Jeff Karstens will start tonight in Philadelphia.

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-hander Jeff Karstens from the disabled list and optioned reliever Bryan Morris to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Karstens will make his first start for Pittsburgh tonight since April 17 when he exited after just one inning. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day with right shoulder inflammation. He had his rehab pushed back due a groin injury as well.

Morris was recalled on Sunday for an extra arm in the bullpen, which had several relievers unavailable. The 25-year-old didn’t make an appearance in the short stay. Morris posted a 2.28 ERA with five saves and 44 strikeouts in 23 relief appearances for Triple-A Indy this season.

Infielder Drew Sutton, who the Pirates claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay yesterday, will join the club in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Sutton was added to the 40-man roster on Sunday after they transferred Charlie Morton to the 60-day DL (Tommy John surgery), but will still need to make a move to the active roster.

  1. so dumb to just call morris up for one day…at least give him an appearance if you are going to call someone up

  2. The equipment manager slipped up and didn’t pack the invisible cloak for Drew Sutton. Can’t have him just sitting on the bench like a for-real 25th man.
