Prior to signing Jason Grilli, there were rumors that the Pittsburgh Pirates were shopping Joel Hanrahan. After the signing of Grilli, a Hanrahan deal only made more sense. Jayson Stark reports that the team continues to talk about dealing Hanrahan after the signing.
After signing Jason Grilli, #Pirates continue to talk about dealing Joel Hanrahan. Among teams with potential match: #Tigers & #Dodgers

I’ve seen the Dodgers and Tigers mentioned many times as potential matches. That’s a key term here, as Stark isn’t saying the Dodgers and Tigers have talked with the Pirates. So far we’ve heard a rumor that the Pirates and Dodgers have discussed Hanrahan, but nothing about the Tigers outside of connecting the dots.
UPDATE 4:04 PM: John Perrotto has two updates on Twitter.
Am told #Pirates would want a second player in addition to Chris Capuano if they were to trade Joel Hanrahan to #Dodgers. Don't know who.

Also have been told that #Tigers would trade Brennen Boesch, but not Rick Porcello, to #Pirates for Joel Hanrahan.

I wrote last night about Hanrahan’s value. It’s basically the same as Capuano’s, so I don’t see how the Pirates could get another player. Then again, they did get James McDonald from the Dodgers for Octavio Dotel, who the Dodgers traded for next to nothing about a month later.
Boesch wouldn’t make sense for the Pirates, since they’ve got Starling Marte, Travis Snider, Jose Tabata, and Alex Presley. He might be better than Tabata or Presley, but he’d just be another unknown in a crowded group, and wouldn’t represent any upgrade to the team.
Tim started Pirates Prospects in 2009 from his home in Virginia, which was 40 minutes from where Pedro Alvarez made his pro debut in Lynchburg. That year, the Lynchburg Hillcats won the Carolina League championship, and Pirates Prospects was born from Tim's reporting along the way. The site has grown over the years to include many more writers, and Tim has gone on to become a credentialed MLB reporter, producing Pirates Prospects each year, and will publish his 11th Prospect Guide this offseason. He has also served as the Pittsburgh Pirates correspondent for Baseball America since 2019. Behind the scenes, Tim is an avid music lover, and most of the money he gets paid to run this site goes to vinyl records.
I’d do the Porcello deal in a second
I’m not a huge fan of Gordon, high risk high reward type guy
I would do a Porcello for Hammer in a heartbeat. Thinking outside the box, how about G. Jones for J. Masterson deal?
I would be surprised to see Dee Gordon on the Dodgers for much longer.
Gordon for Hanny?
How about Capuano and Dee Gordon for Hanrahan??
I’d take Dee Gordon straight up in that deal. I don’t see any chance of even that deal happening. Although, if the Dodgers are desperate enough to “complete” their team in their view, you never know. I’m a big fan of multiple teams becoming interested in Hanrahan though, that will only drive the price up higher.
Yikes! You would?
The book is out on Dee Gordon – he can’t hit a plus fastball to save his life. And with no power source, he’s going to see a lot of them. Basically Wily Taveras playing SS. Other than the speed, he really as no secondary skills to stick. Even the glove is replacement level.
There are few starting SS I would not slot in ahead of Barmes, but you just named one of them.
Tigers need to sign Anibal Sanchez already then deal Porcello to us. Then everyone is happy.
