PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Pirates demoted outfielder Jose Tabata to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, and recalled Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Indy.
Tabata is hitting just .230/.295/.341 on the season. Last week, Manager Clint Hurdle said sending the outfielder to Triple-A was an option, due to his lack of hustle and production in the lineup and on the field. Tabata is batting .267 over his last 10 games.
Hernandez made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh in May and went 2-for-10 (.200) over nine games.

I wouldn’t have cared if they called up Mario Mendoza to replace him. Heck, even my wooden-legged great Uncle Larry would have been fine with me. It’s about accountability, Pirates management…Remember?

I was really hoping Starling Marte would come up. What does he have to do to earn a promotion?
IMO, he needs to improve greatly his lefty/righty splits as well as his home/away splits. The former especially needs work.
I think maybe about 2 more weeks of solid production. I’m in the camp of wanting to see him be more consistent, but if he’s well over .300 for a month and a half, I think it’s time.
I was really impressed at how smooth Gorkys was in the outfield the last time he was up. He looked a lot smoother than Cutch. I will say it was a SSS.
It wasn’t. He’s the best defensive outfielder in the system.
I think this shows that Drew Sutton’s play has earned him the starting nod in the outfield and that Gorky’s is going to play the pine primarily – because if this was for a starting spot it would have been Marte coming up… and still may be in near future.
I have been one of the few not calling for Marte to be promoted until he is ready or at least as ready as he will ever be. But if I had to choose between Gorkys and Marte based on their current numbers and how well they are playing the past month or so, no question it is Marte. Perhaps this shows a lack of understanding on my part (which is quite possible) but I think Marte should have been called up as opposed to Gorkys.
In my opinion, Marte will still be called up sometime this month. They need to get him more reps in RF before he comes up. Once Barajas is completely healthy (probably after the allstar break), I see Fryer being sent down and Marte being promoted.
I’m wondering if the All-Star break is the reason Marte is being held back. He’d have to sit a few days next week so why not let him play in AAA and call him up immediately after the break.
Hey, If you’re gonna get .230 production from a corner outfielder, we may as well have the defense that Hernandez brings to the table.
