The Pirates New Affiliate in Morgantown Will Be Called The West Virginia Black Bears

A few weeks ago, the Morgantown franchise (which just relocated from Jamestown) held a naming contest. Today, the franchise announces that the new team will be called the West Virginia Black Bears. The team is the new Pittsburgh Pirates’ affiliate in the New York-Penn League, which is the level just below their other team in West Virginia, the Power.

As I wrote a few weeks ago when the voting first started, this should absolutely come with some Dwight Schrute promotions.

  • Meh. I hope it grows on me…liked Black Diamonds MUCH better.

  • I don’t understand. If the team in Morgantown is known as “West Virginia”, what will the team in Charleston be known as? Am I missing something here?

The teams will play in different leagues, so there shouldn’t be confusion in the scheduling. Of course, Tim won’t do it, but the confusion will come when some writer tries to refer to two prospects at different levels, but just says that each plays for “West Virginia”.

That said, I’d like to see the Charleston team change their name as I think WV Power is a lousy name. IMO, it’s bad enough to auction off naming rights for a stadium, but for the team? So, I would be pleased if the Power became the Charleston WhateverTheNewNameIses.

      • Really can’t do that, though. There is already a “Charleston” (S.C.) in the same league.

Good point, I hadn’t thought about other teams in the SAL. However, they could use a name like Kanawha Valley Whatevers. (Wasn’t the team once called the Wheelers, as in Sternwheel riverboat?)

Regardless, I don’t like having the team named after its sponsor. Then there’s the idea that team names should be plurals.

Just a=call them the Bears or Power

  • Definitely one of the better of some crummy voting options.

  • Go Bears!
