The passing of Jose Pagan has been widely reported, though there have been few details.
John Mehno reported that Pagan died from Alzheimer’s Disease. I recently attended the 1971 Pirates reunion at Robert Morris University last month. The very first flyer I saw on the event six months ago had Pagan’s name absent from the list of attendees. So, I figured he must not have been doing well.
As was noted in the reports of his death, Pagan delivered what turned out to be the game winning RBI in Game 7 of the 1971 World Series. Something else of note – more on the lighter side of baseball history – is that Pagan is tied for the record for the most errors in an inning by a third baseman with three. It happened in the fourth inning against the Mets on 8/18/1966.
