Minor League Schedule: Dickson Makes Pro Debut Tonight

West Virginia returns from their All-Star break tonight. Indianapolis plays an early afternoon game today. AAA: Indianapolis (49-25) @ Norfolk (38-35) 12:05pm
Probable starter: Kris Johnson (5-3, 3.07)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 8, Norfolk 1 (game one) Indianapolis 5, Norfolk 3 in 10 innings (game two)

Kris Johnson will get his 11th start of the season this afternoon. He has also made five relief appearances. As a starter, he is 5-2, 2.70 in 56.2 innings. On the year, Johnson has pitched 67.1 innings, allowing 64 hits, three homers, 25 walks and he has 49 strikeouts, with a 1.31 GO/AO ratio and a .254 BAA. In his last start, he allowed one run on nine hits and no walks over six innings. He faced Norfolk in relief twice last time these teams met, throwing a total of 4.2 scoreless innings.

AA: Altoona (32-37) vs New Hampshire (33-38) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Casey Sadler (7-4, 2.98)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 5, New Hampshire 2

Casey Sadler will make his 15th start of the season tonight. He has pitched 87.2 innings this year, the most in the organization. Sadler has allowed 77 hits, seven homers and 21 walks. He has 51 strikeouts, a 1.76 GO/AO ratio and a .241 BAA. In his last start, he threw six shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk. At home this year, Sadler is 2-4, 3.56 in seven starts. He has gone at least six innings in eight of his last nine starts. The other outing was 5.2 innings.

High-A: Bradenton (26-42) vs Charlotte (29-38) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Robby Rowland (3-4, 4.34)
Yesterday’s Result: Jupiter 3, Bradenton 2

Robby Rowland will make his 14th start of the season tonight.  He has thrown 64.1 innings, allowing 59 hits, six homers and 24 walks. Rowland has 34 strikeouts, a 1.29 GO/AO ratio and a .247 BAA. In his last start, he went five innings, allowing four runs(all unearned) on two hits and four walks. In his last nine starts combined, Rowland has picked up just 19 strikeouts. He faced Charlotte on 5/10, giving up three runs(two earned) on six hits and two walks, without recording a strikeout.

Low-A: West Virginia (37-33) vs Lakewood (26-41) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Clay Holmes (2-5, 4.95)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia is on their All-Star break.

Clay Holmes will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 60 innings, allowing 57 hits and five homers, while walking 40 and striking out 40 batters. He has a 1.91 GO/AO ratio, one of the best in the organization. In three June starts, he has a 3.00 ERA and a .218 BAA in 15 innings. Holmes faced Lakewood on 6/1, throwing five shutout innings, allowing just one hit, though he did walk five batters. He has a 6.06 ERA in eight home starts.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (2-1) vs Williamsport (1-2) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Cody Dickson (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Mahoning Valley 7, Jamestown 6

Cody Dickson will make his professional debut tonight. He was the fourth round pick in the 2013 amateur draft for the Pirates. Dickson is a 21-year-old 6’3″ lefty, who went 9-5, 4.26 in 95 innings for Sam Houston State this season. He held batters to a .185 BAA and struck out 91, but also issued 51 walks. John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
