The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed 16th round pick Max Moroff, Pirates Prospects has learned. Last night I reported that the Pirates were close to Moroff’s amount, but that reports were he was leaning toward going to UCF. No word yet on the bonus amount, although I would imagine it is a deal over the $100,000 limit for picks after the 10th round.
UPDATE: Moroff receives $300,000, which is $200,000 over slot.
Tim started Pirates Prospects in 2009 from his home in Virginia, which was 40 minutes from where Pedro Alvarez made his pro debut in Lynchburg. That year, the Lynchburg Hillcats won the Carolina League championship, and Pirates Prospects was born from Tim's reporting along the way. The site has grown over the years to include many more writers, and Tim has gone on to become a credentialed MLB reporter, producing Pirates Prospects each year, and will publish his 11th Prospect Guide this offseason. He has also served as the Pittsburgh Pirates correspondent for Baseball America since 2019. Behind the scenes, Tim is an avid music lover, and most of the money he gets paid to run this site goes to vinyl records.
Hopefully Buehler isn’t out of the question, but probably isn’t looking particularly good either.
I’d love to get him. Esp if we don’t get Appel. He may be fallback if we don’t?
Combined with all the other machinations today, this tells me that the Pirates are offering Appel just slot ($2.9M) or have already moved on from him.
And I LOVE it!!!!!!! Google Matt Harrington Mr Appel! It ain’t OUR fault your advisor made you slip to 8th!!!
