For an in depth review of yesterday’s games please check out our minor league wrap-up which can be found here. Both the GCL and the VSL Pirates teams have off today. They each resume their schedule on Monday versus the Phillies affiliates in their respective leagues.  West Virginia has not announced their starter for today as of yet. We will update the schedule when the information is available.

Cumpton makes his Bradenton debut today

Brandon Cumpton will make his debut with Bradenton today. The SAL All-Star pitcher went 7-4 4.30 in 12 starts with West Virginia but he pitched much better than the numbers would indicate. He pitched so poorly his first three games that the team took him out of the rotation and used him in the bullpen once before giving him another start. Since that point he went 7-1 with a 1.76 ERA and he allowed just 37 hits in 56.1 innings. He also struck out 42 batters and was getting a high amount of groundouts posting a 2.18 GO/AO average.

Phillip Irwin gets his 2nd AA start today. He impressed in his first one last Sunday when he went 6 scoreless innings giving up just two hits. Overall on the season he is 6-0 with a 1.82 ERA in 11 starts.

Justin Wilson goes for Indianapolis today. He pitched in relief his last game after Rudy Owens couldn’t make it out of the 3rd inning. Wilson was impressive in his brief stint going 2.2 scorless innings with 5 strikeouts. He last started on June 18th and gave up 5 earned runs in just 2 innings of work.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
