Minor League Schedule: 6/13/11

Altoona has the day off today before starting a three game series at home versus New Britain. The VSL team was off yesterday. After going 4-2 yesterday the Pirates minor league system now has a combined record over .500 with Bradenton the only team under that mark.

Lincoln starts tonight in Indianapolis

AAA: Indianapolis (33-32) VS Gwinnett (33-30) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Brad Lincoln (5-5 4.34)

Game notes: Justin Wilson pitched 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 8 hits, one walk and he struck out five picking up his 8th win of the year. He now leads the International League in wins. Andy Marte went 3-3 with 2 RBI’s and Matt Hague collected 2 hits raising his average to .297.

AA: Altoona (31-31) VS New Britain (33-28) 7:00pm 6/14
Probable starter: Bryan Morris (1-2 3.69)

Game notes: Altoona won the completion of Saturday’s suspended game by a 13-4 score. Aaron Pribanic got in just 2 IP before it was called, and he allowed one run. Starling Marte finished the game 3-5 with 3 runs scored. Jeremy Farrell went 2-5 with three RBI’s and Jordy Mercer drove in 2 runs. In game two Jeff Locke gave up one run in 5 innings on 6 hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Starling Marte went 2-3 and Jordy Mercer drove him in with a double for the only run Altoona scored in their 2-1 loss.

High-A: Bradenton (27-36) @ Ft Myers (31-32) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Nathan Baker (3-3 4.26)

Game notes: Phillip Irwin went 5.2 IP allowing just 1 earned run on 7 hits and one walk. He got 8 groundball outs and struck out two. Jarek Cunningham went 4-5 with a double, HR and 2 RBI’s. He has 34 extra base hits on the year. Robbie Grossman was 1-4 with 2 walks, he has 46 base on balls this year. Ramon Cabrera went 2-4, double, walk and 2 RBI’s. He’s now hitting .336.

Low-A: West Virginia (31-30) @ Greensboro (28-33) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (5-2 3.44)

Game notes: Zack Von Rosenberg pitched 5 scoreless innings for his 2nd win of the season. He allowed just 3 hits, walked none and struck out three. Trent Stevenson followed him with one run in 4 innings for the save. He allowed just 3 hits, walked none and struck out three. Andrew Maggi went 3-5 with 2 runs scored. Justin Howard went 3-4 with his 4th home run and Daniel Grovatt went 2-4 with a walk, double and 3 RBI’s.

VSL: VSL Pirates (13-9) VS VSL Phillies (10-14) 11:00am

Games notes: The VSL Pirates had off yesterday. They are currently tied for 1st place with the Mariners team that has a 14-10 record.

DSL: DSL Pirates (8-3) VS DSL Rays (5-6) 10:30am

Game notes: Ramon Rodriguez, an 18 year old 6″4 righty was added to the active roster and made his pro debut pitching 3.1 IP allowing 4 earned runs. He pitched 3 perfect innings to start the game and struck out five batters. Diego Goris went 4-5 with a double, triple and 2 RBI’s. He is now batting .351.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
