SCOUTING REPORT
The Pirates don’t have any strong options at third base in their minor league system, and will need to find an eventual replacement at third for Pedro Alvarez. The 2013 draft has two top college third basemen in Moran and Kris Bryant. Moran might be the better fit for the Pirates. Bryant has more power, but is also right-handed and might not stick at third for the long-term. Moran has the defensive skills to stick at third, and he’s also left-handed, which fits well for PNC Park. He doesn’t have the power that Bryant has, but he’s a strong hitter. Baseball America calls him the best pure hitter in the class, and Jonathan Mayo says he could add more power as he matures due to his projectable frame. He’s the nephew of B.J. Surhoff.
