Pirates Announce 2013 Minor League Managers and Coaches

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced their 2013 minor league managers and coaches today. Here is the breakdown.

The Managers

Indianapolis: Dean Treanor will return for his third season in Indianapolis.

Altoona: Carlos Garcia was promoted to Double-A after spending two seasons managing in Bradenton. He replaced P.J. Forbes, who left the organization earlier this off-season.

Bradenton: Frank Kremblas will take over as the manager in Bradenton. He spent the 2012 season as a Special Assistant to Minor League Operations, and was the manager in Indianapolis in 2009 and 2010. He replaces Garcia.

West Virginia: Michael Ryan will take over as the manager, which we heard about earlier from Chuck McGill. He replaces Rick Sofield, who was promoted to be the first base coach in Pittsburgh.

Jamestown: Dave Turgeon will return to manage the short-season A-ball team for the second straight year.

GCL: Milver Reyes was a player/coach last year, and will take over as the manager in the GCL. He replaces Tom Prince. Prince will remain in the organization but will be a full time coordinator.

DSL: Gera Alvarez returns as the manager for the DSL II team. Keoni De Renne takes over as the manager for the DSL I team. De Renne was signed last year as a player/coach.

The Coaches

Indianapolis: Tom Filer returns as the pitching coach. Mike Pagliarulo takes over as the hitting coach, replacing Jeff Branson. Branson has been hired as the assistant hitting coach in the majors.

Altoona: Ryan Long returns as the hitting coach. Stan Kyles takes over as the pitching coach, replacing Jeff Johnson. Johnson was moved to West Virginia.

Bradenton: Justin Meccage takes over as the pitching coach, replacing Mike Steele. The two switched roles. Steele will take over in Jamestown, which was Meccage’s old position. Edgar Varela, who was with West Virginia last year takes over as the hitting coach, replacing Kory DeHaan. DeHaan was moved to Jamestown.

West Virginia: Jeff Johnson returns to West Virginia, where he was the pitching coach from 2009-2011. He was with Altoona last year. Orlando Merced takes over as the hitting coach in West Virginia.

Jamestown: Kory DeHaan replaces Dave Howard as the hitting coach. Mike Steele replaces Justin Meccage as the pitching coach.

GCL: Mike Lum returns as the hitting coach. Miguel Bonilla replaces Bobby St. Pierre as the pitching coach. Bonilla was the GCL pitching coach from 2002-2011, and was with the organization last year.

DSL: Jonathan Prieto and Dan Urbina return as the hitting coach and pitching coach respectively for the DSL II team. Johe Acosta returns as the hitting coach for DSL I. Jairo Cuevas takes over as the pitching coach.

The New Guys

Michael Ryan – Ryan spent 15 seasons in the minors, parts of five seasons in the majors, and one season with the Indianapolis Indians (2007). He was signed last year as a player/coach and takes over as the manager in West Virginia.

Mike Pagliarulo – He spent 11 years in the majors, hitting for a .241/.306/.407 line in 3901 at-bats between 1984 and 1995. RumBunter looked at the connection between Pagliarulo and senior advisor to the GM, Bill Livesey. He will take over as the hitting coach in Indianapolis.

Stan Kyles – He was the bullpen coach with Milwaukee last year, and has spent time as a minor league pitching coach in Milwaukee’s system from 2001-2007. He was the bullpen coach in Milwaukee from 2009-2012. Kyles will take over as the Altoona pitching coach.

Orlando Merced – Pirates fans don’t need an introduction here.
