Minor League Schedule: Doubleheaders For Altoona and Bradenton on Saturday

Busy day on the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league schedule today, with doubleheaders for the Altoona Curve and the Bradenton Marauders. Bradenton was rained out yesterday, while the Altoona game is a make-up for an earlier rainout. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. AAA: Indianapolis (18-9) @ Pawtucket (17-12) 6:05pm
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (0-0, 2.25)
Yesterday’s Result: Pawtucket 6, Indianapolis 1

Tyler Waldron will make his second start for Indianapolis tonight. He has also made seven relief appearances this year, one for Altoona and six for Bradenton. Waldron gave up one run on two hits and a walk in four innings during his only start. He also picked up five strikeouts. In 14.2 total innings, he has given up just five hits and two walks, while striking out 18 batters.

AA: Altoona (11-14) vs Akron (15-11) 4:30pm DH
Probable starter: Tyler Sample (2-0, 1.00) and Brandon Mann (1-2, 2.20)
Yesterday’s Result: Akron 5, Altoona 4

Tyler Sample will make his fourth start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. When he gets the ball over the plate, Sample has been the Pirates best minor league pitcher. Unfortunately, to go along with his 1.00 ERA, 18 strikeouts and a .127 BAA in 18 innings, he has also walked 16 batters. He has thrown a combined 11 shutout innings in his last two starts. Sample faced Akron in his only relief appearance and allowed one unearned run over three innings. Brandon Mann will get the start in game two. He has pitched seven times in relief and made one spot start when Zack Dodson got injured. In that game, Mann threw five innings, allowing just one unearned run. In 16.1 innings, he has allowed 14 hits, no homers and six walks. Mann has 20 strikeouts, an 0.67 GO/AO ratio and a .222 BAA.

High-A: Bradenton (14-13) vs St Lucie (15-12) 5:00pm DH
Probable starter: John Kuchno (3-2, 4.64) and Orlando Castro (2-1, 3.29)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton was rained out

John Kuchno will make his sixth start of the season. He has pitched a total of 21.1 innings, allowing 21 hits, ten walks and no homers. He has ten strikeouts, an impressive 2.92 GO/AO ratio and a .256 BAA. Kuchno faced St Lucie in his last start, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks. He is holding lefties to a .200 BAA. During his two home starts, Kuchno is holding batters to a .190 average and he has a 3.33 GO/AO ratio.  Castro will make his sixth start of the season tonight. In 27.1 innings, he has allowed 27 hits, two homers and four walks. He has 21 strikeouts, a 1.70 GO/AO ratio and a .267 BAA. In his last start, he gave up four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. Castro gave up a combined three runs in his previous three starts.

Low-A: West Virginia (10-18) @ Greensboro (15-12) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Shane Carle (0-2, 4.09)
Yesterday’s Result: Greensboro 8, West Virginia 7

Shane Carle will make his sixth start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 22 innings, allowing 29 hits, three homers and just two walks. He has 20 strikeouts, a 1.59 GO/AO ratio and a .315 BAA. In his last start, Carle gave up four runs on nine hits and a walk in 5.1 innings. He struck out just one batter after picking up at least six strikeouts in each of his previous three starts. In 54 at-bats against left-handed batters, Carle has 15 strikeouts, but he has also allowed 18 hits.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
