 3B Eric Avila, Bishop, and LF Exicardo Cayonez, for 3 more runs. Trinidad blasted another 2-run homer in the 3rd inning, following another one of Mort's singles. Bishop led off the 4th with a single, and he scored on two more singles, by RF Gregory Polanco and Mort.

Polanco, Mort, and Trinidad hit three consecutive singles in the 6th to add another run. The Pirates' final two runs came in the 7th, on singles by Cayonez, C Elias Diaz, and Mort, with a 2-RBI double by Trinidad.

Decker Is Pitcher of the Week; Solano Goes 3-For-3

Limited action on Tuesday, just two daytime games... everyone's watching the All-Star Game tonight.

Vermont Lake Monsters 3, State College Spikes 1 (box)

LF Adalberto Santos and C Matt Skirving each had two hits, but the Spikes managed only one run this afternoon as they fell to the Lake Monsters. While they put at least one runner on base in all but two innings, the 7th was the only one in which they pushed a run across. With one out in the 7th, Skirving doubled into left field, and scored on 2B Gift Ngoepe's single up the middle. Ngoepe tried to go to second on the throw, but was tagged out. The Spikes had two runners on in the 1st inning, on back-to-back singles by Santos and 1B Matt Curry, and again in the 2nd, when Skirving singled and CF Kyle Saukko reached base on an error. Both times, a ground out ended the inning.

Starter Tyler Waldron pitched 5 innings in his 5th start for the Spikes, but he suffered the loss. He gave up a run in the top of the 1st inning, on a triple and a sacrifice fly. He worked his way out of a bases loaded jam (double, single, and walk) with a double play in the 5th inning. Trent Stevenson gave up 2 runs in the 6th, on two walks and a 2-RBI double, then pitched two more scoreless innings. Justin Ennis pitched the final inning, retiring the side in order including one strikeout.

Spikes' RHP Kevin Decker was named the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week for July 5-11. Decker pitched in two games in relief, for a total of 10.1 scoreless innings. He allowed a total of 5 hits and 2 walks in those two appearances, while striking out 9 batters. Overall, Decker has a 2-0 record, with a 2.42 ERA in 22.1 innings, and a total of 14 strikeouts.

GCL Pirates 4, GCL Blue Jays 2 (box)

2B Luis Solano went 3-for-3 this afternoon for the Pirates, with a single, a double, and a triple. After the Blue Jays scored 2 runs in the top of the 3rd, Solano's lead-off triple got the Pirates' bats going. He scored on DH Brian Friday's single, to cut the lead in half. The tied the score with a run in the 5th. SS Kevin Mort walked and Solano singled, then two wild pitches brought Mort in to score. LF Exicardo Cayonez also tripled, with one out in the 6th. He scored on 3B Eric Avila's sacrifice fly, giving the Pirates the lead. Solano's double came with two outs in the 7th, and was followed by pinch-hitter Michaelangel Trinidad's double, bringing in Solano for the Pirates' fourth run.

Vincent Payne started for the Pirates, and he was responsible for both of the Blue Jays' runs. He gave up a single and a walk in the top of the 3rd. Yeyber Sanchez relieved Payne, but gave up an RBI single, hit a batter, then threw a wild pitch that scored the second run. Sanchez threw 3 scoreless innings after that, allowing only one walk. He was credited with the win, his 3rd of the season. James Archibald added two scoreless innings, working around a single in each and a hit batter in the 8th. Joan Montero pitched the 9th, and loaded the bases with 3 walks, but got the inning-ending double play to earn his first save.

Brian Friday continued his rehab work by going 1-for-2, with a walk, and he was also hit by a pitch.

Morris Loses In Pre-Futures Start; Power Win In 10

Thursdays' action in the Pirates lower minor league organization:

Binghamton Mets 4, Altoona Curve 3 (box)

It only took two innings to get all the scoring done in this game, as Bryan Morris suffered his 4th loss with the Curve in what will be his last start before the All-Star break and his participation in the Futures Game. Morris didn't get past the 2nd inning, as he gave up all 4 Mets' runs on 6 hits. Morris got the first batter he faced to ground out, but then immediately got into trouble with a single and a ground-rule double, putting two runners in scoring position. A ground out allowed the runner from third base to score. A hit batter put runners on the corners, and two singles followed, with a second run scoring. Morris struck out the last batter of the 1st inning and the first batter of the 2nd inning. Then he gave up a solo home run, and the Mets had a 4-0 lead. A walk, a single, and a wild pitch followed the home run, but Morris was able to leave them on base as the inning ended. I suspect he had run into problems with his pitch count as well, because Derek Hankins came out to pitch the 3rd inning.

The Curve batters came back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd. 2B Jordy Mercer led off with a line drive double, and he scored when 1B Miles Durham and LF Anthony Norman hit back-to-back singles. Bryan Morris sacrifice bunted Durham and Norman into scoring position, and both of them scored on SS Chase d'Arnaud's RBI single. The Curve were behind by just one run, 4-3.

But the Curve couldn't erase that narrow margin. They put runners on base in all but one of the remaining innings, but none of them could come around to score. Nine base runners were left stranded. Two runners were left on base in the 3rd, when 3B Josh Harrison singled and RF Brandon Jones walked. Mercer doubled again in the 6th, and Norman walked, again leaving two runners on. In the top of the 9th, the Curve's final effort, CF Gorkys Hernandez singled with two outs, but a fly out ended the game.

Derek Hankins pitched 6 scoreless innings after Morris hit the showers. He retired the first 6 batters he faced in order, including striking out the side in the 4th. He hit a batter in the 5th, but immediately erased him with a double play. Another double play got Hankins out of a walk-and-single jam in the 7th. Anthony Claggett pitched the final inning. He gave up a single, but that runner was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Spikes’ Walk-Off Win; Welker Makes A+ Debut

Bradenton catcher Eric Fryer, who was hit in the face by a pitch on Thursday night, has broken facial bones around his eye. That will require surgery to fix -- get the bones properly aligned and stabilized. He's going to be out of action for at least several weeks and possibly for the rest of the season. This is the same type of injury that Paul Maholm had years ago, though his injury occurred when he was hit in the face by a line drive while on the mound.

Friday night's action:

State College Spikes 5, Williamsport Crosscutters 4 (box)

Late inning rallies gave the Spikes the walk-off win over Williamsport. The Spikes got on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning when C Matt Skirving singled and SS Gift Ngoepe blasted his first home run of the season, a 2-run homer. Williamsport tied it up in the top of the 5th. The first run, off starter Tyler Waldron, came on a double and a single. A throwing error and a sacrifice fly brought in an unearned run to tie the score.

Waldron pitched 5 innings and allowed the two runs (one earned) on 6 hits, no walks, with 3 strikeouts. He was relieved by Trent Stevenson, who pitched the next 3 innings. He gave up a run in the 6th, on a single, a stolen base with a throwing error, and a double, to give the Crosscutters the go-ahead run. The Spikes caught up and tied the score again in the bottom of the inning. Singles by Ngoepe and LF Adalberto Santos and a walk to 3B Chase Lyles loaded the bases. 1B Gerlis Rodriguez drove in Ngoepe with a sacrifice fly.

Williamsport took the lead yet again in the top of the 7th with an unearned run. A throwing error by Stevenson put the lead-off runner on base, and he scored on a triple. Rodriguez tied it up again in the bottom of the 8th with a solo home run.

Justin Ennis took the mound for the Spikes for the 9th, and he mantained the tie with a scoreless inning, allowing only a walk while striking out two batters. That gave the Spikes the chance in the bottom of the inning. The first two Spikes' batters struck out. CFKyle Saukko kept the inning going with a line drive into left field for a single. A passed ball put Saukko on second base. Ngoepe worked a walk, and a wild pitch put both runners into scoring position. 2B Walker Gourley grounded towards first base, and when he was safe on a fielding error, Saukko scored to win the game.

Jakubauskas Starts In Bradenton, Welker’s Save #5

Sunday action in the Pirates' minor league organization.... the GCL Pirates had the day off, and all of the rest of the affiliates won their games.

Bradenton Marauders 7, Fort Myers Miracle 6 (box)

IMG_2353Chris Jakubauskas (photo) made the start for the Marauders, going into the 5th inning and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, with 3 strikeouts. Jakubauskas worked his way out of trouble in each of the first three innings. He gave up back-to-back hits to begin the game, but got out of the 1st inning with a line out and a double play. Two more runners got on in the 2nd, on a single and a fielding error, but Jakubauskas worked around them to keep the Miracle from scoring. Two more singles and another error in the 3rd again had Jakubauskas in a jam, but a runner caught stealing and a fielder's choice out got him out of it again. Finally, in the 4th, Jakubauskas could not escape -- a double and a single drove in Fort Myers' first run. Jakubauskas began the 5th with an out, then two walks, and that was the end of his afternoon. Tom Boleska relieved him, but threw a wild pitch, then gave up a single and a sacrifice fly to bring in those two runners, both runs charged to Jakubauskas.

Nate Adcock pitched the next 3 innings for the Marauders. Adcock surrendered another 2 runs, on a walk, a double, an RBI single, and an RBI ground out in the 6th inning. Adcock kept the Miracle from scoring in the 7th and the 8th, but the Marauders entered the bottom of the 8th behind by a score of 5-0.

The Marauders had gone down in order in the first three innings of the game. They had one runner on base in each of the next two innings -- a single by 2B Jose De Los Santos in the 4th, a single by 3B Adam Davis in the 5th. Two batters reached base in the 6th, when De Los Santos got to first on an error and C Eric Fryer walked. None of them could come around to score.

Then, in the bottom of the 8th, it was the Marauders who found the miracle. With one out, De Los Santos doiubled, RF Robbie Grossman singled, and Fryer also doubled, and the score was 5-2. After a pitching change, LF Quincy Latimore walked, and DH Calvin Anderson singled, to load the bases. CF Austin McClune doubled, driving in both Grossman and Latimore, and a passed ball allowed Anderson to score, tying the game at 5-5.

Noah Krol took the mound in relief of Adcock to begin the 9th inning. He was greeted by a solo home run, which gave Fort Myers a 6-5 lead. Krol gave up a triple also, but left that runner stranded.

SS Adenson Chourio led off the bottom of the 9th with a single to second base. De Los Santos sacrifice bunted him to second base, and Grossman walked. Fryer tied the game again with a single into right field, as Chourio raced around from second base. Then Calvin Anderson won the game with a walk-off single, scoring Grossman for a 7-6 win.
