Minor League Schedule: 5/12/13

Two top pitching prospects are on the mound today, as all the games are early afternoon starts. Jameson Taillon will take the mound, trying to rebound from a tough start that ended early due to injury. Tyler Glasnow gets the start for West Virginia, looking to continue his dominance over SAL hitters, while also trying to improve his command. Bradenton has off today. AAA: Indianapolis (26-11) VS Toledo (10-27) 1:35pm
Probable starter: Brandon Cumpton (2-2, 2.38)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 8, Toledo 5

Brandon Cumpton will make his fifth start for Indianapolis today. He has also pitched once in relief and he has made two starts for Altoona. Cumpton has pitched a total of 39 innings this year, giving up 34 hits, one homer and 13 walks. He has 32 strikeouts, a terrific 2.57 GO/AO ratio and a .231 BAA. In his last start, he matched his season high with eight strikeouts, going seven innings with two earned runs allowed. He faced Toledo in his first AAA start, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings

AA: Altoona (15-21) VS Richmond (17-17) 1:00pm
Probable starter: Jameson Taillon (2-4, 3.26)
Yesterday’s Result: Richmond 5, Altoona 0(game one) Altoona 5, Richmond 3(game two)

Jameson Taillon will make his seventh start of the season today. He left his last start early after being him on the leg by a line drive. In 38.2 innings, he has allowed 37 hits, one homers, 13 walks and he has 39 strikeouts. At home this year, he is 1-3, 2.55 in four starts, with a .202 BAA. Taillon has faced Richmond twice this year, with vastly different results. In his first game, he threw seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits. Five days later, he gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings.

High-A: Bradenton (13-23) @ Clearwater  (18-16) 7:00pm 5/13
Probable starter: Eliecer Navarro (0-6, 3.57)
Yesterday’s Result: Charlotte 4, Bradenton 1

Bradenton has off today. They resume their schedule tomorrow night on the road for four games, before returning home for a seven day homestand. Bradenton is currently fifth in their division, 14.5 games behind first place Fort Myers. They are 5-13 on the road, 4-6 in their last ten games and they have lost two straight. Gregory Polanco leads the team in all three Triple Crown categories, .303 avg, four homers and 19 RBI’s. On the pitching side, Nick Kingham’s four wins and 47 strikeouts lead the team, and his 2.95 ERA leads all starters.

Low-A: West Virginia (17-18) @ Lexington (17-18) 1:35pm
Probable starter: Tyler Glasnow (2-0, 1.80)
Yesterday’s Result: Lexington 2, West Virginia 0(game one) West Virginia 4, Lexington 3(game two)

Tyler Glasnow will make his seventh start of the season today. He has been limited in his work due to some control problems, but he has also been nearly unhittable all season. In 25 innings, Glasnow has allowed 11 hits, no homers and 17 walks. He has 33 strikeouts and a .129 BAA. He has had more success at home this year, posting an 0.64 ERA in three starts, versus a 3.27 ERA in three road starts.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
