Minor League Schedule: 7/28/11

West Virginia had off yesterday and they resume their schedule tonight with a four game series at home against Lakewood. The GCL Pirates game was suspended with the score 2-2 in the 8th inning.  *** Garrett Olson has been named the starter for tonight’s Indianapolis game***

Allie looks to rebound from his worst pro outing

AAA: Indianapolis (54-52) @ Charlotte (52-54) 7:15pm
Probable starter: Garrett Olson (3-0 2.55)

Indianapolis is in 3rd place in their division, 11.5 games behind the first place Columbus Clippers. Indy ranks 6th in the 14 team International League in runs scored and 9th in team ERA.

AA: Altoona (44-58) @ Portland (43-60) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Jeff Locke (6-8 4.44)

Locke will make his 20th start of the season tonight. He pitched a season high 8 innings his last start Saturday night giving up 2 runs on just 3 hits and he picked up the win. He leads the team with 41 walks, 98 strikeouts and his 107.1 innings pitched trails only Aaron Pribanic by just 4.1 IP for the team lead. In his last 10 games he has a 3.60 ERA over 55 innings.

High-A: Bradenton (49-55 overall 19-15 2nd half) @ Clearwater (54-48 overall 16-17 2nd half) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Brandon Cumpton (1-0 5.12)

Brandon will get his 6th start since being promoted from West Virginia. On the season he has made 17 starts and 2 relief appearances. He has an overall record of 8-4 4.56 in 98.2 innings with 68 strikeouts and 24 walks allowed. Cumpton allowed three runs over 5 innings in his last start on Saturday.

Low-A: West Virginia (47-53 overall 12-20 2nd half) VS Lakewood (51-49 overall 18-14 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (6-6 4.75)

Tyler will get his 17th start and 19th overall appearance. On Friday night he went 6 innings allowing two runs. He last faced Lakewood on June 18th and got the win going 7 innings while giving up 2 runs. Waldron has a 5-1 3.96 record in 10 home games this year. He has allowed the 2nd most hits, home runs and walks among West Virginia pitchers. He is also 2nd in innings trailing Colton Cain by four.

Short Season A: State College (12-27) @ Tri-City (15-23) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Stetson Allie (0-1 5.95)

Stetson will get his 7th pro start tonight, he also pitched one game in relief. The 2010 2nd round draft pick got roughed up in his last outing taking his first pro loss while allowing a career high 4 earned runs in a career low 1.2 innings pitched. Allie has allowed 19 hits in 19.2 innings on the year while striking out 21 and walking a team high 16 batters.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (20-12) VS GCL Tigers (13-19) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are currently in 2nd place, just 1 1/2 games back in the standings.

VSL: VSL Pirates (36-26) VS VSL Mariners (32-30) 11:00am

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 3 game lead over the 2nd place Rays. There are just 10 games left in the season.

DSL: DSL Pirates (30-18) VS DSL Dodgers (26-23) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are tied for 2nd place with the Red Sox,one game behind the DSL Royals.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
