— Last Monday when A.J. Burnett arrived to camp and took Daniel McCutchen’s No. 34, he said he wasn’t sure what he would give him yet, but planned on teasing and playing with him about it for a little bit. Yesterday, McCutchen said that Burnett wrote a check in exchange for the jersey to College American 529, which is a college fund set up for his unborn daughter.

— Curtosy of the Pirates, here is a video interview with lefty reliever Daniel Moskos.

–Today’s Quote of the Day from the Pirates bulletin board:

“One of the beautiful things about baseball is that everyone once ina  while you come into a situation where you want to, and where you have to, reach down and prove something.” ~ Nolan Ryan

— Position players early work today included Jeff Clement, Nick Evans, Garrett Jones, Michael McKnery, Tony Sanchez –who all worked on defense. Gorkys Hernandez, Starling Marte and Jose Tabata worked on base running.

–Right-hander Logan Kensing left live batting practice early after tightness in his right abdomen.

–Tomorrow right-hander Charlie Morton will throw his first live BP session. He will be the only live BP thrown. James McDonald, Brad Lincoln, Jo-Jo Reyes, Chris Leroux, Ryota Igarashi, Daniel Cabrera, and Juan Cruz will throw sides. Chris Resop is scheduled for a touch and feel session.

— Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle said after workouts today that he has the pitching breakdown ready for the regular spring training games.

“We want to make sure that our players are the first ones informed how the breakdown is going to come, and what we’re going to do with them.”

Hurdle said initially it will be around the two inning mark for the starters, and then they will go to the bullpen guys from there.

“We’re looking forward to the games, but we still have work to do,” Hurdle said. “The one thing we need to keep in place is that it’s just one day at a time. The one thing we don’t want them doing is starting to process something four or five days from now. We have work to do here that needs to be task specific out here. They’re kind of figuring some things out on their own.”

— Hurdle said that he’s had some conversation about who the Pirates Opening Day starter may be. “We’ll name him way before Opening Day.”
