Minor League Schedule: Cody Dickson Has Been Solid During the Second Half

All eight teams on the schedule today, with four early start times. The DSL and GCL Pirates always play early games, but both Jamestown and Bradenton have morning start times today. Probable starter: Jay Jackson (5-3, 4.62)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 7, Columbus 5

Jay Jackson will make his 12th start of the season. He has also pitched 11 times in relief. As a starter, he has a 4.42 ERA in 53 innings, with 52 hits, four homers and 24 walks. Jackson has 53 strikeouts, an 0.75 GO/AO ratio and a .254 BAA. In his last two appearances, he has given up ten runs on 12 hits in 6.1 innings.

AA: Altoona (39-63) @ New Britain (49-50) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Zack Dodson (2-6, 5.65)
Yesterday’s Result: Bowie 3, Altoona 0

Zack Dodson will make his 16th start. He has also pitched once in relief. He has thrown a total of 73.1 innings, giving up 94 hits, eight homers  and 26 walks. Dodson has 45 strikeouts, a 1.60 GO/AO ratio and a .320 BAA. In his last start, he gave up seven runs on nine hits in five innings. He faced New Britain on 6/23 and gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in six innings.

High-A: Bradenton (53-44, 18-10 2nd half) @ Dunedin (60-39) 11:00am

Cody Dickson will make his 20th start of the season tonight. He has thrown a total of 93 innings, allowing 101 hits, eight homers and 40 walks. He has 72 strikeouts, a 1.04 GO/AO ratio and a .285 BAA. In his last start against Rome, Dickson allowed four runs over six innings, though just one run was earned. Since the All-Star break, he has made six starts and put up a 1.89 ERA in 33.1 innings. Dickson has pitched much better on the road, posting a 3.45 ERA versus 5.93 in seven home games.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (15-20) @ Staten Island (19-17) 11:00am
Probable Starter: Frank Duncan (1-1, 4.39)
Yesterday’s Result: Staten Island 7, Jamestown 4

Frank Duncan will make his seventh start of the season this morning. He has thrown 26.2 innings, surrendering 32 hits, one homer and four walks. He has ten strikeouts, an 0.83 GO/AO ratio and a .308 BAA. In his last start, he gave up two runs on six hits in five innings. In his last three starts combined, Duncan has given up four runs over 15 innings and hasn’t issued a single walk.

RK: Bristol (9-18) @ Johnson City (14-14) 7:00pm
Probable Starter: Hector Garcia (0-3, 3.31)
Yesterday’s Result:  Bristol 4, Johnson City 3

Hector Garcia will make his sixth start of the season tonight. The 18-year-old lefty went 3.2 innings in his last start, giving up two runs on seven hits. He had no walks and five strikeouts. This will be his fifth straight road start. Check out the Bristol season preview.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
