Minor League Schedule: A.J. Morris Looks to Continue Strong Season

AAA: Indianapolis (45-31) @ Norfolk (30-46) 12:05pm
Probable starter: A.J. Morris (1-2, 1.35)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 5, Norfolk 4

A.J. Morris will make his fourth start for Indianapolis today. He has pitched well in AAA, giving up just three earned runs over 20 innings. In his last start, he gave up one run on five hits and two walks in five innings. Morris made eight starts and five relief appearances for Altoona this year. Between both stops, he has pitched a total of 75 innings, allowing 58 hits, four homers and 23 walks. He has 53 walks, a 2.04 GO/AO ratio and a .215 BAA.

AA: Altoona (27-47) @ New Britain (39-32) 6:35pm
Probable starter: Zack Dodson (1-3, 4.22)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 5, Portland 4

Zack Dodson will make his 11th start of the season. He has also pitched once in relief. Dodson has pitched a total of 49 innings, allowing 62 hits, four homers and 13 walks. He has 30 strikeouts, a 1.79 GO/AO ratio and a .316 BAA. In his last start, Dodson went seven innings for the first time this year. He allowed three runs on four hits in that outing. Dodson has a 3.14 road ERA and a 5.75 ERA at home.

High-A: Bradenton (38-35, 3-1 2nd half) vs Palm Beach (40-33) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Jason Creasy (3-3, 3.91)
Yesterday’s Result: Palm Beach 6, Bradenton 3

Jason Creasy will make his 16th start of the season. He has thrown 71.1 innings, giving up 77 hits, four homers and 13 walks. He has 52 strikeouts, a 1.11 GO/AO ratio and a .276 BAA. In his last start, Creasy surrendered four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out seven batters, his season high. Creasy faced Palm Beach in his previous outing and allowed three runs over four innings.

Low-A: West Virginia (23-49, 3-1 2nd half) @ Delmarva (40-32) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Dovydas Neverauskas (3-5, 6.55)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 4, Lakewood 3

Dovydas Neverauskas will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has the highest ERA among all regular starters in the Pirates system. Neverauskas has struggled in June, making three starts in which he allowed 17 runs in 9.2 innings. He has faced Delmarva twice with drastically different results. In his last start, he allowed eight runs over 1.2 innings. In the previous game, he threw five shutout innings.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (3-7) vs Williamsport (4-6) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Frank Duncan (0-0, 0.00)
Yesterday’s Result:  Jamestown 9, Williamsport 3

Frank Duncan will make his second start for Jamestown. He went three innings in his debut, allowed one unearned run on three hits, with no walks or strikeouts. Duncan is a 22-year-old, 6’4″ right-hander that pitched for Kansas this season and he was drafted in the 13th round.

RK: Bristol (1-3) vs Burlington (1-3) 7:00pm
Probable Starter: Hector Garcia (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Burlington 12Bristol 3

Hector Garcia will make his season debut tonight. He is an 18-year-old lefty, who pitched one season in the DSL for the Pirates, making one start and 16 relief appearances. He had a 2.40 ERA in 41.1 innings, giving up 30 hits, one homer and 22 walks. Garcia had 41 strikeouts, an 0.58 GO/AO ratio and a .200 BAA. Check out the Bristol Pirates season preview.

GCL: Pirates (0-2) vs Blue Jays (0-2) 12:00pm
Probable Starter: Dario Agrazal Jr. (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Pirates were off yesterday

Dario Agrazal Jr. will make his season debut today. The 19-year-old righty pitched one season in the DSL for the Pirates. He made 12 starts and one relief appearance, throwing a total of 60 innings. Agrazal had a 2.40 ERA with 17 walks, 32 strikeouts, an 0.97 GO/AO ratio and a .249 BAA. Check out the GCL Pirates season preview.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
