For an in depth review of yesterday’s games please check out our minor league wrap-up which can be found here. Bradenton returns to play after a three day layoff for the FSL all-star break. Records in the FSL reset in the second half for playoff purposes. Altoona has off today, they return Tuesday night for a three game series in New Hampshire. West Virginia was rained out yesterday and is now on their all-star break. Their next game is Thursday night. The VSL team had off yesterday, they currently sit a 1/2 game behind the league leading Mariners team.

Stetson Allie makes his professional debut tonight starting for State College at home, and Tim will be there covering his performance for the site. The 20 year old righty was the Pirates 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft. He signed for $2.25 million, and reported to State College last year along with Jameson Taillon although neither pitched for the team, instead they participated in the Fall Instructional League in Bradenton following the minor league season.

Allie makes his pro debut today

Allie was ranked 4th overall in the 2010 Pirates Prospects guide due to his high ceiling as a pitcher. He has been clocked at 100mph and he has a plus slider that he throws in the high 80’s. He will be the 2nd of three top ten prospect arms signed in 2010 by the Pirates to make his debut this season. Down in the Gulf Coast League, the Pirates affiliate will begin their season today and although the date of his first game has yet to be announced, 16 year old phenom Luis Heredia will make his debut soon as well. The GCL teams don’t name starting pitchers ahead of time but it’s likely Heredia’s first game will be announced in advance due to his prospect status. Heredia was signed for $2.6 million last August out of Mexico during the July 2nd signing period.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
