Minor League Schedule: Kingham Goes In Altoona Tonight

Nick Kingham, the Pirates sixth-ranked prospect, gets the start for Altoona tonight. He comes into the game with an 0.53 ERA. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. Jay Jackson will make his second start of the season tonight. He has also pitched three times in relief. In nine innings, he has allowed 14 hits, no homers and eight walks. Jackson has 12 strikeouts, an 0.25 GO/AO ratio and a .341 BAA. In his only start, he gave up five runs over 2.2 innings.

Nick Kingham will make his fourth start of the season tonight. He has allowed just one earned run this year over 17 innings of work. Kingham has held batters to a .193 average this season, though he has also had some control issues. Last season, he walked 44 batters in 143.1 innings. This season, he has walked three batters in each start. Kingham went five innings in his last game, giving up two unearned runs on five hits and he had three strikeouts.

Orlando Castro will make his fourth start of the season tonight. In his first start, which came against Charlotte, he gave up three runs on four hits over five innings. In his last two starts, Castro has allowed just one run over 12 innings. In 17 total innings, he has two walks, 15 strikeouts, a 3.00 GO/AO ratio and a .230 BAA. Right-handed batters are hitting .212 off Castro.

Low-A: West Virginia (7-10) vs Kannapolis (8-9) 7:05pm  
Probable starter: Buddy Borden (0-1, 2.79)
Yesterday’s Result: Kannapolis 8, West Virginia 6

Buddy Borden will make his fourth start of the season tonight. He has pitched 9.2 innings, giving up 10 hits, five walks and he has 11 strikeouts. Borden reached his single inning pitch limit before he could get out of the first inning last Wednesday. In his previous start, he threw five shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk. Borden is holding right-handed batters to a .219 average.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
