Duke Sparkles Again

Not sure where this has come from. Magic? Joe Kerrigan? Whatever it is, Zach Duke has won back-to-back starts for the first time since June of last year. After that start 6/9/08 vs. Arizona, Duke’s record was 4-4. He would go 1-10 the rest of the way. Duke walked two and allowed four hits. The Astros didn’t advance a runner to third until two were out in the seventh. He struck out five. The effort was...

Game 3: Duke has strong game

To say the start by Zach Duke tonight wasn’t encouraging would be a lie. I’m not going to throw cold water on this win by going over Duke’s inconsistent history, including a 2008 season where he allowed just six runs in 18.2 innings in his first three games, only to finish the season with a 4.82 ERA. Spring Training Battles: Starting Rotation

Last year the downfall of the Pirates was the starting rotation, which led the Pirates to the worst ERA in the NL, and the 28th ranked ERA in the majors. The starting pitchers racked up a 33-67 record, with a 5.36 ERA in their 162 starts. Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny were the two biggest disappointments. I’d say Matt Morris was a big disappointment, but I don’t think anyone was expecting much from him, despite the $10 M...
