The Pirates have officially announced the signing of Octavio Dotel, as he passed his physical today. It is a one-year deal, with a team option for 2011. That option is a nice little addition to the contract. Anthony Claggett was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Dotel. Claggett is 25, and has not posted decent numbers since 2008 in Double-A. Projections have him with a FIP close to 5.00 this season. His removal makes the most sense with the current roster.
Financial terms have not yet been released, but the contract was expected to be somewhere in the range of $3 million range. Dejan reports that Dotel will be the Pirates’ closer in 2010.
