Minor League Schedule: 7/14/11

The VSL Pirates play a doubleheader today, the second game is a makeup game of last week’s rainout versus the Tigers. Please take note of the early start time for State College. No starter has been named yet for Indianapolis for tonight. When they announce the starter we will update the schedule.

Von Rosenberg left his last start after just two outs

AAA: Indianapolis (47-45) @ Columbus (58-33) 7:05pm
Probable starter: (TBD)

Indy is currently in 3rd place, 11.5 games behind first place Columbus, who they play for the next four days.

AA: Altoona (37-52) @ Erie (43-47) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Michael Colla (4-5 3.47)

Colla will get the Curve’s first start following the all-star break. He had made 14 starts and five relief appearances. In his last start on 7/7 he gave up four runs in five innings. On the road he has a 2-2 2.57 record in 35 innings with 30 strikeouts. In his last start vs today’s opponent, Erie, he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings on June 9th.

High-A: Bradenton (41-49 overall 11-9 2nd half) @ Dunedin (49-40 overall 10-9 2nd half) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Brett Lorin (4-5 2.87)

Brett will make his 13th start of the season tonight. As a starter he has a 3-4 3.43 record. He has struck out a team high 74 batters while allowing just 14 walks in 75.2 innings. Brett on the road has a 1-2 3.19 record in seven appearances, five as a starter. In his last start versus Dunedin on May 9th he allowed 2 earned runs in 4.2 innings. In his last 10 appearances he has a 2.54 ERA.

Low-A: West Virginia (41-47 overall 6-14 2nd half) VS Hickory (53-35 overall 13-7 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Zack Von Rosenberg (3-6 7.39)

Zack will make his first start since July 1st when he got just two outs while allowing seven runs. He last two appearances have been out of the pen and he allowed 5 runs in 5.2 IP. At home this year Zack is 1-3 9.00 in seven starts. He has walked just 14 batters all year and has struck out 67, just one behind team leader Colton Cain.

Short Season A: State College (7-19) @ Staten Island (20-4) 11:00am
Probable starter: Zack Dodson (NR)

Zack will make his first rehab start with State College tonight. He made three starts with the GCL Pirates and had a 0-1 4.15 record over 8.2 innings pitched. Before getting hurt he made seven starts with West Virginia and had a 2-3 3.12 record.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (13-8) VS GCL Blue Jays (6-14) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are in 1st place, tied with the Phillies. If the rotation remains the same, Luis Heredia will make his 5th start of his career today. He is 0-1 4.00 with just 3 hits allowed in 9 innings pitched.

VSL: VSL Pirates (29-19) VS VSL Tigers (16-31) 8:30am DH

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 2 game lead over the 2nd place Rays.

DSL: DSL Pirates (24-13) VS DSL Mets2 (18-22) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are in 1st place, 1 1/2 games ahead of the DSL Red Sox.

* Rudy Owens is making the start for Indy. He was 6-6 5.27 coming into the game

** Ross Ohlendorf made the start for Bradenton. It is his first rehab appearance

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
