Minor League Schedule: 8/26/11

Indianapolis has not named a starter as of yet for their game. The GCL Pirates dropped a half game back to the Cardinals in the wild card standings with just two games to go in their season, both against the first place Yankees team.  West Virginia lost last night in a game that went 19 innings and saw utility fielder Kevin Mort pitch from the 14th inning on.

Dodson has a 1.57 ERA since returning to WV

AAA: Indianapolis (69-65) @ Columbus (82-52) 7:05pm
Probable starter: TBD ()

Indianapolis is now tied for 5th place in the wildcard standings, 6 games back with just 10 games left in the year. They do not play a team ahead of them in the wild card standings the rest of the way.

AA: Altoona (60-71) @ Binghamton (59-72) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Michael Colla (5-9 3.65)

Colla will make his 22nd start of the year tonight. He reached the 100 strikeout mark for the first time in his career in his last start. Prior to this year his career high was 72 set last year.  He has also pitched a career high 123.1 innings besting last year’s mark of 81.2 IP. He has held batters to a .225 BAA. He took the loss in his last start giving up 3 runs over 6 innings on Sunday

High-A: Bradenton (66-61 overall 36-21 2nd half) @ St Lucie (68-60 overall 30-28 2nd half) 4:00pm DH
Probable starter: Brandon Cumpton (2-3 4.01)

Brandon will make his 11th start with Bradenton tonight, he had also made 12 starts with West Virginia before his late June promotion. Combined between the two teams he has a 9-7 4.16 record with 88 strikeouts and 27 walks in 125.1 innings pitched. His last start was also against St Lucie and he allowed just one unearned run over 5 innings getting a no-decision. Bradenton has a 3 game lead in their division with just 11 games left on the schedule.

Low-A: West Virginia (61-67 overall 25-34 2nd half) VS Lexington (54-74 overall 19-39 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Zack Dodson (5-4 2.50)

Zack has made 11 starts for WV and 18 total starts on the year including his 3 in the GCL and 4 with State College. Overall he has a 5-6 3.11 record with 84 innings pitched, 85 hits allowed, 20 walks and 59 strikeouts. Since returning to WV he has a 3-1 1.57 record in 4 starts.

Short Season A: State College (25-40) VS Williamsport (37-29) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Michael Jefferson (2-2 4.54)

Jefferson will make his 6th start of the year, he has also pitched 7 times in relief. As a starter he has a 1-2 3.86 record with 19 strikeouts in 18.2 IP. In his last start on Sunday he gave up 2 runs over 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and he took the loss.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (32-26) VS GCL Yankees (37-21) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are currently in 2nd place, 5 games back in the standings.

VSL: VSL Pirates (40-32)

The VSL Pirates have finished their season. They won the VSL pennant for a sixth straight year.

DSL: DSL Pirates (41-28)

The DSL Pirates finished tied for 2nd in their division, 5.5 games back.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
