Minor League Schedule: Billy Roth Makes Season Debut For Bristol on Sunday

Six teams on the schedule today with three early afternoon games. Both the GCL and DSL Pirates are off today. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. Probable starter: Casey Sadler (7-1, 2.43)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 10, Norfolk 4

Casey Sadler will make his tenth start of the season today. He has already picked up seven wins this year despite having two brief stints with the Pirates. For Indianapolis, Sadler has thrown 55.2 innings, allowing 48 hits, four homers and 12 walks. He has 39 strikeouts, a 1.66 GO/AO ratio and a .239 BAA. In his last start, he threw five shutout innings, giving up four hits and three walks, while picking up three strikeouts.

AA: Altoona (26-47) @ Portland (49-25) 1:00pm
Probable starter: Adrian Sampson (4-4, 2.15)
Yesterday’s Result: Portland 5, Altoona 1 (game one) Portland 3, Altoona 2 (game two)

Adrian Sampson will make his 15th start of the season today. He has thrown 79.2 innings, allowing 65 hits, four homers and 18 walks. He has 62 strikeouts, a 1.07 GO/AO ratio and a .223 BAA. In his last start, Sampson gave up one run over seven innings. He faced Portland in his previous start and gave up two runs over three innings in a start that was cut short due to rain. Sampson is holding right-handed batters to a .186 average this year.

High-A: Bradenton (38-34, 3-0 2nd half) vs Palm Beach (39-33) 5:00pm
Probable starter: John Kuchno (3-6, 3.82)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton 7, Jupiter 0

John Kuchno will make his 15th start of the season tonight. He has thrown 70.2 innings, allowing 66 hits, two homers and 34 walks. Kuchno has 39 strikeouts, a 2.76 GO/AO ratio and a .251 BAA. In his last start, he allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in six innings. Kuchno went seven innings in each of his three previous outings. He has a 2.28 ERA at home this year.

Low-A: West Virginia (22-49, 2-1 2nd half) @ Lakewood (28-44) 1:05pm
Probable starter: Shane Carle (1-5, 3.93)
Yesterday’s Result: Lakewood 6, West Virginia 5 in 10 innings

Shane Carle will make his 12th start of the season today. His last three appearances were made in relief and he hasn’t started since May 30th.  Carle has given up eight earned runs over his last five innings. He started against Lakewood on May 25th and allowed just one run over seven innings. Carle has given up six walks in 66.1 innings and he has a 1.98 GO/AO ratio.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (2-7) vs Williamsport (4-5) 4:05pm
Probable Starter: Austin Coley (0-1, 32.40)
Yesterday’s Result: State College 6, Jamestown 2

Austin Coley will make his second start of the season tonight. He was the eighth round draft pick of the Pirates this year. Billy Roth will make his season debut tonight. He was the 16th round draft pick of the Pirates last year. Roth is a 19-year-old, 6’3″, right-hander. In the GCL last year, he made six starts, throwing a total of 19.1 innings. Roth allowed 15 hits, one homer and nine walks. He had ten strikeouts, a 1.28 GO/AO ratio and a .231 BAA. John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
