Pirates Release Nine Minor Leaguers

Published:

According to Baseball America, the Pittsburgh Pirates have released nine minor league players.  Those players are:

RHP Sheng-Cin Hong

RHP Melkin Laureano

RHP Yomar Pacheco

RHP Dinesh Patel

1B Chih-Wei Hsu

1B Kyle Morgan

3B Andury Acevedo

OF Erik Huber

OF Kyle Saukko

Hong and Hsu were signed on July 2nd in 2009 out of Taiwan.  They were joined by Ping-Hung Chi, who was the standout prospect at the time, and who is the only player of the trio who remains in the system.  The release of Dinesh Patel, one of the two Indian reality show winners, leaves Rinku Singh alone in the system, although Singh had advanced a level beyond where Patel was in 2010.

No one if the group was a real loss, although Yomar Pacheco was a bit of a disappointment this year.  After putting up a 1.97 ERA in 45.2 innings in the VSL last year, Pacheco moved to the US, where he had a 4.85 ERA in 29.2 innings in the GCL, with a 7.0 K/9 and a 2.1 BB/9.
