Minor League Schedule: Casey Sadler Has Been Even Better Lately

Seven games on the schedule today with everyone except Bristol playing. Casey Sadler takes the mound for Indianapolis tonight, looking to carry his June success into the new month. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. Probable starter: Casey Sadler (8-1, 2.10)
Yesterday’s Result: Toledo 5, Indianapolis 3

Casey Sadler will make his 12th start tonight. He has also made four relief appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates. For Indianapolis, Sadler has pitched 68.2 innings, allowing 57 hits, five homers and 14 walks. He has 43 strikeouts, a 1.87 GO/AO ratio and a .232 BAA. In his last start, he threw seven shutout innings. In his previous game, Sadler gave up one run on two hits in six innings of work. He had an 0.50 ERA in 18 innings in June.

AA: Altoona (29-54) @ Bowie (46-38) 6:35pm
Probable starter: Adrian Sampson (5-5, 2.90)
Yesterday’s Result: Bowie 4, Altoona 3

Adrian Sampson will make his 17th start of the season. He had a tough month of June after pitching as well as anyone in the Pirates system during the first two months of the season. In June, Sampson had a 4.91 ERA in five starts. He posted a 1.82 ERA in April and 2.08 in six May starts. On the road this season, he has a 3.13 ERA in 46 innings. In 93 innings, he has allowed five homers and 20 walks, while picking up 71 strikeouts.

High-A: Bradenton (42-39, 7-5 2nd half) vs Ft Myers (38-42) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Chad Kuhl (8-5, 3.83)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton 5, Ft Myers 4

Chad Kuhl will make his 17th start of the season today. He has thrown a total of 89.1 innings, allowing 88 hits, six homers and 17 walks. He has 66 strikeouts, a 1.85 GO/AO ratio and a .262 BAA. In his last start, he went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. It was the first time in his career that Kuhl gave up more than two walks in a game.

Low-A: West Virginia (28-53, 7-5 2nd half) vs Hickory (52-30) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Buddy Borden (3-5, 3.71)
Yesterday’s Result: Hickory 11, West Virginia 6

Buddy Borden will get his 16th start of the season. His last outing was in relief, his only game out of the bullpen this year. Borden has pitched a total of 70.1 innings, allowing 63 hits, seven homers and 33 walks. He has 57 strikeouts, an 0.94 GO/AO ratio and a .238 BAA. In his last start, he got knocked out of the game after just one inning. He reached his single inning pitch limit and gave up three runs and four hits and a walk.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (8-10) vs Williamsport (8-9) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Alex McRae (0-0, 1.59)
Yesterday’s Result: Williamsport 6, Jamestown 3

Alex McRae will make his fourth start since being drafted in the tenth round this year. In his last start, he went five innings against Mahoning Valley, giving up two runs on five hits. In each of his first two outings, McRae threw shutout ball. In 11.1 innings, he has eight strikeouts and hasn’t allowed a walk or home run.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
