Minor League Schedule: 4/13/12

Jameson Taillon gets his second start of the season tonight. He was ranked second overall in the Pirates Prospects 2012 Prospect Guide. In his first start, he struck out six batters in 3.2 innings. Brad Lincoln and Nate Baker each enter their second start with a 1.80 ERA. A full recap of yesterday’s games can be found here.

Triple-A: Indianapolis (3-4) VS Toledo (4-3) 7:15pm

Brad Lincoln will get his second start of the season. He will be facing Toledo for the second time. In his first start on 4/8 he pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits, no walks and he struck out six. Last year for Indy, Lincoln went 7-8 4.19 in 19 starts. With the Pirates he went 2-3 4.72 in 47.2 innings. During 2012 Spring Training, Brad pitched four games for the Pirates, allowing ten runs in eight innings.

Probable starter: Nate Baker (1-0 1.80)

Nate Baker will be making his second start of the season tonight. In his first game on 4/6 against Erie, he went five innings, allowing two runs(one earned) on two hits, two walks and he struck out five. Last season, Baker made 25 starts and four relief appearances for Bradenton. He went 10-8 3.34 in 148.1 innings, striking out 105 and allowing just six homers all year. Nate pitched ten games in the 2011 Arizona Fall League, allowing 15 runs in 15.1 innings with 16 strikeouts.

Jameson Taillon will make his second start of the season tonight. The second ranked prospect in the Pirates system, went 3.2 innings his first outing on 4/7 against St Lucie, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out six batters. The second overall draft pick in the 2010 draft spent his first season in pro ball last year playing for West Virginia, where he went 2-3 3.98 in 23 starts. In 92.2 innings, he struck out 97 batters.

Low-A: West Virginia (2-6) VS Greenville (4-4) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Zac Fuesser (0-0 9.00)

Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 5 Greenville 1

West Virginia won tonight after losing their last five games. Today’s starter, Zac Fuesser, made his first start of the season on 4/8 against Hagerstown. He went three innings, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out two. Last season, Fuesser pitched for West Virginia all year, where he went 3-6 3.74 in 108.1 innings. Zac made 11 starts, 21 relief appearances and he struck out 95 batters.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
