Minor League Schedule: 8/6/12

Indianapolis is in first place in their division, with a ten game lead and 28 games left on their schedule. Bradenton has off today. Both DSL teams, as well as the GCL Pirates, were off yesterday. A full recap of yesterday’s games can be found here.

Irwin will try tonight for his eighth straight strong outing

Triple-A: Indianapolis (71-45) vs Charlotte (65-51) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Chris Leroux (1-0 2.76)

Chris Leroux will make his third start of the year for Indy and fourth overall start. He has also pitched 14 times in relief. He has pitched a total of 35.2 innings, giving up 29 hits, three homers, nine walks and 28 strikeouts, with a 2.22 GO/AO ratio and a .227 BAA. In his first start for Indy on 7/26, he threw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk. In his next start on 7/31, he allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.

Double-A: Altoona (54-59) vs Bowie (58-55) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Phil Irwin (3-7 2.99)

Phil Irwin will make his 16th start of the year for Altoona. He has also pitched once in relief for the Curve and made one rehab start for Bradenton. As a starter for Altoona, he has pitched 91.1 innings, giving up 89 hits, seven homers, 13 walks and he has 74 strikeouts, with a 1.80 GO/AO ratio. In his last seven starts combined, he has allowed just five earned runs over 47 innings, throwing three complete games. Over that stretch, he has 42 strikeouts, allowing four walks and 33 hits.

Mike Jefferson will make his ninth start of the year tonight. He has also pitched 16 times in relief. As a starter, he has pitched a total of 33 innings, posting a 3-3 5.18 record. In his last start on 8/1, Mike allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings. Left-handed batters are hitting .322 against him, while he is holding righties to a .237 average.

Clario Perez will make his third start of the season tonight. He has pitched once in relief for State College and 16 times in relief for West Virginia. In his second start on 7/27, he gave up one run on three hits in four innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
