The Mesa Solar Sox lost 8-3 today to Surprise. In what is becoming a regular theme, Robbie Grossman had a big day, going 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. It was Grossman’s eighth multi-hit game in his last ten games, and took his line to a .406 average and a 1.161 OPS in 69 at-bats on the season. Jarek Cunningha also got a start, but went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts, and a sacrifice fly RBI.
Nathan Baker took the mound for Mesa in the fifth inning. Baker gave up two runs on three hits in an inning of work, with no walks and one strikeout. The left hander was saddled with the loss. Michael Colla came on after Baker, throwing 1.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits, one walk, and striking out two.
Mesa plays Surprise tomorrow at 3:35 PM EST.
Tim started Pirates Prospects in 2009 from his home in Virginia, which was 40 minutes from where Pedro Alvarez made his pro debut in Lynchburg. That year, the Lynchburg Hillcats won the Carolina League championship, and Pirates Prospects was born from Tim's reporting along the way. The site has grown over the years to include many more writers, and Tim has gone on to become a credentialed MLB reporter, producing Pirates Prospects each year, and will publish his 11th Prospect Guide this offseason. He has also served as the Pittsburgh Pirates correspondent for Baseball America since 2019. Behind the scenes, Tim is an avid music lover, and most of the money he gets paid to run this site goes to vinyl records.
